Louis Van Gaal plays down Manchester United’s title challenge

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal played down his side’s Premier League title talk after watching the Red Devils drop two crucial points against ten men Aston Villa on Saturday. United came at Villa Park at the back of six consecutive wins but failed to take advantage even when Villa were reduced to ten men after Gabriel Agbonlahor was sent off.

Van Gaal claimed, “We dropped two points but were the better team. That’s frustrating when you’re better and you don’t win. When you want to be a part of the title race, you have to win these games.”

Christian Benteke gave Paul Lambert’s side the lead with a fantastic strike before Radamel Falcao restored parity in the second half as United looked to go for the kill.“I think also that we were not so aggressive in first half as we are usual, we kept the ball much better, but we didn’t create so much because we were not looking to the forwards. That’s why I changed Darren Fletcher for Michael Carrick, because I know he’s more a passer to the forwards.”

Whwn asked if the Old Trafford side could challenge for the title, Van Gaal said, “No. You have seen you have to win these matches. We didn’t win. But it is still a long time to go. Chelsea have to go to Stoke. It’s not easy.”

Radamel Falcao go one of his rare starts for United but the manager said that the goal wouldn’t guarantee a starting spot always, “It was a beautiful goal. I liked him today. I’m very happy for him. And I am always happy when United scores. I have to compare every week. There’s always a question, for every player, not only Falcao”
