Chelsea: £22m midfield maestro will undergo medical
Chelsea are all set to re-sign Nemanja Matic from Benfica for an eye-catching fee of around £22m, according to reports from The Guardian.
The Blues sold the player three years ago in a part exchange deal that saw David Luiz coming to Stamford Bridge, and now they are on the verge of re-signing their former midfielder, who has had a phenomenal season for Benfica thus far.
Matic is expected to undertake a medical while the 25-year-old would sign a three-year contract. When Matic was sold to Benfica, his market valuation was around £3m only – the vast difference will be partly offset the sale of Kevin De Bruyne, who is expected to join Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg for around £18m.
De Bruyne will undergo a medical in Germany on Tuesday and will sign a long term contract that will keep him at the club till 2019. The Belgian was signed from Genk for a reported fee of £6.7m and has managed only two Premier League starts under Jose Mourinho this season.
The Serbian midfielder, Matic, rapidly developed into a fine midfielder after leaving Chelsea and became a key member of Jorge Jesus’s side. He can play as a central midfielder or as a defensive midfielder as well.
Central midfield is one area where the Blues need reinforcement. With Frank Lampard reaching the apogee of his career, Micahel Essien not the same force any more, a player of Matic’s caliber would definitely improve the side.
