Steven Gerrard the Hypocrite

Steven Gerrard - Diver - Liverpool

Liverpool captain, Liverpool legend, England vice-captain (and legend-in-making) and the standard-bearer of English morality and ethical behavior, one Steven Gerrard, has many fans.

Indeed, despite his insistence that ‘people like Carvalho are ruining the game’ (the implication being that the English fight fair and not dirty like those scumbag foreigners), he is still one of the most respected players in the Premier League (by his peers as well as the massive Liverpool faithful).

We shouldn’t be calling Steven Gerrard a hypocrite - after all, when last year this website called him a diver, Liverpool fans came out in the streets to protest. They were right too - diving as a tradition has nothing to do with Liverpool (they’re more of the hopeless fantasy sort, Newcastle United 20 years after their last title, except that they’ve won way more titles than the Geordies and therefore their pain - and openness to ridicule - is palpably more).

However, as a figurehead, as the boy wonder turned captain, as the leader of Scousers and the man who brought them to Champions League glory (although the starting point was that picture at the top, which tells a whole new story), Steven Gerrard has put himself out, thanks to numerous sound-bites and his autobiography, as the chief defender of the morality of English footballers.

I’d like you to see the following video in that light. Much thanks to Scott from Republik of Mancunia for compiling this:

So…are English players really as clean as Gerrard says they are?

  1. Bilal, you are definitely after Mike Parry’s job, there is no doubt in my mind anymore.
However, there is something of what you write that had been bugging me for a while, its to do with the big starts of English football and their attitude.

I just don’t get the feeling that the big players such as SG, or Rooney, Lumpy, or even ikle weee Owen are solders there to give themselves to the cause. They give me the impression of princess who seem to think they have right over all they survey. Of course this can probably be levelled at a few big names of the big teams, but with the point that you make Bilal, the English always ready to tell the world and more importantly themselves, that they are so superior morally, that their character is beyond reproach and their behaviour is exemplary, leads me to agree that the English, including your beloved mancs, are hypocrites.

thats our stevey :) it hurt me when stevey said diving is wrong cuz i dive alot in football to when im in the 18 yard box. Stevey is human after all

  3. frank - since I don’t know who Mike Parry is, I can only assume from the tone of your comment (voice?) that he’s a cunt of the highest order. I assure you my motives are not so evil although I am guilty of dramatising it a bit :)

Mancs, Blues, Gunners (English or not, they dive), Scousers - everybody cheats. Few people proclaim their chastity as loudly as Gerrard and Henry though.

  4. You know what, I’m really glad we won in 92 minute and some more your penalty in the last 2 seconds was denied. I watched the 1st and 2nd penalty (20 times on a frame-by-frame basis). 1st one I think if ref gives a pen and he was last line of defense he’s off. 2nd it was a shameless hand from Neville to deny a goal bound shot, only an Evertonian and ex-Man Yoo could do that…worse than diving.

As for Gerrard, I love him…lmao…credit to you Ahmed for wasting your time on these videos. You must be looking at the 4 walls crying yourself to sleep after that game yes? I love to see your face now… Liverpool 2 (Kuyt 57 92 (pen)) Everton 1 (Hyppia og 36) hahahahahahahahaha

  5. Erm..U lost me King Kong. Why would Ahmed be crying after the game when ManU won 4-1 fair and square?? And why would the video be a waste of time? It just goes to show how big a hypocrite Gerrard is. The video simply offers visual prove of how Captain Marvelous contradicts his self righteous sermons. And of course it provides good entertainment:D Thanks Ahmed, good post.

  6. I doubt Ahmed is that sorry about the match, since he’s a Man Utd supporter.

To me, Gerrard start diving and cheating, when their team is in trouble. Every time he’s under pressure, he comes up with this stuff. The worst thing to me is not him diving and cheating, because most players do it to some extend. To me the worst thing is that Gerrard seems to go unpunished about with his cheating, which is just rediculous. I don’t know how he’s made that reputation for himself, but refs no longer seem to look at him as a regular player.

Particularly the one from last season, where he punched the opponent in the face (is also in the video) - how did he not get punished for that, if not in the game then afterwards??

    He’s an overrated player imo.

  7. I got an idea right.

If you dont like what hes saying… dont listen!

Its not like hes shouting it in your face is it!

I’m not a liverpool fan, i dont think gerrard is the saint of the season but I, for one, think that this is just plain sadddd.

    “Clap,Clap,Clap”
Good on ya boys and girls, now that you’ve caught out ONE player then how about revieling the rest?
I’m in my forty’s and diving was unheard of, now it seems the new generation of players would rather swim in grass than try to keep on their feet.
I’m NOT praising Gerrard but he defenantly is not the only one to dive and he isn’t the first to bring it to the game.
Whether you support Arsenal, Manc, Villa, etc,etc diving is within your ranks, so stop bitchin and lets try to stop it full stop.
By booing ALL players (Yes including your own) maybe just maybe they might stop.

  9. a) I didn’t make the vid

    b) stopping the ball with your hand (knowing you’d get carded) and giving your keeper another shot at saving the goal is extremely daring and self-sacrificing in principle, and something that is far more noble than diving.

To explain - a deliberate handball in full view of the ref to prevent a certain goal is self-sacrificing, a handball committed with the intention of conning the ref is sheer stupidity and worth punishing (equal to diving, don’t see how it’s worse, it’s still conning).

    c) I was a bit disappointed that Liverpool won, but when I found out how they won (refereeing ineptitude) it helped alleviate the pain…

    d) 4-1, away from home, at Aston Villa, where you need a dive (albeit with a first-class follow-up free kick) to win 2-1. If we’re rubbing it in, then there’s my bit.

  10. Bilal, Mike ‘the porkmister’ Parry, of talksport ‘talkshite’ fame is the biggest windup merchant on the airwaves and is a great bit of entertainment regardless of which team you support except for the bitter blues (almost formerly of Liverpool) as he is a blue nose and the vitriolic bolox he spouts about his beloved is probably tuning them to almost as hated a club as the chavs.

Further to the debate, SG is no angel, but then he is nowhere near as bad at cheating as for example John Terry, especially when defending. Or of course his mate Carvalho who is truly a master of the dark arts. Diving is not the only form of cheating, dirty defending is just as bad and often leads directly to the need to dive for ‘justice’ to be had. It can be pointed out that our very own Carra seems to be garbling with this idea also. Is this the evolution of English football?

  11. I have said many times how I’m against technology in football.

But I have an exception. If a player is caught diving or attacking another player and its missed by the ref during the game (or the ref is conned), then based on video evidence, the player should be punished retrospectively.

Until that happens, players will continue to dive like the big fat sissy’s they are.

I hate players diving, hate it hate it hate it!

I’ve never been given a good explanation as to why diving is allowed to continue. Certain other things that are missed by ref’s, bring about a charge of ‘bringing the game into disrepute’, but never diving, and if that isnt bringing the game into disrepute with all fans then I dont know what is.

  12. Ohmygosh, I with you on this one. There is plenty of video evidence that players dive that retrospective action should apply. To me diving is as bad as taking drugs; it’s cheating to gain advantage. Give divers a 3 month ban and it will soon stop.

  13. Gerrard is a diving cunt, when will you scouse twats admit to it.

  14. I dont think i ever enjoyed a result as much as the last Derby. Everton are poor - defensive and plodding. Moyes is a top class whinger and hypocrite. 61% to 39% possesion at home says it all - one shot of their own on target all day!! They didnt even score their own goal. The more Gollum whines the more enjoyable it is. How short memories are You’d probably get 6 hours of out-takes for cheating an any portuguese player or manager - go on waste your time with youre one-eyed analysis - Smile and wave boys, smile and wave !!! ;-)

  15. I agree with OhMyGosh (11). And with Donkey (13). :-)
Frank, I wasn’t aware that you get ‘good’ cheaters and ‘bad’ cheaters. Would those be ‘good’ because they don’t get caught? Or ‘good’ because its only a ‘little’ cheat? Or is it ‘good’ because the play-acting is not that abvious? please enlighten me how SG is a ‘good’ cheater and John Terry a ‘bad’ cheater? Which one will enter cheater hell with Ronaldo and Drogba?

  16. Karl, could you point me to the place where I used the word good? Or are you trying for Parry’s job too? There is no such thing as good and bad IMO, but rather shads of grey and it dose depend on which side of a debate you stand as to how grey things are. If memory servs, you’re a manc aren’t you? If so, you should be an expert on diving and faining of pain at the theatre of prawn and so I will kneel before your greater knowledge!

  17. Frank,
“Further to the debate, SG is no angel, but then he is nowhere near as bad at cheating as for example John Terry, ”

Don’t take it so seriously. I’m just wanking your chain :-)

Point is, why do people go to the ends of the earth to defend SG? Why is John Terry bad at cheating? If he’s bad, are you implying that SG is good? (I guess so, otherwise why the comparisons with angels?)
Whether a cheat is good or bad at it, does not change the fact he is a cheat. As a manc, I can understand why people would say Ronaldo is a cheat (even though for the record, I personally hold a different view), but if there is a ‘cheaters hell’, then I guess he is already condemmed to it. Question is, will the hypocrite SG meet him there? Or is he too good?

  18. Karl, I am no defender of SG even if he’s the captain of my team, my first post actually tells you the thing that is bothering at the mo. SG as much as the likes of Rooney, JT, Lumpy, Rio the forgetful etc… give me the impression of being beyond reproach when at times they represent some of the worst attitudes and believes in society.

There is a point to be made regarding the dark art of defending with some masters entering the fray at the EPL. Italian style defending is getting more and more common in England and that will invariably result in more diving unless the refs punish the weasels and thereby reducing the need to dive.

PS, are you after Parry’s job? :-)

  19. October 23, 2007Liverpool_Fan

with all due respect the term diver is used for someone who dives roughly 3 times a match (Ronaldo or Drogba). Stevey does it less than 3 times a season thats why he always get away with it he dont do it alot. He dives i agree but he aint a diver

  20. “with all due respect the term diver is used for someone who dives roughly 3 times a match”

Since when? Where did you pull that figure out from? (ahem!) No doubt it’s due to the fact ‘Stevie Me’ is only an occasional DIVER and you’re a Liverpool fan. Stevie boy does dive, as we all agree, so he is a diver, it really is that simple and clear cut.

The English media should spend a few column inches pointing this out instead of just rounding on Jonny foreigner all the time. Ronaldo does dive, I can admit it, but at least the fact we know this has meant he has cut down on it, not that anyone would admit it. Also he is fouled far more the little Stevie. Drogba started to cut it outta his game, but sadly has dropped back worse then ever.

Yes Steive is a fantastic football player, I admire his talents utterly. But he is a hypocrite, if he cut that out (and some of those stud showing tackles he’s so fond of) he’d be far, far better.

    liverpool_fan
a robber who robs once a year is the same as one who robs thrice a year. Dont give such lousy excuses. I like Gerrard, but this season, starting from the match against Aston Villa, he plays like a total cheat………..
Plus please watch the video posted above by Scott……..

  22. October 23, 2007Liverpool_Fan

iqnadirshah wtf i said 3 times a mtach thats like more than 200 dives a season how can you saw 3 dives is as bad as 200?

and those dives are on different years plus all of them there is contact im not saying enough contact to fall down but watch there is foul contact

  23. If you think there is contact in all those dives you clearly need to get down to specsavers mate. Laser eye surgery can do wonders nowadays.

  24. Can we add this to the OATS guest blog, Ahmed? That video is proof positive of why there should be review of “crucial” events like the diving in the box we saw about 10 times in that vid. It’s so pathetic. Divers (someone who dives more than 0 times) should have to wear frilly pink pants outside of their shorts for 5 consecutive matches. Put a tiarra on for good measure. Twats…

  25. Spot on. Gerrard taking the lead crusade of ethical footballing is a farce, but at least comical. I wouldn’t expect less though, from an overrated player who is struggling with his form all season. He has to express his frustration somewhere.

  26. October 24, 2007Liverpool_Fan

Brian u gotta be shitten me? u support chelsea the fucking team of dolphins mate blues and mancs shud all stay away from articles about diving cuz they cant talk shit

  27. Liverpool_Fan, you’re missing the point of the article. No one is saying United or Chelsea don’t have players who dive, and no one is condoning it. The point is they don’t come out chastising other players (by name) for their antics, Gerrard does. This article is called ‘Gerrard the Hypocrite’ not ‘Gerrard the Diver’, there is quite an important difference.

‘Mancs and Blues’ perhaps can’t talk shit, but if you’re anything to go by, Liverpool fans certainly can.

  28. October 24, 2007Shaun Daley

As a die-hard red, I find it difficult to watch. But unfortunately some of those were actual dives. Some I don’t agree with though, also you have got to think about Clattenburg at the weekend, Gerrard didn’t badger him. He said ‘He was last man’ walked past. Didn’t give him a half-hour lecture a la JT.

I’m clutching at straws I know, but I know exactly what you mean.

  29. You fucking scouse, I never said our players don’t dive - Robben, Drogba among others are known to go to ground easier than they should. The article, howver, is about your scouser piece of scum who thinks he is better than he really is, not Chelsea, Man U or Gooner divers.

  30. i think that most players dive to some extent but i agree with tomas that gerrard never gets punished for his actions. i also think that he shouldn’t attack other people especially who are foreigners. that makes me think that he is a racist even though i hope he isnt. he was one of my favorite players until i read this article and what he said about carvalho and ronaldo. why is he even mentioning them? makes me think that he is a bitch talking about other people. he doesnt need to talk about others, just play fair himself (even though he does it too) bringing others into this matter… wow just makes me mad thinking about this. im so disappointed

  31. Shun, the ref also had a yellow in his pocket for the foul, and Gerrard went up to him, said a little bit, and it then changed to red.

Maybe JT is the Three Lions skipper because he actually puts up a fight against bullshit while Gerrard is a scum about it. Think back to the JT-Deco thing from the Champions League a couple years back.

  32. October 24, 2007iqnadirshah

Thank you brian and brandon. liverpool_fan, thats the point I’m trying to make(same that this article is trying to prove). Why is Gerrard(who is one of my favourite players even though I’m a Gooner) calling others by name and commenting about their actions when he happily does the same? And it was quite evident, he did go upto the referee, who had taken out a yellow card, spoke something and then the ref brandished a red card. However much I love to watch him play, it makes me sick to see that…………..

  33. I always knew he dived in Istanbul.

  34. October 24, 2007Liverpool_Fan

i know Gerrard does this im just saying some people are calling him a cheater even though their players do it on a regular basis.

yes i get the point of the article but really can anyone name a player that has been playing football as long as gerrard and hasent dived. Alan shearer dived? Well that famous “sliP” Roy Keane had at anfield is another story? really name someone

  35. Liverpool Fan,

    You really dont get it.

Players shouldnt have a quota of dives and if they are within that then its ok.

    The point of the article in simple analagous terms is;

PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDNT THROW STONES

The sentiment that most people agree with, is that CHEATING IS CHEATING, regardless of how many times it happens.

I want diving to stop. You’re just trying to justify your players actions. Please dont, you’re just making yourself look stupid.

  36. that video has to given an award stevie g stop giving silly statements will ya this proves everything u said implies on ur sorry Ass

i know i know ronaldo dives and i wont defend him by “saying he runs so fast with quick feet and sometime he cant balance himself” but then u know nowadays not many ref gives him a free kick and sometimes genuine one also goes un-noticed but stevie g is god he will get away with everything

Liverpool_Fan - stop defending and admit it.It cant get clearer than this

  37. Good article, even as a Liverpool fan i have to admit that Stevie G has put his foot in it by criticising other players for diving when having done so himself! Personally i’d rather my team won whilst playing fair though this would probably put them at a disadvantage as its becoming increasingly common for players across the EPL to use this tactic to help get results for their team.

The way the game is going we’ll end up with more diving in the game much like already occurs with continental players who see it as an essential part of the game and are quite happy to gain any advantage for their team. Unfortunately it seems that UEFA and FIFA are unwilling to take the only action available which is to use post match video evidence to punish this as ohmygosh pointed out.

Personally i think we’re all hypocrites in our own way as we’re all happy to celebrate a victory for our team even if it was made possible by diving and yet we’ll all quickly jump on our opponents players and call cheat when the desicions go against us!

  38. [37. Brian B]
This is a very good and mature response. In your response, it shows that:
    1. You get what the article is about
    2. You don’t defend your players blindly
    3. You don’t defend your players by attacking other players
    4. You don’t defend your players by ‘inflating their images’
    5. Nowhere do you state that becuase of the ‘point’ that the article tries to make, that your player is now a better or worse player (talent wise that is). He is still the great player that you take him to be…right?
    6. Same as point 5 above ca be said of your team.

Sorry to use you like this, but, why couldn’t all Pool supporters get this? This is the only reason why I got sarcastic with my previous posts.

  39. Brian B I do not think that we are ALL happy to celebrate a “drity” victory. I would not do it. If Man Utd won a dirty penalty then I will not gloat it. I felt moderately bad about the game which ended Arsenal’s famous ubeated run. Rooney dived there.

Also UEFA is taking *some* action. They are penalizing players for dives after the match. They have done it against the lad from Lithuania and in Italy Adriano gets banned frequently (I think twice already). The Premier League should do something as well though.

Also, SG does dive, but he is not as bad as most of the players in the league. Is this acceptable? No. Is he reasonable? Yes. Football is going to hell, and it is doing so quickly. Some players (especially from the Premier League) and quite virtuous. Giggs, Beckham and to a certain exted Bergkamp come to mind, but I would struggle to find young ones who have the same ethic. From this point of view English players are turning in the Italian players most of us do not like for dives like Gilardino’s against Celtic (I cannot believe he was actually surprised to get booked!!).

In the end of the day it hurts to see of many of the players we respect do such a dirty thing. Kudos to Drogba for rectifying his attitude after the famous interview, he really has become respectable.

  40. October 24, 2007Liverpool_Fan

omg u guys r so stupid how many times did i say Gerrard dives fuck ur the ones that need to go to spec savers

  41. 2-1 Besiktas HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. October 25, 2007KingOfZamunda

Liverpool_Fan- let go of your cock and breathe, the implication is first and foremost that he is a hypocrite of the highest order, and beyond that, he gets away with his melodramatics for the fact that he is Stevie Gee? Sheesh- you one dumb bum.
Brian B- you sure you Scouse mate, awfully intelligent by the Liverpool standard…

  43. Liam I ould not get too cocky if I were you, Arsenal are playing Liverpool in two days’ time… should be entertaining, but I wil laugh if Arsenal win off a dive…

  44. October 25, 2007Liverpool_Fan

liam isnt an gooner? arsenal fans know a lot about the game and have good sportsmanship while man united fans are completely different.

  45. October 25, 2007Liverpool_Fan

dam we r out of the champions league already i know we r after the league but its a bit embarrising by our standards!!

  46. Liverpool_Fan, what standards? :-) :-) :-)
I thought the goal was 6-TIMES!!!

  47. October 25, 2007Liverpool_Fan

no its actually 19 times sorry to wake u up but we have way more than 5 league titles ;) sorry to have to bring u up to speed on all this

  48. October 25, 2007Liverpool_Fan

hey dont get too confident either after having a good rest on that result i relized the year we won the champions league we also lost 2 games.

Our next 2 champions league games are at anfield. the last game agaisnt marsielle is a toughy but so is barcelona, juventus, ac milan and chelsea arent they ;) as i said b4 why not go through in style?

  49. Im not so upset about Gerrard cheating but his comments on other players. I think attacking another player verbally is the worst thing any soccer player can do (besides from headbutting lol)

Gerrard seems like a nice guy but I can’t believe he brought others into this matter (especially when he does it himself). I know people aren’t perfect and always talk about other people but he did it publicly and many people will probably think bad of Carvalho and Ronaldo after reading his book.

  50. @ 45: aren’t those standards not wining the league in 17 years?

  51. October 26, 2007Liverpool_Fan

no those standards winning the champions league 5 times. Dont worry if Liverpool dont make it through this year Chelsea might actually get past the semis ;)

In Gerrards autobiography he treats every english play with great respect and all the foreign players the play for Liverpool or for a big team.

I dont think Gerrard likes the foreign players in the premiership he thinks they are ruining it by diving and ball hogging. i have to disagree with him there but

  52. [Liverpool_Fan]
Please don’t take this the wrong way. I’m just trying to help out a 16-year old…
You usually come accross as very intelligent. Anyone can see that you make an efort to do some research (a lot).
just one thing though… Learn to think before you act.
You react a lot to people (and quickly too) and therefore your thoughts are clouded with emotion. If you take the time to think things through a bit more thoroughly, you will make much more sense and achieve much more success in life.

There, that’s my good deed for the year :-)
