Mourinho’s axe hangs over Chelsea squad as summer approaches

The revolving door at the exit of Stamford Bridge could be spinning pretty regularly this summer if Jose Mourinho goes ahead with a drastic overhaul of his squad, which could mean up to a dozen players leaving the club.

At the top of the list to head out the door is the misfiring trio of strikers, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o. Although Eto’o has netted eleven times this season, making him easily the most prolific of the three, it’s unlikely the club will extend his stay. Mourinho appears to have lost patience with the other two, and their departures seems inevitable.

Another high profile name thought to be on the way out is Brazil’s David Luiz. Never Mourinho’s idea of the archetypal defender, Luiz’s season has been plagued by injuries, but even when given first team opportunities, this has often been as a holding midfield player rather than in his preferred centre back position.

The manager’s decision to substitute him at half-time from the midfield role against Fulham on Saturday spoke volumes for how Mourinho views the player. With talk of bids expected from PSG – where he could team up with international centre back partner Thiago Silva – and Barcelona, Chelsea would be looking to accumulate the kind of transfer fee for Luiz that would allow Mourinho to pursue Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid.

Nigerian John Obi Mikel has been very much a bit part player this season, and has seen his chances diminished even further since the arrival of £21million signing Nemanja Matic, resulting in just a few cameo substitute appearances.

Other players potentially on the way out are back up goalkeepers Hilario and Schwarzer. Mourinho is keen to bring Belgium international Thibaut Courtois back to the club from exile in Spain to compete with Petr Cech for the first team spot, which means at least one of the other two will be allowed to leave.

Many of the clubs loan players may also not return as permanent deals are sought for them. These include youngsters that promised, but never fulfilled such as Josh McEachran and Gael Kakuta, whilst Romelu Lukaku is thought to have an uneasy relationship with Mourinho and the club may well also seek to parcel him out as well.

Others, such as Ryan Bertrand at Aston Villa and Victor Moses at Liverpool, have been deemed surplus to requirements.

Mourinho is keen that the coming summer will allow him to shape the squad how he wants with a determined attempt to regain the league title in mind. The restrictions of FFP however preclude any mass buying activity without the ditching of other players.

It could be a busy summer down at the Bridge.

Football is a game of passions and opinions. If you’re a fan, it’s both your boon and your bane; the drug that you simply cannot live without. Your team will break your heart, make you despair and swear that you’ll give them up. Like some lovestruck fool ensnared by a femme fatale however, you’ll be back again next week. You know it. They know it. Just accept it and embrace it. The lows are bad, but oh, those highs….. Now in my sixth decade, I’ve been a football fan for over fifty years and a Chelsea fan for every one of them. I hold FA Coaching badges and have been a member of the FA Coaches Association for over 15 years, working with numerous teams of varying age and ability levels; it’s the next best thing to playing. That said, I still regularly don the guise of the ‘Panther’, and keep goal for our company team. I’ve written a number of articles focusing on Spanish Football for a different website, and welcome this opportunity to “call it as I see it, without fear or favour” about our game. As I said, football is a game of passions and opinions, so agree or disagree with what I write as you see fit, I’ll passionately tell you my opinion, you tell me yours. 1. Mourihno must think twice before overhaul players, I think its good to release Ba, Torres, Cole, a big question is to release Mikel, Luiz, bcoz Matic is Lazy and wrong passes, its good to bring back Lukaku, then to buy Costa only, these 2 strikers can perform well up front

    • I think its good to release Ba, Torres, Cole, kakuta,Josh,Etoo, Hilario,Schwarzer and bring back Lukaku, then to buy Costa only.replace the rest with players from the academy.

  2. oooh patrick i really support ur idea fr mourinho mistakenly selling mikel n luiz.the arrival of matic reduces the chances of mikel justifying his quality.i tink is high tym mourinho seat down matic for a while jxt to let mikel to display his skills coz dis guy hanging on ball nw adays is nt fair, his passes neva goes true nd i tink he is tired.

  3. We nid Marcelo in d LB.
    Courtois as d G.K
    Firminho in d CAM
D.costa plus Hulk or Cavani plus Hulk wud b d perfect CF 4 cfc.

Cal bk Wallace 2 alwys start as a Sub.

  4. Hmmm…..nat in-need of mikel aqain..,we still ve van-qikel…xo,0ffl0ad torres,ba,en wasteful players en use lukaku as deal for barkley…ah vink we sud pursue jarckson martinex instead 0f c0sta…

    • Let the truth be told, Lampard is old, Ramirez is box to box, Mikel is better than Van-gikel and Matic, sentiments aside. Mourinho should sell wisely

  5. Mourinho sud buy world class players as we av it in man city.players like, pedro, lavezzi, coasta, nasri, yaya toure, possibly, silva equivalence, angel dimaria, guarin, barkley,.we can win all laurels if we can get d equivalence of these players.chelsea sud also offload all d loan players if they ar not relivant to d club’s programme.long live chelsea!coach olayinka

  6. Let it be known to mourinho that chelsea need energetic and mobile defensive midfielder like yaya toure.then creative playmaker like david silva, complete and perfect striker like luiz suarez.we need wingers that can break any defence with their dribbling skills and speed.aside hazard in chelsea, no any other mielfielder that can break a formidable defence in our team.chelsea needs total olayinka, university of ilorin, nigeria.

  7. I think it is not wise to sell lukaku since we are offloading all three strikers. Costa should be bought and luke shaw should replace cole if he leaves!

  8. We need a clear out but be carefull players like luiz only come along once every 20 years.
