Manchester United Champions League play-offs possible opponents revealed

Manchester United still have to feature in play-offs and based on the result, they will make it to the group stages of the Champions League.

After finishing fourth in Louis van Gaal’s debut season, the Red Devils have a chance to make it to the group stages of the Europe’s elite club competition after a year’s absence. They finished seventh in the 2013-14 season, following a dismal season under David Moyes.

The draw for play-offs will be held at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday morning at 11am BST. United’s opposition will be decided in less than 24 hours and the first leg will be played on 18/19 August, while the return leg will be played on 25/26 August.

After the latest round of fixtures, United’s potential opponents could be Club Brugge, CSKA Moscow, Lazio, Monaco or Rapid Vienna.

The Belgium Pro-League runners up sealed a 5-1 aggregate victory over Panathinaikos in the third round of the qualifiers, which has kept their hope of making it to the group stages alive. CSKA Moscow defeated Sparta Prague 5-4 on aggregate.

Monaco progressed after a crushing scoreline of 7-1 from both legs against Young Boys. Rapid Vienna, on the other hand were the giant killers as they knocked the Dutch giants Ajax out of the competition.

United, along with Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen, Portuguese club Sporting, La Liga side Valencia and Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk have been placed in seeded pot. These five teams will face the other five teams placed in the Useeded pot.
