South Africa 1-1 Mexico
FIFA 2010 World Cup
11 June 2010

South Africa would be denied an opening match victory by the post.

It was a match largely dominated by Mexico but South Africa would be the team to strike first in the match. It was a scoreless first 45 minutes even though Mexico would have several chances. Fortunately for South Africa, the Mexicans could not convert in the first half and it remained 0-0 going into the second half.

The host nation would take the lead in the 55th minute as Siphiwe Tshabalala got behind the Mexican defense and scored on a great shot to the upper corner. Mexico were caught as they pushed forward but would tie the match about 15 minutes later. A corner kick in the 79th minute was initially cleared by South Africa but Mexico retained possession. Mexico had several players in the box from the corner and Guardado would send a cross in the box. Rafa Marquez was on the far post to collect the ball and beat the goalkeeper with the defense a step behind.

The final 10-15 minutes saw both teams get chances but the best was for the South Africans. Katlego Mphela would send a shot towards goal which beat the goalkeeper but hit off the side post. It would have given the home side a win but it was not meant to be. Mexico would not have too many chances late despite having much more possession.

The draw has both teams in decent shape as the major thing is to not lose the opening group stage match.
