Portuguese Primeira Liga champions Benfica are continuing their pursuit of Arsenal striker Joel Campbell, according to reports.

With reports that the Gunners are set to take Danny Welbeck from fellow Premier League side Manchester United, the Portuguese giants are hoping they can get the Costa Rican striker.

Portuguese outlet DN Desporto is reporting the news that Benfica want to bring Campbell to the Stadium of Light.

The 22-year old made his Premier League debut for the Gunners in their 2-2 draw with Everton in matchday 2.  He came on as a substitute for the final 18 minutes.

Joel Campell also got a 4-minute run out in Arsenal’s 3-0 FA Community Shield victory over Manchester City at the start of August.

He has spent three seasons loaned out from Arsenal in France, Spain and Greece with Lorient, Real Betis and Olympiacos respective.

His performances with the Greek Super League champions and in the 2014 World Cup earned him rave reviews and was expected to be part of the Arsenal first-team this summer.

With the impending arrival of Danny Welbeck, Campbell could be further demoted at the Emirates Stadium and subsequently loaned out.

  1. That is because they see the huge potential that Joel has, unlike Wenger who can’t be bothered to play him.
