World Cup Past And Present

The first World Cup was held in 1930, and host Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final. Before the World Cup, the Olympic football tournament had briefly been the top international football tournament, but the World Cup quickly took its place.

The only team to play in every World Cup thus far is Brazil, and they hold the record for most World Cup titles with five. Next with four is Italy, who defeated France 5-3 on penalties to win the last World Cup in Germany in 2006. The all-time leading World Cup scorer is Brazilian star Ronaldo, who scored his record-breaking 15th goal in World Cup 2006.

The first World Cup featured 13 teams, and it was a 16-team tournament from 1934 until 1982, when it expanded to 24 teams. Starting with the 1998 World Cup in France, the tournament has been at its current format of 32 teams. There is one group stage involving eight groups of four, and the group winners and group runners-up advance to the knockout rounds, which all feature single-legged ties.

Qualifying takes place in each of FIFA’s six continental confederations. The host nation automatically qualifies, but starting with the 2006 World Cup, the defending champions must go through qualifying instead of automatically qualifying.

There are few sporting events that feature as much drama and excitement as World Cup qualifying and the World Cup do, and with Live Sport Network, you don’t have to worry about missing any of the live World Cup action.
