Thierry Henry News Archives

Thierry Henry is one of the best strikers in the world today. Has won every competition except the Champions League, and while there’s a chance that he could still win it with Arsenal, Henry, turning 30 in August 2007, is running out of time.

Has been linked with a move away from Arsenal for the last couple of summers, but most of it is just speculation and nothing else - blind throwing of mud on the wall hoping that when it sticks, people can claim that they knew it all along.

A player who has won the World Cup (1998) and Euro 2000, and it’s a shame that a player of his ability has never won the Fifa World Player of the Year award.

That and the Champions League.

Barcelona season now hinges on United performance

Football Club Barcelona is not in the best state to go into the Champions League semi final with Manchester United. If you regularly read the Spanish sports press you will know that Barça is a club in crisis. It may also seem that the press always says the same, at least when Barça are not beating the pants off everyone.

However, over the last couple of weeks the situation has reached a point where it feels as though the club is going to explode with one more bad result. Before last week’s goalless draw with Getafe president Joan Laporta appealed to a group of supporters that Barça “are not as bad as all that.” He went on to tell the fans that they should not fall into the trap of listening to journalists who pretended to be on Barça’s side but in fact had other interests.

His arguments might have been valid but the anxious aggressive tone that he used to make them did little to convince the fans, and after Barça once again missed an opportunity to close the gap on Real Madrid by failing to beat Getafe, some of the crowd protested by calling for Laporta’s resignation.

Henry would rather move to Liverpool than to Tottenham, Newcastle United or Manchester City

Heard a rumour the other day that Thierry Henry might be moving away from Barcelona after just one season. Henry’s name may not be synonymous with loyalty for most fans but why would he pack up and leave so quickly when he’s taken so much time to get settled in?

And then I heard that he would be coming back to England. Not to Arsenal, because that story has ended, but perhaps to Chelsea or some other big club. But the rumours didn’t stop there. Now we’re hearing that Henry could move to another London club, namely Tottenham, to be close to his daughter. Not far behind are the rumours linking Henry to Newcastle United and Manchester City, the former getting over-excited whenever their club strings a couple of wins in a row and the later already dreaming about next season and that big big big signing that Shinawatra has promised them.

Speculation can be fun, but this one is absurd.

Usmanov buys out Arsenal board, DD returns with JM as AW and CF jet off to Barcelona

In a stunning takeover, Alisher Usmanov has bought out Stan Kroenke AND the Arsenal board, giving him ownership of more than 80% of Arsenal and effectively making him the ruler of all things Arsenal.

Shocking as this news is, it might be least of worries for Arsenal fans - 2 of the most important people at Arsenal have indicated a move away from the Emirates at the end of the season.

But there is one silver lining to this - David Dein, the new chairman of Arsenal FC, has announced that the Gunners have already lined up a Premier League and Champions League winning manager to take over from Wenger.

All-Time Premier League Top Scorers: Alan Shearer, Andy Cole, Thierry Henry, Robbie Fowler and Les Ferdinand

Today we are going to look at the all-time top scorers in the Premier League.

The Premier League has seen many players come and go since its inception in 1992. We certainly remember some and others never cross our minds again. Club teams constantly sign up new talent but only a few will ever come close to what the Top Five have accomplished.

We all know their names, so let’s just look at their impressive numbers and great goals again.

Celtic v Barcelona - 07/08 Champions League 2nd Round Preview

A lot of people may feel that this is one of the more one-sided of the last-sixteen ties in this season’s Champions League but statistics suggest that Celtic could well cause an upset. Celtic fear no-one at Celtic Park and Barça have only beaten Celtic once in three meetings at Camp Nou, and that was in November 1964 when Barça won 3-1 in the second round first leg of the Fairs Cup. The last two visits were in 2004 and Celtic managed to draw both times.

10 Reasons Why Barcelona Should Have Signed Diego Milito and not Thierry Henry

I was going to write a type of homage to Diego Milito during the transfer window as I anticipated that a move to a bigger club was imminent for the Zaragoza striker.

Milito was heavily linked with Tottenham and Manchester City (who, strangely in my opinion, opted for Benjani) during the January sales. Since no transfer has materialized, I thought I’d have a crack (of the whip) at the Henry move to Barça, whilst demonstrating that Milito represented over the summer and continues to represent a far finer prospect for the culé ranks.

Please note: I am not suggesting that Milito is a better footballer than Henry, and it would be preposterous to attempt to do so. However, I do believe that Milito would have been a much better investment on the part of the Catalan giants.

WagSnatch Roundup: Ashley Cole’s affair, Jermain Defoe’s new hat, Ronaldo scores a bonus, Henry does something right and Keegan needs to Wise up

In this week’s WagSnatch Roundup footballer’s shenanigans uncovered, Jermain Defoe likes to wear a bra instead of a hat, Ronaldo promised a pay rise if he scores, Thierry Henry is a do-gooder and Keegan gets snubbed time and time again.

Recent weeks have not been good for footballers and their WAG companions. Recent and not so recent shenanigans of some of the top England footballers are biting them on the ass and it is turning into a rather bad episode of Footballers’ Wives.

La Liga Week 19: Henry finally finds his form for Barcelona

Thierry Henry played his best game so far for Football Club Barcelona in Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Murcia. Henry didn’t get on the scoresheet but he set up goals for 17-year-old Bojan Krkic and for Samuel Eto’o who marked his last game for Barça before joining up with the Cameroon national team with a brace. Frank Rijkaard rested some players with an eye on Tuesday second leg cup match with Sevilla, so there was a start for some of the less used players such as Zambrotta, Thuram and Sylvinho.

World’s Top Goalscorer of 2007 according to IFFHS

“Soccer is a world made of numbers”. A phrase which would make any mathematician proud, with the eternal claim that you can find mathematics anywhere.

And where better to find numbers than Goal Totals: the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), the famous (and often criticized) organization that chronicles the history of football, has just published its World’s Top Goal Scorer of 2007 ranking.

No, the results are further from probably anything you may expect.

Top 10 EPL Entertainers

For as long as the wind is blowing, we might as well be surfing the wave…

After FourFourTwo’s Top 100 footballers list, the ‘Association of Football Statisticians’ Top 100 Greatest Ever Footballers, and recently once again FourFourTwo’s 2007 EPL ‘Rich List’, The Sun is jumping onto the Top 100 bandwagon and starting a Top 10 ranking of their own: every week the ‘most trustworthy publication in the UK’ (yeah, cheap shot) will bring you the latest list of the best (and worst) things from the world of sport.

This week, it’s a Top 10 of the most entertaining footballers in EPL history. Like any other ranking, this article is to be taken with a grain of salt. Fire your cheers/comments/insults away, but remember… I’m only the messenger. :)

Top 100 Greatest Ever Footballers

It’s that time of the year again. The time when a random (ok, let’s call it ‘well-respected’ if you prefer) football publication makes an “All Time Best” ranking that never fails to create controversy and offend a few people.

FourFourTwo did one of those last month, this time it’s the turn of the ‘Association of Football Statisticians’ to make its Top 100, after studying every fact and figure from the beautiful game over the past 100 years.

Points are given for goals scored by forwards and clean sheets for defenders. Players also get awarded marks for trophies won, captaincy and the level they played at throughout their career.

Grading Summer 2007’s 20 Most Expensive Transfers

Some might think it would be hasty to make such an assessment so early into the season (after all, European leagues have only begun for a month or two) but it is interesting nonetheless to have a preliminary look at how some of this Summer’s signings are performing. Indeed, some managers (such as Sir Alex Ferguson, who isn’t entirely happy about how Anderson has coped with the club’s expectations at Man Utd) are bound to get restless if their new players don’t start delivering soon.

So from Gazzetta dello Sport, I’ve made a table list of the 20 most expensive transfers of the Summer break, along with a letter grade for their performance so far. What are your thoughts?

How will Arsenal replace Henry?

Ed’s note - discuss this in the Soccerlens forum.

Now that all the dust has finally settled, it is time for Arsenal fans to start thinking about the future.

Aliadiere has departed for Middlesborough, and though I always felt bad for how unlucky he was, he was just simply never going to be good enough. Baptista has also left, which is probably for the best because as much as I wanted him to succeed, he was utter crap. The sale was that of leading goal scorer Thierry Henry. And regardless of what you think of the way he left, it is time to move on and look at who we are going to get to replace him.

Is Bent really worth more than Henry?

Over the past week many Arsenal fans have been shocked to hear that their ‘greatest ever’ was sold for the ‘miserable’ fee of £16.1m. Meanwhile the rest of England was equally shocked to hear that former Charlton striker Darren Bent commanded a higher transfer fee (£16.5m) than the Arsenal legend.

And although it is obvious that Tottenham have been ripped off by Charlton, it might not be as outrageous as many people think that Darren Bent cost more than Thierry Henry. In truth there are many factors that might just make Bent a more valuable player than Henry.

Why did Klose and Henry leave?

So - Klose is off to Bayern.

Henry is off to Barcelona.

I don’t quite know why, but these two headlines got me worked up. The thing is - I just don’t get why they’re leaving. On top of that, I don’t get how both players seem to have had the feeling that they had the undeniable right to leave.

Selling Henry will help Arsenal be a better team

There was a time, 2 years ago and more, when the thought of Henry leaving Arsenal had me in a cold sweat.

He was at that time Mr Arsenal, everything that made us who we were and epitomized the football we played. Add to that the presence on the field and those amazing goals, I wonder now what is going to happen? I have taken some time out, away from the tabloids and had a good look at the last two seasons with Henry as Captain. Here is my conclusion:

This move is best for Arsenal.

Classic Henry Pic

Tagged: Thierry Henry

Love the hair, love the reminder that players are human and that Henry, for all his goals and class, is still only 30 and in any other world, would be one of the boys.

I wonder if he still has that boombox?

Arsenal’s Henry-shaped demons point to a Fabless future

Ok, let’s have it - anyone who wants to bitch about the headline, just do it right now - come on, go down to the comments, scream ‘cunt’ and come back up. I’m waiting…

Back? This article is going to look at Arsenal’s future from the perspective of a Manchester United fan - from someone who still respects the Gunners‘ ability to beat the best teams in the world on their day. You guys are frackin’ good.

So let’s get this started already.

How will Henry fit in at Barça?

Let’s make a couple of things clear to begin with. First is that Samuel Eto’o is not going to leave FC Barcelona this summer, the player has no desire to leave and Laporta and Txiki Beguiristain have both stated that they want him to stay. Second, Rijkaard is not going to change the system to accomodate Henry. We are not going to see Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Messi and Henry playing together unless the team is losing and Rijkaard has to take a risk. So, if they are all fit, one of them will have to start as a substitute.

I hope Henry is not leaving

Update: It’s confirmed - and the twist is that Henry says he’s leaving because Wenger won’t be extended his contract beyond 2008 at Arsenal.

Cue doomsday calls from the media. Arsenal will survive though, and it’ll be interested to see who comes in this summer (and the next, if Wenger is really to go).

Arsenal fans turn on Henry, Manchester United fans turn on Ruud

Generally, football fans are loyal to a fault.

But sometimes, we’re fickle, us football fans. We tear our heroes down savagely, without remorse. Or worse, we forget our love for them, allowing our memories to be corrupted by deception staged by the media and sometimes our own clubs.

Back when I started Soccerlens, the second article I wrote was about Thierry Henry and his contract wrangle with Arsenal.
