What would Van Persie’s arrival at Manchester City mean for Balotelli, Tevez and co?

After securing a last-gasp Premier League title success last season, Manchester City were expected to push on and splurge in the transfer market, as they look to challenge on all fronts next term. However, despite a slow summer to date, Robin van Persie’s admission that he will not extend his current deal at Arsenal has triggered Roberto Mancini’s interest. Although other sides are also circling and Arsene Wenger is by no means guaranteed to sell, what would the Dutchman’s arrival at the Etihad Stadium mean for City’s other strikers?

Sergio Aguero

The diminutive Argentine forward took to the Premier League in his debut season like a duck to water, and scored the division-winning goal in injury time on the last day. Despite reported Real Madrid interest, the South American has pledged to stay with the English champions, and Mancini has no intention of selling him. Van Persie’s most likely strike partner, Aguero is the one attacker at City assured of a place and his future.

Carlos Tevez

Controversial, petulant but brilliant, Carlos Tevez had quite the 2011-12 season. Initial transfer requests, a refusal to come off the bench and a prolonged AWOL period back in Argentina meant that the forward’s time in England looked over. However, after an apology, Mancini reinstated Tevez in his side and the ex-United attacker has stated that he is now happy at the club. Despite this, Van Persie’s arrival would surely restrict Tevez’s opportunities and break-up his partnership with countryman Aguero, which could well lead to more ill-discipline and problems for City.

Edin Dzeko

Despite at times looking lethal in front of goal in 2011-12, the Bosnian has slipped down the Etihad Stadium pecking order and looks certain to be sold. Van Persie’s arrival would mark the end of Dzeko’s City career.

Mario Balotelli

The most interesting scenario of the four, should Van Persie arrive at City real questions over Balotelli’s future will be asked. One only has to look at how the temperamental attacker acted when dropped by Cesare Prandelli at Euro 2012 to see his thoughts on not playing. Balotelli needs attention, to feel loved and to be centre-stage; Van Persie’s arrival would mean a lot of bench time for the Italian, and a pain in the neck for Mancini.

Van Persie would be an asset to any team, and certainly be a signing of intent by City. However, with a number of other big egos and outspoken characters vying for a place in the side’s attack, Mancini’s man-management skills would be stretched to breaking point.

  1. So with one injury free and successful season, you now rate Van Persea above the above mentioned players safe Aguero? Are you nuts? How old is Bollotelli compared to Van Persea? Did you take that in consideration? The only city player with an uncertain future in Dzeko. No way will any of the other three be sold for Van Persea. Remember Adebayo’s lone good season and subsequent transfer? How did that end up? I expect better articles from soccerlens.

  2. I think if RVP joins City, it will be his downfall. City got way too many strikers at this oint and players like Dzeko and Bolltelli are not seeing enough playing time. Dzeko used to be one of the best strikers before he joined city. He lost his touch now sitting behind Aguero and Bollotelli. Also Tevez in mix. Hope RVP goes to a better TEAM where he can be the same 25-30 goal scorer.

  3. At 28 Van Persie is in his prime, top goalscorer in the Premier League last term and almost single-handedly dragged Arsenal into third. Balotelli is talented certainly but his discipline is lacking, whilst Tevez’s motivations are selfish and cannot be trusted.

If Van Persie moves to City he will start for the side. Expect the egos of Tevez and Balotelli to get upset and them potentially to either go AWOL again or ask for a move.

Are you saying that Van Persie wouldn’t play ahead of Tevez or Balotelli in the big games?

Oh by the way it is Van Persie, Adebayor and Balotelli :-)

  4. It will be a great mistake to underestimate the attacking abilities of Teves and balotelli. Van persie will have to work extremely hard if he is to be in the starting line up. Remember, Nasri was arguably the best man in arsenal but when he left for man city, the story changed not because he is not a good player but because he met better players there and that became difficult for him to fit in well as the competition for shirt is too much for him.

  5. with huge respect,i honestly think Robin will be an important addition to City’s attack that’s only if he can remain injury free like he did last season. The likes of Dzeko & Tevez may be shown the exit door in course of his arrival. In my opinion,Balloteli will be preferred to Aguero because of his superlative performance during the Euros.

  6. Robin is a good player and has every right to want to win something in his prime. He will be a good addition to any top team but I don’t believe he will just walk into a mancity team and bench their already established players. I do not think he is better than Tevez or Balotelli. Arsenal centered their play around him and he was consistent but not enough for them to win anything. Mancity will not play their game centered on him and for that he can fade. Just consider euro 2012 and you will get my point. He may have to redefine himself if he join a new top team to be successful and that may not necessarily mean scoring 36 goals.
