Redknapp to raid former club for English duo in January
According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham are planning a January raid of crisis club West Ham, with a £16m double deal for goalkeeper Robert Green and defender Matthew Upson in the cards.
The Hammers are struggling on the pitch, with only one in their last 10 Premier League games, and they’re also in the mire financially. Manager Gianfranco Zola has said he won’t sell off key players in January, but if he wants to add to the squad in January, certain moves might be necessary.
Gomes did post a clean sheet in Monday’s 2-0 win at West Ham, but he’s had his share of struggles in his first few months in England, and Harry Redknapp could be looking to bring in someone who could provide the Brazilian with some competition, at the very least.
Green is on the fringes of the England national team, and if he could usurp Gomes as the #1 at Spurs, he could really improve his prospects for regular consideration by Fabio Capello.
Upson would be a big addition to a defense that has been fairly solid since Redknapp’s arrival, but could use some depth. Ledley King did score on Monday, but his knee is still a major concern, and there’s no telling when he could go down again.
Upson has recently re-established himself in England’s starting lineup, and he netted the opener in the win over Germany last month. The Mail have Upson’s value at £10m, and an offer of that much would allow West Ham to make a profit on their £6m purchase of the former Arsenal and Birmingham man in January 2007.
Those two might not be the only Hammers that are linked with Tottenham in the coming weeks. Given that Spurs are also in need of a new striker, and Craig Bellamy may well be available…

Why do people keep knocking Gomes?
Sure he’s made a few blunders….but when you’ve got a whole team playing crap…it’s difficult for any single player to perform.
Having said that – he’s also made some amazing saves which people don’t seem to mention.
I think he’s a top keeper.
Robert Green??? Please not – This guy is terrible. Everytime I’ve seen him he plays rubbish. I would put Green in the same fold as Robinson….definitely no thanks.
December 10th, 2008 @ 20:13Mark, I agree that Gomes is a good keeper and that his bad start had alot to do with the whole team playing crap. Although we do need a second keeper and if we can get Green who to me has the ability to become a fantastic keeper well that could only help Gomes pull his socks up and any compatition like that is always good for the team.
