Michael Carrick News Archives

Michael Carrick is a former West Ham and Tottenham player, now anchoring Manchester United’s midfield and vying for a spot in the England line-up along with Manchester United teammate Owen Hargreaves. An excellent passer of the ball, Carrick’s strengths lie in his ability to pick out the right man out wide or up front, his interceptions and the general way he influences the game even when he doesn’t have the ball.

Can also be a playmaker instead of a defensive midfielder - and from what I saw in 2006/2007, he’s got a good shot on him as well.

Tottenham confirm bargain £30m deal for 4 Manchester United players

Juande Ramos has decided to splash the cash in Manchester United’s direction with Tottenham picking up a host of stars from the Manchester United firesale.

Tottenham are reported to have struck deals with United keeper Ben Foster, former Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick as well as French internationals Louis Saha and Mikael Silvestre.

The combined deal will cost Tottenham £30m, and while some reports have suggested that Manchester United were giving Saha and Silvestre for free, we have confirmation from Tottenham that they will indeed be paying for the services of Saha and Silvestre.

Fergie’s Greatest Ever? We may well be looking at them…

Towards the end of 2006, certain pundits and magazines were proclaiming the birth of Sir Alex Ferguson’s third (for some, fourth) great team stemming from his 20-year tenure at Manchester United.

Soccerlens Match of the Week Preview: Liverpool vs. Manchester United

Anytime two of England’s biggest clubs face off, it makes for a must-see occasion.

But, today’s match at Anfield between north-west rivals Liverpool and Manchester United isn’t the only big ticket in England this weekend, as on Sunday, London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea battle it out at the Emirates Stadium.

Both clashes shape up to be pivotal in affecting the early-season standings, as the EPL’s ‘Big Four” are currently 1-4 in the current league table.

Arsenal - 37 points
Manchester United - 36 points
Chelsea - 34 points
Liverpool - 30 points

Aside from their excellence domestically, all four sides have qualified for the round of 16 in the Champions League for the third time in four years, with Manchester United and Chelsea topping their respective groups.

First billing goes to the showdown between the Reds and the Red Devils, and so without further ado, let’s kick off the preview of the match.

11 Reasons why Michael Carrick will be a legend

When Michael Carrick first came to Manchester United, there was a lot of criticism. He couldn’t tackle or shoot, and we didn’t need a short-passer to replace the midfield general that was Roy Keane. And wasn’t 18m too much for a passing midfielder who couldn’t do much else?

In 8 months (September to April), Michael Carrick has answered his critics, and then some. Here’s a look at 11 iron-clad reasons why this man is every bit a Manchester United legend in the making.

Where are Michael Carrick’s critics now?

Thought I’d update this article with this Ferguson interview where he talks about how Carrick has improved in a Man Utd shirt.

When Michael Carrick signed for Manchester United last summer, there were plenty of Manchester United fans who questioned the deal (the player as well as the money spent on him). No Roy Keane, they said. Can’t tackle, too slow on the ball, too expensive, etc.

England need Beckham, Nolan and lessons in getting the basics right

Paul Robinson’s explanation of that goal (video below) only serves to highlight the pressure and desperation that grips the England camp.

If you win, people laugh and say it’s not good enough.

If you lose, people call for your head and demand answers.

Manchester United back on top - a very late review plus quality pics

I was away for the weekend, so excuse the late, late review of the game.

Apart from the obvious (Chelsea drew and Manchester United won so we’re back on the top of the Premiership table), there are 2 or 3 talking points from the game that I’d like to address.

Mainly, the form of Nemanja Vidic, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney.

Will Tottenham regret selling off Carrick to Manchester United?

Paul Robinson says that Carrick’s sale to Manchester United was a ’step back’ for Tottenham - and it’s a position that has its merits (and certainly when Carrick says that he’s moved to a ‘massive’ club that just adds to the fun).

Tottenham Hotspur: What can we expect in 2006/2007?

Last season filled every single Spurs fan with an enormous amount of pride. For the first time in recent history, the White Hart Lane outfit had not only managed to keep up with their North London neighbours in the league, but also provide stiff competition in the North London derbies.

So what to expect for the season ahead? A repeat performance, improvement or decline? To examine the potential of the season ahead, I will look at several factors; Michael Carrick, transfers and tactics.

Manchester United - The Stars

Yesterday we looked at Manchester United’s old guard - the players that will have to be replaced in the next 2 seasons.

Today we look at the 5 players that will form the core of Manchester United’s team this season - 5 players (or 6, if we sign someone decent) on whom our season will depend on more than anyone else and who will be most instrumental in shaping United’s future.

Manchester United Fans Wont See Carrick Till September

Ferguson went so far as to call it a curse against Manchester United, and not many fans would argue - Michael Carrick’s foot injury against Ajax last night put him on the list of already injured players that now includes Neville, Heinze, Saha, Vidic, Ferdinand and O’Shea.

Carrick Is Not The Answer For Manchester United

In how many different interviews will Owen Hargreaves have to announce to the world that he wants to play in the English Premier League before Manchester United take notice and bring him in?

With our record/luck/history, Ferguson will wait two years on Carrick, and Hargreaves will end up helping Arsenal win the Champions League.
