Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has advised Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal to sign a forward in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils had Radamel Falcao – who was on loan from AS Monaco – Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and James Wilson as the four first choice strikers in the squad last season.

Van Gaal decides against signing Falcao on a permanent transfer, who joined Chelsea on a season-loan earlier this summer. The former Arsenal striker was allowed to leave Old Trafford as he completed his transfer to Turkish outfit Fenerbahce.

Javier Hernandez has returned from his loan spell at Real Madrid and the Mexican international’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain. Cascarino says United needs to bolster their attacking division for the new season.

“Their midfield has been bolstered (by the signings of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin),” Cascarino told Sky Sports.

“But if you think they will have lost [Angel] Di Maria (who is expected to complete his move to Paris Saint-Germain), Falcao and Van Persie, that’s a huge loss to Man United.

“They must find replacements. If they lose Wayne Rooney (to injury), they’ve got a problem,” he added.

Arsenal sealed a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the 2015 Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal was the difference between the two London rivals.

Despite their victory, Cascarino believes Arsenal still need to complete a centre-back signing this summer.

“Another defender at the heart of their backline would be a massive statement for Arsenal. But they’re a much better side than the one we’ve seen in the last couple of years. They look ready to challenge now,” he added.
