Man United exec Gill confirms Real Madrid target Vidic to pen new deal

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has confirmed that center back Nemanja Vidic will put pen-to-paper on a contract extension once he returns from his holiday, according to Manchester United’s official site.

Earlier today, it was reported that Vidic had been offered a two-year contract extension worth £90k per week, a raise of £20k per week over his current salary of £70k per week.

Gill has confirmed that not only were discussions started before the World Cup and resumed after Serbia’s elimination in the group stage, but that Vidic verbally agreed to a new deal several weeks ago and that the deal should become official early next month.

“We sat down with Nemanja and his advisor at the end of last season and started discussions. They broke up when Nemanja went away to the World Cup, but resumed when Serbia were knocked out and I’m very pleased to confirm that we agreed terms with Nemanja three or four weeks ago on a new long-term deal with the club.

“It’s yet to be signed – the paperwork is now being sorted by our lawyers and being checked by Nemanja’s advisors. He’s still away on holiday but the plan is that when he gets back the papers will be signed.

We’ve shaken hands on it and we’re confident it will all be signed and sealed in early August.

“It’s great news for Manchester United and great news for Nemanja and the fans.”

This new deal should end any speculation about a move away from Old Trafford, as the 28-year-old had been linked with Real Madrid throughout the summer.

United bought Vidic from Spartak Moscow in a £7m deal in January 2006, and the Serbia international has been a stalwart at the back for United, making nearly 200 appearances in four and a half seasons and scoring 13 goals.
