England vs Jamaica – Preview

When England take on Jamaica at Old Trafford today, Eriksson has one last shot at tinkering with the formations and finding out what his backup plans are in case things go south at the World Cup.

One good news is that of the original plan, one dear Wayne Rooney. Apparently, boy wonder has been running and kicking balls – a feat that took top spot in the news yesterday, ahead of Obi Mikel’s 16 mil signing by Chelsea and David Dein’s vote-off from the FA board.

England are set to revert to a 4-4-2 formation today, with Peter Crouch taking up a place alongside Owen up front.

Peter Crouch - smiling

Would you bet on this man scoring the winning goals for England?

Crouch’s robot dance apart, the man is a decent target man and a good foil for Micheal Owen, supposing that Mr. Owen is fit enough to play. The thing is that everyone is expecting Owen to play in all matches as long as he is fit, regardless of his form. This makes it a problem for players like Defoe and Walcott, who are good but need a lot more time on the pitch.

Other than that, Carragher will fill in for Neville at right-back, and Lamps and Gerrard will take center-stage. I don’t see the point of that happening, as Carrick deserves another game, and Gerrard has already proven he can hack at. Lampard and Carrick in the center would also let us see how well Lampard goes forward.

I’m expecting Lennon and Downing to come in after half-time, although for me Defoe and Walcott should be playing this match instead of Crouch.

More after the match – including England’s plans for the World Cup and a full match report.
