Newcastle Should Not Buy Gravesen

Seriously now, why would Newcastle United want a bossy, slightly deranged, ageing midfielder in their squad?

Gravesen’s claim to fame is that he was surprisingly bought by Real Madrid who thought that bringing in an unglamourous, tough midfielder into the squad would deflect criticism and bring some steel to the side.

Like most of Real Madrid’s signings in the last three years, Gravesen was a mistake, and Baptista’s signing in the summer proved as much. Gravesen was reduced to 7 starts for the 2005/2006 season, and he has failed to settle into the squad or in the culture.

And now, after being told that he is surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, the Dane is looking for a club in the Premiership, with Newcastle rumoured to be in the front of the queue. Truth be told, they would be better served going for a younger player with more experience in the Premiership - say, Darren Fletcher or Liam Miller :)

I’m not joking either. Fletcher and Miller may be absolutely rubbish, but they would be better bets compared to Gravesen. Of course, it comes down to what Newcastle United consider as quality, and now the question is whether Newcastle and Roeder can build on their success of signing Duff cheaply.

Why on earth are we after another midfielder when clearly we require strikers. We’ve already got Butt, Parker, Emre and Faye in the centre. There’s even talk of offloading Faye and then bringing in Gravesen. I don’t see any point in this getting rid of one midfielder and bringing in another who is almost identical in terms of attributes and playing position.

  2. Why are you so obsessed with Newcastle?

I have to disagree here. Well, in part at least. Ok, Gravesen’s signing was a mistake (though to make a direct comparison between Gravesen and Baptista is a grave blunder), but to then go on and compare him to Fletcher and even Liam Miller…that is verging on criminal. The fact is that Gravesen was Everton’s most influential player for a significant period of time, and could certainly still do a job in the Premiership. Newcastle cannot rely on Scott Parker staying injury-free, and Gravesen could add some much-needed heart and tenacity to the squad, as well as creativity. If Nicky Butt has a future at Newcastle United Football Club, I would dare to say that Gravesen has the credentials to make his mark.

  4. so what was it? the dig about fletcher and miller, or the fact that i’m telling you your transfer target is not worth your time or money?

no good deed ever goes unpunished, eh? :)

  5. hugo - all that is fine, but newcastle is a club looking to break into the top 4, correct?

so how does buying Gravesen help them? It’s a temp solution, like Utd going after Senna. In both cases, there are better options.

  6. Gravesen makes perfect sense because Butt and Faye would have to be sold. The two of them amount to the dog poop on my shoe that I stepped in earlier. Plus, their wages are no doubt inflated given that they’re at NUFC. Drop those two, pick up Gravesen, and save some money.

And gain a player who busts his ass, even if he is deranged.

  7. actually newcasle should put the formation like tis-
    Given
    ramage——bramble——–?????——–David edgar
    gravesen

    solano—— —– scott parker———-emre

    owen————dyer

so that parker can concentrate on attack!

  8. If I were a coach i would definitely want gravesen in my side; sometimes you need a player like that(strong, unglamorous, bossy and wreckless)to do all the dirty work in midfield even tough he can be expelled. But I consider him as an EPL player bcause of the physical that football is there compared to other countries like Spain or Italy

  9. Do people realise that Gravesen isn’t primarily a scrapper or a defensive mid? Hes actually more of a playmaker despite his deceptive appearance, and I think he could do a good job for alot of teams in the premiership.
