From Spain: Liverpool Set to Sign Seydou Keita on Free Transfer
Liverpool are set to sign Valencia midfielder Seydou Keita in the summer transfer window, reports the Spanish newspaper Superdeporte.
The 34-year-old joined the Spanish club on a six month deal from Chinese club Dalian Aerbin in January transfer window, with the move including a possibility of extending the contract this summer. He has made 18 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit.
Keita is a free agent in the summer and has not signed a contract extension. According to the report, the former Barcelona defensive midfielder has rejected the deal offered by Valencia.
In addition to this. the midfielder’s current employers are reluctant in improving the offer and have asked Keita to either take it or leave it.
The situation with the Spanish club means the Merseyside club could land him for nothing in the upcoming transfer window. The Mali international is eyeing to feature in the Champions League and Valencia will not be in the Europe’s top club competition.
It was believed that Brendan Rodgers wanted to bring in Keita in January while he was with the Chinese club. The defensive midfielder rejected a chance to make a switch to Anfield as the Reds were not featuring in the European competition.
Liverpool finished second in the league table and will return to the Champions League after a few years of absence.
Any move from Liverpool for Keita will see them face a tough battle from AC Milan, who are also interested in the player’s signature. However, the Champions League action could tempt the former Barcelona man to reject the chance to join the Italian club.
Should Keita join Liverpool, his addition to the squad will give Rodgers more options during the team selection. The addition of Keita will give the former Swansea boss more experience during the European nights as he has featured in the competition with Barcelona.
