Information you gave about Catania-Palermo are totally wrong!!!!
Filippo Raciti died for a wound in the stomach caused by a hit. Investigations are still running to discover the thruth.
It`s not clear if the policeman was crashed by mistake by a Police van trying to sedate a riot.

Poor article in my humble opinion. I don’t know what the author expects to achieve. Is he trying to romanticise it or explain it. It does well on the former despite being innacurate largely, and it does poorly on the latter

The author talks about his reasons for why hooliganism exists but they are poor, if a little more research was done or even a good base knowledge of football pre premiership, the author would have a better idea. In England at least.

the mention of football specials is too brief, and the dismissiveness of pre 60s hooliganism is brief, and if weren’t dismissed would help the explaination. No talk about the rise in disposable income or the birth of the teenager. All large factors.

you mention recent riots and fail to talk about the arsenal/galatasaray incident, which was beamed live around the world, although not inside the stadium.

You choose the zurich derby from switzerland but neglect the Basel/Zurich game. and your research is heavily modern based.

How the hell can you leave out the 1909 scottish cup final which is expunged from the record books because it had to be abondoned

    or the

1980 SFA cup final between rangers and celtic. the match that resulted in alcohol being banned from scottish grounds

This is an moderately researched article, but the problem is when researching something if you don’t have a good base knowledge of the topic you leave yourself open to making mistakes and missing things, which unfortunately this article has done. It is not that the article is bad, it is that what it claims to be is what it is not.

    @Michael
Well said. I think it’s a topic that can’t be explained in a single article or summarized in a top ten list type format. I think the author has good intentions of bringing this topic to light (not that it’s a topic that is forgotten or missed by many). It’s just too much with too little space in my opinion. With one exception, it also seems very Euro-centric when there have been riots and other disorderly situations that arise (Argentina seems to have some sort of incident on a weekly basis) around the world. I second some of the incidents that Michael pointed out such as the 2000 UEFA Cup final between Arsenal and Galatsaray that made a peaceful and tranquil Copenhagen into an all out war zone that looked more like something in Call of Duty 4.

Well, not knowing much about football violence myself, I think this article is a valiant effort to undertake a daunting task, regardless of information accuracy.

  5. The listing of the Ten Worst Football Riots is the usual Eurocentric garbage. I guess the 300 people killed in Lima in 1964 in the riot and panic during an Argentina-Peru qualifying match don’t make the list because they weren’t Europeans.

I think that, as the article states, the hooligans feed off the publicity and that the media should try wherever possible to ignore the behaviour of what is now a very small minority (at least within the ground). I’m not saying we should ignore it, just stop glamourising it and giving it airtime.

If and when it does happen on TV then they should either talk about it but not show the pictures, or zoom in on the individuals and use this as evidence in any prosecution.

I have experienced very poor policing in Italy twice. I cannot believe how they allow large groups to form and dominate them and how they indiscriminately hit anyone in a trouble zone. I also witnessed the bizarre spectacle at an international match of Italian fans rioting amongst themselves. I think it will take some serious effort to sort out their current problems.

I have to say that the Police at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome were a disgrace, they were all stationed on the Manchester United fans side of the glass, while Roma fans taunted in safety, United fans were being beaten to a pulp with police batons.

  8. At the game in Zurich, which was actually 2007, almost nothing happend. The heavy stuff was 2006 when FC Zurich secured the title in the 93rd minute at Basle and supportes from the home team stormed on the pitch.

  9. wheres Manutd Vs Rome

  10. just to point something out about your report of the birmingham v leeds riot although it has been widely reported as the leeds riot it was actually birmingham that was ripping thier own seats out and attacking the police for well over an hour after the leeds fans had stopped doing anything.
