Fernando Torres is a Spanish international and currently a Liverpool striker. An extremely talented individual, Torres was tipped for greatness from the start of his playing career and he spent several years at Atletico Madrid (some of them as captain) before finally giving in to his dream of playing in the Champions League and moving to the Premier League. Born in 1984, Torres has achieved a lot in his short career and will undoubtedly go on to win many trophies in the future.

While Manchester United keep closing the gap between themselves and rivals Liverpool in terms of league titles, a debutant playing at Anfield is close to matching (and if opportunities permit, breaking) a record set by a former Manchester United striker.
With 3 games left in the Premier League (2-3 more in Europe), Fernando Torres has 30 goals from 42 appearances, and 22 from 31 appearances in the Premier League. This leaves him just 1 short of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of 23 goals from 32 appearances, and 6 short of his overall first season (2001/2002) tally of 36 goals from 45 games.
These numbers are phenomenal - RVN’s strike rate of 150 goals in 201 games is legendary and Torres can bring that consistency of 4-5 seasons (at least) to Liverpool, then who knows where they’ll go?

Yes, we’re back to that age old rivalry between the Red-Men from Liverpool, and the Blues from London, the Angels of the North against the Arseholes of the South. So here is a very Liverpool view on why we will beat Chelsea, and then see Fergie in the final in Moscow.

It’s that time of the season when the player of the season awards start being handed out. It’s also the time of the season when us fans argue about who has been the best player in each of the positions. It is unlikely that any two fans would select an identical ‘team of the year’ but for the purposes of debate and ‘friendly’ discussion I thought I’d have a go at putting my ideas on paper.
I have selected a squad of twenty-two from which I will select my final Premier League eleven. I just know that the players I select will be hugely proud to be recognised by me, a man who all the top players listen to. Mmm.
I’m going for a good old fashioned 4-4-2. Not because it is the only way to play but because it makes it easier to put down on paper!

Like last season, Ronaldo is a strong favourite for winning the Professional Footballers’ Association players’ player of the year and the PFA young player of the year awards.

Rafael Benitez has demonstrated how to best utilise Dirk Kuyt effectively in the last 10 games that Liverpool have played. Whereas before Kuyt was an auxillary striker he now plays out on the right wing.
In the 4-2-1-3 (and NOT 4-2-3-1) formation that the manager employed the team has won nine, drawn one and lost one of the last eleven games in all competitions. With these set of results have come some very impressive perfomances, none more so than the derby win against Everton. Furthermore, Gerrard’s ‘best’ position has also been solved. The understanding between Torres and Gerrard has developed to such a point that they have become one of the most dangerous attacking partnerships not just in England, but in Europe as well.
However the key point of this article is to highlight how the use of Kuyt on the wing has helped the team achieve a better balance. Attacking and defending have been improved upon hitherto slackness. With Babel and Kuyt on the wing Liverpool carry more goal scoring threat in the team. That is the key reason why Jermaine Pennant has been unable to figure in the squad, let alone the first eleven while Benayoun along with the other two aforementioned players have.

I won’t mention anything about what happened to Arsenal’s Eduardo over the weekend, since it’s been talked about plenty already, but I send my get well wishes towards him, and hope he’s back scoring goals (but not against Manchester United) again as soon as possible.
It was a pretty important weekend of football in the Premier League, with the race for the title and for European places getting ever tighter as we edge towards the home stretch.
At the other end, the relegation battle is ongoing, and though it’s almost a given that Derby will be playing Championship football next term, several other sides are fighting to not join the Rams in the second level.

Liverpool 2, Inter Milan 0.
Before kick-off, that scoreline would been considered unlikely - but as hoped by Liverpool fans, Rafa’s men rose to their next European challenge and produced as good a display as could be hoped for (considering the buildup) to beat 10-man Inter Milan 2-0.
The scoreline hardly tells the whole story though.

Update - Second Leg Preview: Internazionale v Liverpool - Reds and Nerazurri prepare to paint San Siro with the colours of Europe.
Update - First Leg Match Reports: ‘Inter have it all to do as Liverpool finally find the killer touch‘ and
‘Liverpool overwhelm Inter with aggression, tactics and simulation‘.
The last few seasons have seen Inter Milan take a stranglehold over the rest of Italian football, as the Nerazzurri have won back to back Scudettos in the last two seasons, along with back to back Coppa Italia trophies in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
This season has been no different, as Inter appear to be well on their way to a third straight championship, and are in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals.

According to many observers, Rafael Benitez does not know his best eleven. Well, perhaps we as the Liverpool fans we should put forward our suggestions and see which one is the most popular.

It’s comic, it’s tragic and it’s pathetic. Every season Atletico Madrid start their season saddled with a sack full of hope, hype and expectation and at the end of every season there’s rue, regret and an all too familiar disappointment wailing all around.
This time too there’s a strong suspicion that Atleti are here for good; that they are seriously looking to consolidate their position in the top four, that they might even make a run for the title challenge, that they do possess the strength and depth in their squad pre-requisite for a title contender.

Anytime two of England’s biggest clubs face off, it makes for a must-see occasion.
But, today’s match at Anfield between north-west rivals Liverpool and Manchester United isn’t the only big ticket in England this weekend, as on Sunday, London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea battle it out at the Emirates Stadium.
Both clashes shape up to be pivotal in affecting the early-season standings, as the EPL’s ‘Big Four” are currently 1-4 in the current league table.
Arsenal - 37 points
Manchester United - 36 points
Chelsea - 34 points
Liverpool - 30 points
Aside from their excellence domestically, all four sides have qualified for the round of 16 in the Champions League for the third time in four years, with Manchester United and Chelsea topping their respective groups.
First billing goes to the showdown between the Reds and the Red Devils, and so without further ado, let’s kick off the preview of the match.

When Liverpool signed Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid in the summer for a record £26.5 million (although the player himself said to The Times that the transfer fee was £20 million) a number of doubters raised their eyebrows, lashed out their pens and predicted that Torres will be just another Fernando, an allusion to the failed Spanish import Fernando Morientes. But Torres’ 12 goals so far in Liverpool colors and his smooth adaptability to the pace of the English Premier League has exhibited that one of the most talented youngsters in Europe is a mature footballer too.

Some might think it would be hasty to make such an assessment so early into the season (after all, European leagues have only begun for a month or two) but it is interesting nonetheless to have a preliminary look at how some of this Summer’s signings are performing. Indeed, some managers (such as Sir Alex Ferguson, who isn’t entirely happy about how Anderson has coped with the club’s expectations at Man Utd) are bound to get restless if their new players don’t start delivering soon.
So from Gazzetta dello Sport, I’ve made a table list of the 20 most expensive transfers of the Summer break, along with a letter grade for their performance so far. What are your thoughts?

Fernando Torres is destined to be in the media spotlight (it must be in his DNA) - whether he’s at AM or Liverpool or playing for Spain, the world will always have time to talk about Torres.

About three weeks ago the feeling around Anfield was one of ecstasy and joy; Liverpool had just beaten Derby County 6-0 without star players Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher- this victory took them to the top of the table for the first time in years.
As of September 25th, 2007 however the mood is slightly more somber- although Liverpool have not lost a game in that time, a succession of three draws in a row (one against Porto in the Champions League) has put a dampener on fans spirits, as well as sent Liverpool to fourth in the table (albeit with a game in hand).
So, who exactly is to blame for these slipups?

There’s a lot of talk (smack) from Liverpool rivals about how Torres is too expensive, how he can’t score goals and how Liverpool will still be a defensive-minded team with Torres around.
Everyone’s missing the point. Liverpool have bought pure talent and a player who will do much more than score goals for them.

Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool have all signed strikers this summer (already!) and there is considerable debate about whether each striker is suitable to the ambitions of the buying club.
A quick fact check, then:

Sweet justice? Reality bites?
Tottenham get Bent for 16.5 mil, Liverpool are reported to have agreed a 27m deal with Atletico Madrid for Fernando Torres.
For two clubs who have roundly berated the top two sides in the Premiership for ‘buying’ the title, what will they say now?

The big news yesterday (painfully fabricated pieced together using old quotes and selective memory) was that of Liverpool making their play for Fernando Torres, seemingly leaving rivals Man Utd in their wake.
Today’s grand news (after Capello’s ridiculous sacking and Coleman’s semi-ridiculous signing) is that Tottenham are close to getting Bent.
Considering that both clubs (Liverpool and Tottenham) will be spending top dollar (in terms of relative finances) on their respective targets, the big question is this:
Which club is getting the better deal?

Seems to be that these two are being compared to each other constantly, always linked with moves to the Premiership. We’ve looked at both players and what they have to offer - read up and then offer your views (and pick) in the comments.
