Why the Ref’s Assistant got the Kalou offside wrong – and why YOU would do the same
My name’s Fifth Column and I am an alcoholic…
…oh, sorry, wrong audience. What I meant to say is that my name is Fifth Column and I am a qualified referee. I feel the need to defend my colleague who got the Kalou decision wrong. In hindsight this was an incorrect decision. However, in the same situation I think at least 50% of linesmen (“referee’s assistants” pah)… would have given the same decision.
As a linesman you have to do an instant check in your head when a pass is made that MAY be offside: “is the recipient interfering with play / is he ‘active’”, “are there two opposition players between him and the goal line” and even “did the ball travel forwards”. A linesman has usually around a second to decide. All of the above criteria applied to Kalou and so would have been an instinctive reaction of most linesmen to flag as soon as they see a pass to a player in such a position.
However, it turns out that he was not ahead of the ball when the ball was played and therefore should not have been flagged offside. It is rare for a goal to be scored from a forward pass to a player who was in front of the last defender but behind the ball when it was initially passed. The linesman may not even have thought about the possibility until after the game because it is not a common occurrence.
In addition, it is very difficult for a linesman to ensure his view is exactly straight across the pitch i.e. when you are judging offside you need to be facing the point on the opposition touchline exactly mirroring your own position along your touchline. If you are facing just 3 or 4 degrees off a direct line, it means the angle of your line of sight is seriously effected and therefore in very close situations, a player may appear to the linesman to be in an offside position when he is in fact onside. For a diagram explaining “line of sight” you can go to following link and scroll to the diagram at the foot of the page: Offside Rule Explained.
Making the situation more difficult, if a winger is crossing the ball almost directly in front of you, it obliges you to change your line of sight significantly which makes judging offside positions even harder.
Regardless of all those factors, a recently university study has shown that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a human to get offside decisions correct. This is due to the fact that a linesman needs to judge at the exact same moment:
-The position of the player playing the ball.
-The position of the ball itself when it is played.
-The position of the recipient of the ball.
-The position of the last TWO defensive players – usually the keeper and the last defender.
The study showed that the human eye is incapable of taking in sufficient information to judge the position of 5 (moving) objects simultaneously and to any degree of certainty. This effectively means that every single offside decision is just guesswork.
So before people bang on about the lack of professionalism of referees and “easy” decisions, they really should think about the process of instant decision making a referee has to go through during a game. Without referees, there would be no football. If you want to learn for yourself, call your local parks league, tell them you want to become a ref and they’ll probably pay the £100 it costs to train to be a ref. Go to the FA website and from there you can get all the contacts and details you need.
But just remember, referees do experience the same level of stigma as an alcoholic. You just don’t get the liver damage. Unless you are an alcoholic referee, but I’m shurrrr there are none of thoshe… you’re my best mate you, did you know that?

serves em right now they know what it feels like to be cost 2 points by poor offical desicions
Maybe glasses would help
Liverpool got the benefit of two points from a poor decision the game before they played Chelsea so they are in no position to be self righteous. Both those decisions were judgement calls by the respective refs that are arguable.
Chelsea’s goal was undisputed fact.
What a short memory you have, Liverpool_Fan. We’ve been done out of a CL Final and an FA Cup final by decisions which went against us against your lot. I’d keep your head below the parapet if I were you.
great – liverpool v chelsea slanging match for no good reason. I’m going to enjoy this
I love it. I wondered how long it would take for people to start making excuses for the linesman. You’ve gotta laugh.
Ridiculous article. None of those factors apply. No-one was in front of the ball. All players were in the linesman’s eyeline at the same time. The pass was lined up for a few seconds in advance. Decisions are hard sometims. This one wasn’t.
It definitely is tough being a linesman! Sometimes I think it’s easier being the ref. Not sure if I completely agree on all offside judgments being guesswork, but I get your point. But hey in Chelski’s case – what goes around, comes around.
hey the reason the decisions went agaisnt you is because fate is telling you money isnt worthy of being champions of europe
interesting article.
the bottom line is these decisions usually even themselves out over the whole season
@ #9:
Apparently neither was your money at year, unless i am somehow mistaken.
That call was ridiculous. It was clearly a goal. If you, a blog writer, can identify all of those amazing demonstrations of what the human eye is capable of, then the Premier League too has addressed the issue within itself, and if they felt there was a convincing need to change the system, they would have.
Don’t make excuses for a blown call. That was an easy call to make for anyone whose sole job in that situation is to look for whether or not it was offside or not.
I am expecting Mourinho to get a phone call apology from the linesman, just like Rafa got one a couple weeks ago.
“hey the reason the decisions went agaisnt you is because fate is telling you money isnt worthy of being champions of europe.”
Well that’s Liverpool knackered for this season, then, isn’t it?
this makes perfect sense. referees are often in a tough position to make calls with about a second to think about them and the linesman was in one of those positions. not to mention the number of points chelsea won as a result of terrible ref decisions:
(drogba handball, drogba offside, drogba offside, drogba handball, drogba dive, robben dive, mourinho dive, etc.)
so there is no reason for mourinho to complain or lierpool fans to feel self righteous because referees often help you guys. and after all to put it in drogba’s words: “its part of the game”
finally it is refreshing to see someone actually take the ref’s side of things when the whole nation is against them
Any article the descends into a Liverpool Vs Chelsea slanging match has got to be a good thing
I would agree that at the level the linesman concerned is at, he should not make that mistake… I was merely pointing out the thought process that goes into making offside decisions – it was certainly NOT an easy call in terms of the decision making process at that split second.
A Dutch study suggested that linesmen get offside decisions right 94% of the time. The other 6% of the time they get the decision wrong and this is often when they are a yard AHEAD of play i.e. they are running marginally ahead of play and their line of sight is effected. When linesman are walking or jogging they are more likely to get it right.
As the study concludes, it is easier to make a judgement sitting in the stands than as the linesman because you have a better depth perspective and you are in a static position.
I only ref at a low level but never act as linesman because I find it much more difficult than being the referee.
Our top 2 signings are Torres:21 Million and Cisse:14 Million so how the hell is that any were near as bad as Chelsea
Good article!
This is exactly why I would oppose the use of cameras for real-time footballing decisions. How else can you enjoy a Chelsea vs Liverpool battering for no apparent reason?
This kinda makes the game more exciting (even if the decision sometimes goes against your team).
Whats the big deal? Chelsea got a fortunate penalty at Anfield. Its bad luck, thats all. As for the article, people make wrong decisions all the time, why justify it?
Good article, though i really couldn’t care less that Chelsea has a perfectly good goal ruled offside, i’m even not that bothered that they got a penalty for nothing against my team Liverpool. Facts are officals make mistakes, its the same every year and unless you want to ruin the game by having video replays then its not going to change.
As everyone says these decision tend to even out over time, i can understand the players and manager complaining about them at the time but there’s no point continuously bringing that back up, they ain’t going to suddenly change because you hold a grudge over a goal that might have or might not have been scored in a semi final over 2 years ago!
Liverpool_Fan said “hey the reason the decisions went agaisnt you is because fate is telling you money isnt worthy of being champions of europe”
So now you’re in the money, what might your fate be? Or is your new found wealth to be offset by your previous atrocities at European Cup finals?
Toodle pip.
well considering we r after the league and you guys bought the league for 2 years then if thats what happens happy days
im surprised the liverpool_fan has managed to stay online for so long! one would presume the battery on the stolen laptop he’s using would’ve run out by now! or did you steal the charger too!
i for one am quite upset chelsea’s goal was dis-allowed as i’d rather MAN UTD catch and overtake a worthy opponent such as chelsea, where’s the fun in beating a second rate bunch of sticky fingered scousers!
and the fact that these moronic liverFOOL fans still say chelsea bought the league is beyond me!
i almost hope that you tossers! sorry! scousers win the league at least that way you might all stop goin on and on and on! deydodatdontdey!! muppets
HAHA, i love to see mourinho in a strop. Also i think roman abramovich will be taking the cost of that monitor out of jose’s salary lol.And not forgetting WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE SAY WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE !!!
I was at a muslim wedding once and the best man used the same alcoholic opening line… Instant Pin-drop silence, I swear, even the babies at the back stopped crying and gave the best man daggers!
Anyway, Fifth, thanks for the article, finally something decent on here… site of the year, ha ha!
I dont get how Liverpool fans can slag off Chelski for buying the title. That particular slagging should be used by fans of teams OUTSIDE of the top 4! Seriously, £27m on Torres and your NOT trying to buy success? Dont make me laugh.
Some credit (through gritted teeth) for Chelski, others have tried to buy success and failed.
Anyway, back to Fifths article… I dont think he is justifying the reason as such, just explaining a linesman’s thought process.
I think refs and linesman should be (constructively) criticised for making silly errors and losing control of games. The Chelski goal was an abnormal circumstance.
I thought the decision to suspend the ref from the Liverpool/Chelski game was outrageous. It just further encourages players to surround and hound the ref… If the decision made was right, no action is taken against players. If it was wrong, the players get all self-righteous. Terrible pressure on refs.
Has anyone taken Terry to task for rounding on Pedersen and saying he dived? What a wanker, just let the ref get on with it.
MANYOO_FAN its obvious your a chelsea fan stop trying to hide it
and we didn’t buy torres for 27 it was 21 and that is our only ever signing above 15 million stupid so now we r buying the league?
