Michael Carrick
Michael Carrick is a former West Ham and Tottenham player, now anchoring Manchester United’s midfield and vying for a spot in the England line-up along with Manchester United teammate Owen Hargreaves. An excellent passer of the ball, Carrick’s strengths lie in his ability to pick out the right man out wide or up front, his interceptions and the general way he influences the game even when he doesn’t have the ball.
Can also be a playmaker instead of a defensive midfielder – and from what I saw in 2006/2007, he’s got a good shot on him as well.
Arsenal youngest, Manchester United oldest? It’s all relative…
Is it possible to be too old to win a title? Sir Alex Ferguson certainly thinks so. According to him, Chelsea are too old to win a title. At least, that’s how the Guardian interpreted Sir Alex’s comments (and far be it for someone to suggest that a British newspaper somehow blew an innocuous quote…
Can Tottenham Hold Onto Their Stars And Break Into The Top Four?
There is a tendency within many different avenues of football to overplay the concept of a ‘big club’ in world football. By nature, there will always be disagreements over who are and who aren’t the ‘big clubs’ in the game today, and what criteria defines this honour, but ask a fan, pundit, whoever you like…
10 Highlights From Manchester United’s Double-Winning 07/08 Season
Watched Manchester United’s 07/08 Season Review over the weekend (grab the torrent here) and it was quite an entertaining 2 and half hours. It also gave me some perspective on the season that went by – perspective that I think is useful considering the Ronaldo saga, the transfer speculation this summer and for predicting United’s…
Tottenham confirm bargain £30m deal for 4 Manchester United players
Juande Ramos has decided to splash the cash in Manchester United’s direction with Tottenham picking up a host of stars from the Manchester United firesale. Tottenham are reported to have struck deals with United keeper Ben Foster, former Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick as well as French internationals Louis Saha and Mikael Silvestre. The combined deal…
Fergie’s Greatest Ever? We may well be looking at them…
Towards the end of 2006, certain pundits and magazines were proclaiming the birth of Sir Alex Ferguson’s third (for some, fourth) great team stemming from his 20-year tenure at Manchester United.
Soccerlens Match of the Week Preview: Liverpool vs. Manchester United
Anytime two of England’s biggest clubs face off, it makes for a must-see occasion. But, today’s match at Anfield between north-west rivals Liverpool and Manchester United isn’t the only big ticket in England this weekend, as on Sunday, London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea battle it out at the Emirates Stadium. Both clashes shape up to…
11 Reasons why Michael Carrick will be a legend
When Michael Carrick first came to Manchester United, there was a lot of criticism. He couldn’t tackle or shoot, and we didn’t need a short-passer to replace the midfield general that was Roy Keane. And wasn’t 18m too much for a passing midfielder who couldn’t do much else? In 8 months (September to April), Michael…
Where are Michael Carrick’s critics now?
Thought I’d update this article with this Ferguson interview where he talks about how Carrick has improved in a Man Utd shirt. When Michael Carrick signed for Manchester United last summer, there were plenty of Manchester United fans who questioned the deal (the player as well as the money spent on him). No Roy Keane,…
England need Beckham, Nolan and lessons in getting the basics right
Paul Robinson’s explanation of that goal (video below) only serves to highlight the pressure and desperation that grips the England camp. If you win, people laugh and say it’s not good enough. If you lose, people call for your head and demand answers.
Manchester United back on top – a very late review plus quality pics
I was away for the weekend, so excuse the late, late review of the game. Apart from the obvious (Chelsea drew and Manchester United won so we’re back on the top of the Premiership table), there are 2 or 3 talking points from the game that I’d like to address. Mainly, the form of Nemanja…
