CONCACAF’s Biggest Football Rivalries

Major club football rivalries from North America, Central America and the Carribean:

Featured Derby: El Clasico, Mexico
Club America vs Chivas

The El Clasico is the largest rivalry in Mexico. Representing the two largest cities in Mexico, Club America  (Mexico City) and Chivas (Guadalajara) are the most successful clubs in Mexico. The El Clasico has been contested 202 times, with Club America currently holding the advantage, 73 wins to 64. An interesting contrast between the clubs is that Chivas have a tradition of fielding Mexican born players, whilst Club America tend to favour famous foreign imports.

Has to be Mexico: Club America vs Chivas. Hot chillies, cold beer and a cracking atmosphere!

Agreed, not sure any of the American games have got the tradition behind them as yet. They are all manufactured match ups!

there’s more chance of an east-west rivalry in US football than there is of a local derby.

I’ve been to new York vs. DC and that game is awesome in both places. It’s a battle in the stands as well as the field and the proximity of the two stadiums make it accesible for fans of either team.

I am a supporter of LA Galaxy and I appreciate the recognition of our local city and state derbies. Despite this, I have to mention the fact that this list neglects Atlas v. Chivas and America v. UNAM

San Jose v. Galaxy gets my vote for MLS’ worst rivalry. It actually started in 1974 when San Jose Earthquakes and LA Aztecs use to do battle.

There’s a lot of animosity between us and the LA supporters. Thankfully it doesn’t go over the top.
