Official: Liverpool Sign Joe Cole On A Four-Year Deal

Liverpool have confirmed, via their official website (which has now crashed), that free-agent Joe Cole has signed for the club on a four-year deal following his release from Chelsea.

The England winger’s move to Anfield is now only subject to a routine medical that will be undertaken either later today or first thing tomorrow morning.

A short statement was issued by Liverpool to confirm the news;

“Liverpool  FC are delighted to confirm the signing of Joe Cole on a four-year deal.

The England midfielder has agreed personal terms with the Reds and will undergo a medical in the next 48 hours.”

What a difference a signing makes!

After a season of fruitless toil and rising board-room acrimony, the majority of Liverpool fans were nursing a particularly lumpen hangover coming into the build up for the next Premier League campaign, but today’s acquisition of Joe Cole seems to have gone a long way in restoring the eternal (and, let’s be fair, often misplaced) optimism of the Anfield faithful – and with good, if not slightly short-sighted reason.

Cole is exactly the kind of player that Liverpool need if they are to realistically live up their lofty reputation.

He will add adventure, creativity and, most importantly, a goal-threat in a midfield (especially from the flanks) that has singularly struggled to provide any such accoutrements over the last season or two.

Although it’s hard to argue that the signing of a player of Cole’s exhuberant technical ability could ever be a negative thing, it’s equally hard to argue that the signing of one man could reverse the ailing fortunes of one of European football’s most prominent ‘fallen giants’ – but it’s a damn good start.
