Manchester United – 2 Steps Away From “Totally Fucked”

I am sorely tempted to write a rose-tinted article exhorting the virtues of the current Manchester United squad and boasting how, if fit, we can beat any team in front of us, be it Madrid, Barca, Milan, Bayern or Chelsea.

Unfortunately I don’t do biased bullshit very well. Considering what it does for revving up your side’s fans, it’s a skill worth learning.

But until then, here’s an unbiased, no-holds-barred look at where Manchester United stand on July 27, 2006.

Whisper it, but we’re a couple of steps away from being totally fucked.

One star striker is in the middle of serialising his ghost-written autobiography (and in the process, is showing us what sort of a person he is – more on Wayne Rooney in a future post), the other is being pawned off to the highest bidder (and considering what Ferguson said on MUTV last night, both Madrid and Munich have some way to go before they match United’s valuation for Ruud van Nistelrooy).

When (and not if) Ruud goes and when (again, not if) United starts the new season with a strike force of Rooney, Saha, Solskjaer, Rossi and Smith, we will be walking a fine line between madness and brilliance. Injuries will kill off our season but if these players stay fit they have the potential to lead Manchester United into a strong challenge for the Premiership title and in Europe.

Our defence is stronger this year thanks to players like Gerard Pique, Phil Bardsley and Jonathan Evans coming through the ranks. We don’t lack cover over the right-back position as both O’Shea and Phil Bardsley can play there (plus Wes Brown can depute if necessary. Last season was not completely injury free and if Heinze can stay fit, Manchester United will have the luxury of leaving Silvestre on the bench and hopefully we’ll see better crosses from the Argentine. He’s not a perfect fit though – his defending at corners and against high balls is woeful.

Kuszczack who? With the talents of Ben Foster at our disposal, we don’t need no Poles. What we do need to figure out though, is how to replace van der Sar when he retires. His contract extension takes him to 2007/2008, but after that we need a young keeper to see us through for the next 5-6 years (a la Chelsea and Tottenham).

Instead of telling you what a bad state our midfield is in, I’ll just list the midfielders from the first-team squad for you:

Giggs, Ronaldo, Park, Richardson, Scholes, Smith, Fletcher, Miller, David Jones, O’Shea.

Of these, O’Shea will go back into defensive duties. That leaves us with a first-choice central midfield of either Fletcher-Scholes or Smith-Scholes. The later would do in a pinch, but the former is unthinkable for next season. We said it last year as well, that Ferguson should have bought a central midfielder instead of Park (who still has to get over his fear of hitting the target), and his decision came to haunt us last season when we fell short of Chelsea.

Manchester United, contrary to popular opinion, has followed a very limited number of targets this summer (Torres and Mascherano are not in that list). Carrick, Vieira and Gattuso are on the list, which shows to me that United are looking for one big midfield buy (hence the slow and deliberate actions of the club in the transfer market. One must not forget Diarra and Hargreaves – both would prove to be expensive but in a pinch, United could come up with the 15-20 mil demanded for either player. Both have a considerable advantage over Carrick – they are hard-tackling players and United lack a talented holding midfielder.

Carrick’s strengths lie in passing and creative play (which Hargreaves manages well). He’s got real talent, but has limitations to his game that will be exposed cruelly at Old Trafford, especially if he’s the only summer signing we make.

Ferguson’s statement about the current squad being good enough for next season is a smokescreen – he’s playing the diplomatic card but he also knows that United have at least 1-2 players lined up to play in the midfield. It’s a risky assumption (and I’m going on a limb here), but things will change drastically over the next month and while we wont be bringing in Torres and Gattuso and Riquelme, we could be bringing in two new midfielders (one with graft, one with class) to support Scholes, Ronaldo and Giggs.

We still have a little over two weeks before the season opener against Seville, and we play Fulham on the 20th for our first Premiership game. Officially, I won’t panic even if we start with Miller and Fletcher in the middle of the park (and considering the potential lynching Ferguson will get, I don’t think I’ll need to say much). Unofficially though, I’ll wait till August 12 before I start screaming at Ferguson.

The bottom line is that a second-place finish next season will not be acceptable for the players or the supporters. If Ferguson does not sign at least one (and preferably two) midfielders, and if we are hit by injuries again this season, we will be, for lack of a better expression, fucked.

For those Manchester United fans who are going to flame me, RTFA and then read this post as well:

    http://soccerlens.com/a-plea-to-manchester-united-fans/1226345.html.

Yes, it’s a measure of our success that we don’t accept failure in any form, but why should any team accept being second best?

I love Manchester United, no two thoughts about it. But I also consider two 3rd place finishes and a 2nd place finish in three years to be a failure. If you don’t, then we evaluate success differently. It doesn’t change the fact that we’re fans.

If Ben Foster keeps it up, I can’t see why he can’t be Van Der Sar’s long term replacement, he’s still young and keepers don’t hit their peak til much later in the game.

Your blog is called ‘soccerlens’, not ‘manunitedlens’, so think about that before you called other sites biased bullshit.

Premier League champion is of little hope unless Chelsea do a flop themselves.

But if the target is runner-up then I comfortably believe we can do it even if Ruud goes and Carrick/Sinnea is the only signing in the summer.

If the bottom-line is just front forth in the league then we can do it with the current squad w/o Ruud in it.

Be optimist, guys. Support and have faith in our current players and particularly the youngsters.

    george – you are correct.

    Chris – totally right.

ArseBlogger – Nice to see you here again. Please notice that I did not call arseblog ‘biased’ (that was for chelseablog.com – and if you remember one of my earlier rants it is a dig against one of their writers in particular). Still, as a friend of mine puts it, a blogger (you) who calls everyone who is not a diehard Arsenal supporter a cunt isn’t exactly unbiased. The label might apply to you, I dunno, I thought it was too obvious.

I’m sure the ‘cunt-angle’ fits in with the personality of your blog – if that is so, then I hope that you take my comment in stride.

Soccerlens is guilty of playing favorites, but I’m working on changing that.

Haha, arseblogger, you’ve GOT to admit it’s hard – I read arseblog on the recommendation of a diehard Arsenal fan. It’s biased beyond belief, imho. At least Ahmed’s not calling Arsenal cunts every chance he gets, or Sol Campbell (on leaving) or Ashely Cole (deservedly) or ANY Barcelona player including Ronaldhino, who didn’t do a THING against you in the Champions League final except being on the opposite team!

Defend your players, fine. Support your club and be more than a little optimistic on them, I can understand. But then call yourself unbiased? :O Nah man. 9 times out of 10, when I read about Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool on this blog, it’s news and usually biased towards the club!

And oh, well. Good post Ahmed. Hard to be optimistic on this front, but honest enough post all the same.

Yeah, you’re spot on, other than the fact that united have been fucked for some time. This has nothing to do with the Chelsea/Arsenal blogs. It’s because your manager has lost it and his signings are poor. Third place at best and that’s if Liverpool underperform

No, I got the bullshit bit. Cheers!

And of course I’m biased, Hasan and Ahmed. I’m an Arsenal fan who writes a blog about Arsenal. How could I not be biased?

My point was that you cannot expect a fan of his own team not to be biased. There’s no reason to slag somebody off about it.

If you read long enough you’ll see there’s a fair bit of perspective which normally centres around the things my team needs to work on rather than how great other teams are.

or ANY Barcelona player including Ronaldhino, who didn’t do a THING against you in the Champions League final except being on the opposite team!

Yeah, but can’t you understand how that makes them cunts? Can’t you?!!

    lol

good to see that you take constructive criticism so well :P

Bias is what allows you to call Barcelona players cunts, and bias is what let’s me call other bloggers full of biased bullshit.

    To each his own :)

Someone (who, where, I don’t remember) said that Kuszczack was a far better keeper than Ben Foster.

I don’t doubt that statement, but I wonder what would be better for Manchester United – to groom a young keeper (who had a stellar season with Watford, has benefited from the pre-season and his exposure to the World Cup squad as well) who is already at Old Trafford or to pay over 4 mil (plus a player) for a keeper from a relegated club who is being pimped for more than his worth?

Shades of Paul Robinson maybe, but if you have Ben Foster in your side you don’t need a Paul Robinson of 2-3 years ago.

Of course, if someone was to say that we should get Buffon, I’d totally agree…

If we can get Kuszczack, that’s great, but like Ferguson said we need to concentrate on the midfield.

i think man united fans are finally beggining to see what fans of other clubs have seen for a good 3 seasons or so, the club is on a downslope. it happens to every team(see leeds), and you just have to ride it out (or sack fergie and remove glazer). to be honest many of your players wouldnt shine in a mid table team. it is unrealistic to expect the current crop of players to be winning the title every season because they just dont have the talent (bar shrek and 1 trick pony.) the good thing for united is they will come back and win titles once roman leaves chelski, because they have the fan base and the cash (once arsenal are out of the wenger period they will go back to challenging for the uefa cup).
as for signings i dont think carrick has the attributes to replace keane, he more reminds me of our own xabi alonso, he creates and has a good range of passing, but isnt so good at defending. not sure about 18 million for him like. i beleive you need another winger and another striker. this is how i expect the table to be at the end of the season
    1.chelsea
    2.liverpool
    3.manchester united.
    4.spurs.
5.arsenal (they lost pires, campbell and bergkamp and havnt replaced them)

anyway even though im a liverpool fan id be happy if you stopped chelski winning the premiership and i think any fan of football would say the same
