What is happening to Real Madrid?
Real Madrid are historically the most successful club in Spain, Europe and probably the world, as well as one of the richest if not the richest club in the world. Over the years they’ve had some fantastic players and played some mouth-watering football but things have changed at the Santiago Bernabeu and as an outsider I have to wonder what exactly is going on at Real Madrid.
I watched Barcelona hammer Real 6-2 in El Classico at the weekend and despite my preference for the Catalan side it was a sad site to see how little contest there actually was in the game. Real tried to get forward in the early stages and even took the lead but while Barca looked fast, inventive and slick Real looked tired, at sometimes clueless and very sloppy. Barca had their Champions League semi-final against Chelsea to think about, Real knew they had to win to stand any chance of lifting the title at the end of the season yet they capitulated spectacularly as Barca simply destroyed them.
The Madrid faithful began to leave as soon as Barca took a 4-2 lead and by the time the score had reached 6-2 the stadium was virtually empty. For a club the size of Real Madrid to lose by that margin at home to their fierce rivals is simply unacceptable and there seems to be something inherently wrong with the way the club is run.
I had enough of the Cristiano Ronaldo saga last summer but for the purposes of this article I’m going to have to revisit it (I apologise to anyone out there who feels the same). Real pushed and pushed to sign Ronaldo but Manchester United wouldn’t give him up despite huge offers (£70million+) and pressure from the player himself. However, it has come to light that the Real coach at the time Bernd Schuster didn’t even want to sign Ronaldo.
“I understood the club would have to pay an extortionate fee to bring that kid, and they made it clear to me that if he came it would be very difficult to get anyone else. Maybe one more, but at a very low price.” Schuster told Marca in April.
“But of course, if he didn’t come we could bring someone else in, someone who we really needed.
“The thing is we didn’t need Cristiano, that was more a theme the club had going. We knew that with him alone we wouldn’t solve other problems because he can’t defend nor play on the wing.”
I’m not sure about the he can’t ‘play on the wing’ bit personally, he has looked all right there whenever I’ve watched him race down a flank but the comments show something disturbing. Schuster describes the quest for Ronaldo’s signature as a ‘theme for the club’ suggesting it is less about what is good for the team and more about the prestige of having the best player in the world at the Bernabeu. This is something that has been a part of Real’s way for a long time but it really seems to be having a detrimental effect on their success at the moment.
In fairness Real have not been a great side for some years now, perhaps since Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo left the Bernabeu. Their current playing squad is frankly fairly poor, Iker Casillas is still probably the best keeper in the world but I’m less convinced about their defence. In midfield they just didn’t have anyone who could stand up to Barca’s engine and their attack failed miserably in front of goal.
Raul has been a stalwart of the side for many years but the striker is aging now and Real need a replacement. They may have found one in Gonzalo Higuain who plays in a remarkably similar style but just because a player plays in the same style does not necessarily mean he is an adequate replacement. Though to be fair to Higuain he did show some exceptional skill to skip through three Barca players and set up Arjen Robben early on in El Classico but the Dutchman couldn’t find a way past Victor Valdes.
In Schuster’s interview he also claimed Real were not willing to back him in the transfer market and would only free up money for Ronaldo. He said: “They said they had no money. (There was money for Ronaldo) but not for the others.” If this is true this is absolutely ridiculous for a club like Real, or indeed any club, if they need players surely they need to identify a few targets in case they miss out on their first choice. Can you imagine Alex Ferguson deciding he wants a centre-half, making a move for John Terry and getting knocked back then deciding if he can’t have Terry he won’t have anyone? Nope, me neither. This is a frankly crazy when running one of the world’s top sides and if this is true it comes as little surprise that Real have failed in their hunt for silverware this season.
Historically Real have played exciting, flowing attacking football but whenever I’ve watched them this season it simply hasn’t been the case. They may occasionally display some great stuff but this Real team has been more defensively minded than any Real side I can remember. This is simply not the Real Madrid way and it must be doubly upsetting for their fans with Barcelona playing such exciting football.
If Real are to challenge for the Spanish League and Champions League next season they need to address these (and any other) issues. They need at least a few top-quality players to come in and without doubt they need a creative force who can unlock an opponent’s defence. In Lassana Diarra they might have found a suitable replacement (finally) for Claude Makelele and that was definitely something that was missing but there are obvious problems for Real to address before the start of the next campaign, I just wonder if they will.

good article. exceptionally non-biased for a self-proclaimed barca fan. well done.
May 4th, 2009 @ 20:05I would love to see Los Galacticos again. But to do that they would need boatloads of money and the greatest negoitiater ever. Who I would love to see there…
May 5th, 2009 @ 01:52Cristiano Ronaldo
Kaka
Vidic
Lahm
David Villa
The post is well written but there are certain aspects missing..
Even though the Club had won the title for the past 2 seasons with the same defence and midfield and the Board was pompous enough to think that 1 addition of Ronaldo would have won them the Champions League???(They did not consider, that the last two titles were more to do with a poorly performing Ronaldinho than Madrid)
There are two aspects of the Solution to the Madrid problem:
1) they have to accept that the Galacticos time is OVER nd the new team has to be built around a solid structure of support staff and board…
2) they need to stop disgracing the football world by claiming they are the club with the BIGGEST stature and start working on football
3) they need to BUILD a team and that too around an existing young spanish player and not an outside purchase. someone like Xavi or Iniesta for Barca)
4) Their supporters need to stop making themselves be freakingly pompous about who they are and post comments like the one Essienthebest has written.. its just boils my blood to see such disgraceful supporters who do not support the present team but the forgotten Galacticos….
(k the last one has nothing to do with their rebuilding./. just my anger)
Anyway.. great article specially from a barca supporter..
May 5th, 2009 @ 09:47I’d like to see them buy some dudes already playing in Spain. A defender like Diego Godin would fit well to replace Canna. David Silva would be great in midfield. What about Andres Guardado on the left? The kid is quality. It would be great if De la red could play next season too.
Contrary to popular thought, I don’t think Madrid are that far away. They need a coach with the right football philosophy for the club to be there. Then, give him time. They’d have to if they ever wanted someone like Wenger. Juande Ramos could do the job fine, too.
But…probably won’t happen.
May 5th, 2009 @ 09:55Few top coaches want to go to real because there is too much interference. What they need to do is to hire a top coach, assure him the will no longer be interference and then make the funds available and let the coach do with it what he believes is best. Quite frankly I do not see that happening at Real Madrid. I recall a few years back Wenger once commented on the fact that real coaches don’t last. That was at a time when they were rumoured to be interested in having him as their coach. That pretty much sums up the bulk of their problems.
May 5th, 2009 @ 10:10anirudh:
May 5th, 2009 @ 12:23ok, I don’t think the problem is the pomposity of the club or supporters, although there is a general mentality among fans and board members that is destroying the club- “bring back los galacticos!”. I think the bandwagon fans who say that would fall under the category of barca fans at this time, and most of the problem is not issues with the club, but how everyone like you acts like there is a crisis when real don’t meet your unrealistic expectations.
ok anirudh
May 5th, 2009 @ 22:42I’m not a madrid fan to begin with,(never wrote that) a chelsea one in fact…which you probably have even more of a problem with. Anyways, the reason I put that was because I remember the Galacticos when I was a kid and it helped me get into soccer. Seeing all those brilliant players on one team made me want to watch. So cool your blood and calm down, the post was just for fun.
Great article and very non-biases. I think the first thing Madrid need to do is change the mentality of fans, players, board and staff. The team as everyone has said only thinks about bringing the Galacticos back and that is why they always want the most expensive and previous year best players. They should build from the bottom. Have a better youth system and train the young players like Palanca, De La Red, Javi Garcia, etc. They need to stop trying to change EVERYTHING from one day to another. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE! They need to slow down and think things over before jumping to huge transfer offers.
May 6th, 2009 @ 00:09I think some of the player they have are not even capable/worth playing for a side like Real Madrid. (Faubert, Metzelder, etc…)
May 6th, 2009 @ 00:41The whole problem with madrid started with the sacking of del bosque(thought he was a great manager given scant respect by the madrid board)…They forgot stability is the key for winning in football.Capello sacking was worse when the ship had just steadied…Too many managers have come and gone in the madrid team…I think they are paying a very big price for not having one manager…Just feel it will take them a few years to get those winning days…and the fans and the board need to get this ronaldo theme out of their minds…Dont think he is the solution to the problems in the club…..
May 6th, 2009 @ 03:20to fix madrid get 2 excellent centrebacks and 1 leftback.
May 6th, 2009 @ 07:20Lets say carvalho, albiol and garay back from racing. The leftback can be young preferably left-footed centre back with a slight amount of pace some1 like marcano from racing.
Next get a dedicated right winger who can also play on the left, honestly c.ronaldo would be perfect but ribery would also work. After that the midfield should be m.diarra as a true DM, l.diarra as a more attacking DM/CM and sneijder as the central attacking CM. Use robben and higuain as your main strikers and thats an amazing team. To fund it get rid of drenthe, cannavaro, metzelder, VDV, guti, huntelaar, RDV.
Gago, de la red, torres, raul, pepe would be the main subs. Since many players can play in a variety of positions alot of different formations can be put out.
I think Real Madrid are not going to get Ronaldo playing like that.
May 6th, 2009 @ 10:17Heinze has been playing terribly. They need to find good defenders.I think someone like Zapata of Udinese or Heiko Westerman or Albiol would be ideal,a speedy patner to the physically dominant pepe.
May 6th, 2009 @ 13:24I like Marcelo,i just feel (an opinion that the Real Madrid guy on the offside.com has since expressed) that maybe they would be better off playing him higher up the pitch, his pace and tricks would be better of there.
Buy another winger…then play a normal 4-4-2.
KEEP SJNIEDER! The guy is an awesome player,he’s just had a bad season.Play him in the centre, and between him and Guti in the centre they should be good enough to provide the spark in midfield with Lassana DIarra protecting the back four.
I think with Robben,Marcelo and enough width will be provided, and with RVN,Raul,Higuain, and Huntelaar, they have a forward line which most coaches would love to have
Real Madrid just needs a better scouting and youth program. The ones right now are practically inexistent. That is why they keep buying other teams’ players and haven’t had any good youth products since Casillas. Build a stronger youth academy to match those under clubs like Atletico Madrid, Barca, Valencia, Sevilla, and Bilbao to name a few. Then send out better scouts to Brazil and Argentina to find more players like Marcelo, Higuain, Gago, or even a Robinho or two that we can profit off. Then raid Eastern Europe for young players like the big Premier League clubs are doing. This sounds racist, but if you focus on scouting in these two areas, you won’t need to spend the resources required to scout places like Africa and Asia. It’s so simple, but with the current Real Madrid mentality it will not happen.
May 6th, 2009 @ 14:33And hey, why not get more French and Dutch youngsters and develop their skill?
May 6th, 2009 @ 14:34The problem is politics & structure at the club. As long as this ridiculous, revolving Presidency is in place you’ll get nothing but pompous asses making silly promises in order to get voted in. This keeps the whole galacticos concept going as, invariably, Real are linked with all the big names because of this.
The presedential revolving door is only oudone by the manager revolving door which, quite frankly, is counter-productive. There is no continuity. If you don’t win the League/CL every season you’re out. Why any top manager would touch the job is beyond me.
The fall-out from this structure is that the club are more and more tarnishing their image and at times look like a laughing stock e.g. Calderon and the Ronaldo saga.
I can’t believe that genuine Real fans are happy with all of this. A once great club has been showing little class of late.
May 7th, 2009 @ 07:39we are suffering the aftereffects of having the worst administrative team ever at the helm. calderon and mijatovic along with the other idiots like portugal. perez returning would be good not only because he might have learnt his lessons but also because the team he is promising to bring onboard.
apart from the squad overhaul, we need a complete overhaul of the boardroom too. a new sporting director(monchi, hopefully) and jorge valdano as the administrator are just the starting points. hierro and zidane are tipped for returning too.
if barca win the cl, i think a cycle of la liga dominance might begin. madrid are definitely undergoing a massive rebuilding effort this summer. the new teams will be interesting to see, at the very least.
May 7th, 2009 @ 11:10The problem is that in football you can only truly rebuild a club from the bottom up, but the people at the top of Real Madrid have this mentality that is preventing progress.
May 7th, 2009 @ 16:41good article and neutral, madrid should try to get m.essien, d.santon, and fast central defenders… plus young winger and forget bout ronaldo…
May 7th, 2009 @ 17:34I fear that the brand has grown to be so profitable worldwide that winning football has become a secondary priority in Madrid. Landing players like Beckham or C. Ronaldo results in a kind of guaranteed success that has nothing to do with results on the pitch. As a Madrid fan, I do hope I’m wrong.
I do however think that Tevez or Ribery are can’t-miss.
