Rafael Benitez

A master of the tactical game and of winning pressure one-off games, Rafael Benitez has the pedigree to be a great manager. Made his name with Valencia before moving to England to manage Liverpool and has led them to 2 Champions League finals in 3 years. That’s more than Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and SAF, so that’s saying a lot.

Valencia won La Liga under him, but Liverpool have been off the pace in the league so far as Rafa in my opinion still has to get his tactics in line with the demands of the Premiership.

Football Managers Are Hypocrites

Football Managers Are Hypocrites

Rarely a week goes by where we don’t get some manager, player, or chief executive spouting off to the press about some vapid issue or another. This week we were treated to Ian Holloway and Alex Ferguson raging about whatever matter of contention was vexing them at that particular moment while Arsene Wenger criticizes opponents…

Gareth Bale and Spurs Beat Inter Milan 3-1 as Rafael Benitez Goes Eric Cantona Crazy, Again…

Tottenham Hotspur and Gareth Bale (again) produced one of the great European performances as they swept Inter Milan, the current European champions, aside 3-1 at White Hart Lane. Harry Redknapp’s side were brilliant right from the very first whistle and thoroughly deserved their win over Rafael Benitez’s shell-shocked troops. It is no exaggeration to say…

Rafael Benitez Goes Eric Cantona Crazy As Inter Milan Beat Gareth Bale (and Spurs…) 4-3

On the eve of Liverpool’s, sorry Inter Milan’s, 4-3 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League, Rafael Benitez delivered one of the most bizarre press conferences of all time. It will be a moment that will go down in football folklore and leaves Benitez looking like a very bitter man altogether. Think back to…

Is Frank Rijkaard The Man To Oversee Liverpool’s New Dawn?

Is Frank Rijkaard The Man To Oversee Liverpool’s New Dawn?

Following a shameful third-place finish last season and an underwhelming start to this season’s Super Lig campaign, the Galatasaray hierarchy have decided to draw a decisive line under coach Frank Rijkaard‘s ill-fated 16 months in charge today. A statement released by the club this morning reads thusly; “As a result of talks with technical director…

Why is Rafa taking the rap for Roy’s woes?

With the financial turmoil at Anfield eased (and my knowledge on finance not enough to fill the back of Tom Hicks’ fan mail), attention turned back to the football pitch and back to beleaguered manager Roy Hodgson on Sunday for a meeting of Liverpool’s red and blue halves.

Liverpool FC Saved From Administration By Boston Red Sox Owner Bid

Liverpool FC has been saved from the ignominy of administration and a potential nine point reduction by the £300 million bid from John Henry and the New England Sporting Venture. After years of uncertainty under American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett, fans of Liverpool FC were given the news they were all dying to…

Stat Attack: How will Barca fare without Messi and will Eto’o ever stop improving?

Barcelona and Inter Milan are two powerhouses of Europe. Both have featured in the Champions League time and again and both have consistently won their respective domestic league – Inter have won it 5-in-a-row now. Barcelona are going to pay the Russian club, Rubin Kazan a visit in their Group D encounter and Inter are…

Benitez: Liverpool directors know nothing about football

I like Rafa – I’ve defended him in the past when even the Liverpool fans had turned on him – but he can be terribly transparent when it comes to manipulating the press. So when he says: “The last year at Liverpool I had directors who knew nothing about football and you couldn’t talk about…

Why Rafa Benitez has already failed at Inter

Why Rafa Benitez has already failed at Inter

It has been all downhill since that ‘great’ Liverpool second-place Premier League finish for Rafa Benitez, hasn’t it? And now after a sour end to Benitez’s six-year reign at Anfield, he was hired as a replacement for Jose Mourinho at Inter. Needless to say, the appointment puts Benitez in the hottest seat possible. He faces…

Rafa’s Signings: The Best and the Worst

Rafa’s Signings: The Best and the Worst

The Reds, as we all know have not been backed by a billionaire owner who can afford many mistakes done in the transfer market. Signing players properly is of top priority when you’re in financial turmoil. Recently, before the resignation of Rafael Benitez, we saw him take a lot of criticism for failed transfers. When…
