Rafael Benitez
A master of the tactical game and of winning pressure one-off games, Rafael Benitez has the pedigree to be a great manager. Made his name with Valencia before moving to England to manage Liverpool and has led them to 2 Champions League finals in 3 years. That’s more than Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and SAF, so that’s saying a lot.
Valencia won La Liga under him, but Liverpool have been off the pace in the league so far as Rafa in my opinion still has to get his tactics in line with the demands of the Premiership.
Two Princes, Goodbye Benitez and Lady Luck
Whilst Reading arguably equalled Leeds feat in triumphing over one of the ‘top four’ bigger sides some serious questions have been raised regarding Liverpool football club, both on and off the pitch, and fingers are being pointed at Rafael Benitez. Rumours have been recklessly slung around about how Liverpool’s potential failure to secure a top…
Batting for Rafa and Liverpool
From King of Liverpool to the laughing stock of England – Rafael Benitez has fallen from his high perch and now the sheer disappointment (not hatred, this is not Manchester United after all) of fans and pundits alike means that Rafa is under more pressure performances-wise than at any other time of his managerial career…
Rafa for Life? It’s more like a life sentence for Liverpool
Football writing is more often than not locked in the present, the now. There’s no perspective, and while this helps sells more newspaper copies (and gets more pageviews), it also means that readers are told a pack of half-truths and absolute lies every day of the week. So when Liverpool went on a rampage in…
England’s World Cup Chances: 23 into 11 Doesn’t Go
For the mathematicians out there you’ll instantly recognise the numbers 11 and 23 as ‘prime numbers’, meaning of course that they are only divisible by themselves and 1. For the football fans out there you will recognise 11 as the number of players you can have on the pitch at any one time and 23…
Rafael Benitez is Scrooge
A Christmas Carol is quite possibly the best Christmas story ever. It teaches us that life isn’t all about being successful and wealthy and that we should try to be happy and make those around us happy, and this is illustrated through Ebeneezer Scrooge. Traumatized in his sleep one night, Scrooge is visited by ghosts…
Liverpool FC is Tiny Tim
As enticing as it was to make Leo Messi Tiny Tim, it would only have been for their similar heights. According to the great people at Wikipedia as well as my vague memory of A Christmas Carol, Tiny Tim is a poor boy who is very ill and is in need of dire medical attention to…
The Biggest Losers of 2009: Ranieri, Referees, Ireland and More!
There are winners and there are losers in football and it’s time to weed out those who suffered in 2009. But losing is not a simple concept. Some are major contributors to their own downfall and deserve the brick bats that come their way, while others are victims of circumstances and probably deserve better…..and in…
The Biggest Winners of 2009: Barca, Blanc, Benitez (?) and More
Once again it’s that time of year when we like to kick-back and ask “where did that one go?”, break out the Christmas spirit, and reflect on the football year that was. What were our highs and lows? Who stole the headlines and, more importantly, who won the prizes and is most deserving of our…
Arsene Wenger drags Arsenal back in the title race
Arsene Wenger gives his team a rocket after going one down at half time to come back and win at Anfield 2-1.
Liverpool fans aren’t happy after shock Arsenal defeat
I just got back from the Soccerlens match-viewing party in Lahore for the Liverpool-Arsenal game, and I can’t forget the look on the face of Steven Gerrard 3 minutes into extra time – total disgust at his team’s situation and how far behind they had fallen after the heady days of last season. Steven Gerrard…
