Goalkeeper scores 80-yard goal

Montgomery Town FC goalie Steve Goodwin scores a wonder-goal from the edge of his own penalty area. Fabulous, one in a billion strike (and goes straight in unlike Paul Robinson’s punt that bounced once in front of Ben Foster before going in) and proof that football is about taking your chances (if the opposition keeper had caught that ball, it would have been classified as a waste of a free kick).

The upside? Goodwin and Montgomery Town get some fame (thanks to a local politician). The downside? Goodwin ruins everything with his goal celebration (what, no sliding, no fist pumping, no ripping your shirt off?), which just goes on to show that it’s crowds and TV that bring out the real entertainers in us.

Cesc Fabregas on fire - literally!

Arsenal fans seem to put a lot of faith in their young Spanish midfielder, and with good reason - Fabregas has often displayed a coolness of temperament ever since breaking on the scene for Arsenal that is rarely seen in footballers, regardless of age or experience. Arsenal fans know how lucky they are to have Cesc, but perhaps even his manager doesn’t know what the protege is actually capable of.

Apparently, after destroying his agent’s office to get himself a TV show, the Arsenal star has now taken the next step in creating his public image - and put himself on fire.

Yup. Fab actually has gasoline poured over him - quite a lot of fun, if you ask me. Here’s the video:

If they did that to Gallas I’m not sure the fire extinguishers would have been out so quickly though…

Euro 2008 Nike Video

Nike just released a new video in their buildup to Euro 2008 - it’s well-directed (very ‘in your face’ and raw) and it features the likes of Wenger, Fabregas, Gallas, Ronaldo, Rooney, Materazzi, Ibrahimovic, and a couple of babes and ends with…well, I’ll let you see that for yourself.

They’re supposed to be showing a special feature-length version of this video during the two Champions League games next week. Figure they’d use a similar video cut edition for a future FIFA game?

Here’s the Nike vid:

Edit: And here is that 2 min version of the ad:

Can Rooney score this goal against Barcelona?

The scene is May 1991, Feyenoord stadium in Rotterdam. The European Cup Winners’ Cup final is about to kick off. Manchester United and Barcelona line up against each other, with United boasting the core of the side which would go on to challenge for the league title next season and then win the Premier League the season after that.

Manchester United would go on to win the match, thanks to a Mark Hughes special (and some calamitous defending by Barcelona, including the keeper’s gaffe that gifted Sparky a goal).

Manchester United 1-0 Roma and Barcelona 1-0 Schalke - Video Highlights

Highlights from last night’s Champions League quarter-final ties:

Manchester United 1-0 Roma

Even with Ronaldo and Rooney on the bench, United were just too strong for Roma. Turning point of the game, Del Rossi’s penalty miss for Roma.

Barcelona 1-0 Schalke

Early aggression by Schalke could not turn into goals. In the end, the Catalans strolled past the Germans with a Yaya Toure winner.

The Perfect Free Kick?

Cristiano Ronaldo. Straight up, straight in. No time to react, no time to even breathe. Perhaps not the best player, but definitely one of the best free kicks ever taken by CR.

There have been better goals than this, surely - I remember a Leighton Baines free kick against United that was a rocket into the top corner, beat van der Sar even though he tried to stop it.

If you’ve seen a better free kick, feel free to drop the link in the comments.

David Beckham fires LA Galaxy to first win of season

David Beckham scored his the first goal and set Landon Donovan (who set Becks up for the first one) up for another as LA Galaxy win 2-0 against the San Jose Earthquakes. I don’t care what the match was like. I don’t particularly care about the LA Galaxy either.

All I care is that Beckham scores - and without being presumptious, that’s a view many other non-American ‘newcomers’ to the MLS hold as well.

Here’s hoping for many more from Becks this season. Here’s the goal (don’t have the Beckham assist / the second goal, if anyone has a video link to it please drop it in the comments.

Will Beckham start when England play the US at Wembley? I imagine pressure from sponsors will make it happen, but then Beckham sells, and that’s what football in the US needs in the first place - the ability to attract massive attention.

Cristiano Ronaldo: A Touch of Humility

After I read Graham Fisher’s superb article about Cristiano Ronaldo, I was reminded of something from last year. I saw a goal by Ronaldo, along with his resulting display, against his childhood team, Sporting Lisbon. I wrote a blog about it on 19 September 2007, and believe that it would serve as an interesting complement to Graham’s piece.

Pele, Best, Maradona or Cristiano Ronaldo? How does CR rank with the best?

Comparisons can be a pain in the backside. My dad says that nobody was ever better than Tom Finney or Puskas, my older brother says George Best and Pele have no equals, I believe Maradona to be the best ever and my son says that Cristiano Ronaldo has more than the lot of them put together.

It has always been this way. We always think that the top players of ‘our generation’ are the best of all time. It is impossible to compare these great players because they are all from a different place and time. Of course George Best wouldn’t be as quick, as fit or strong enough to play in today’s Premiership and Ronaldo would have been even more of a phenomenon than he is now if you transported him back thirty or forty years.

You can only judge them by how good they were amongst their contemporaries. It is no good listening to anecdotal evidence because the fans of each player will only tell you why their particular favourite is the best of all time. The only way to judge this fairly is to look at the facts and figures. So let’s do it:
