Beckham fiasco launches upcoming MLS season
Beckham overshadows national team 2-0 defeat of Mexico, World Cup bid, new women’s league, Drew Carey’s Seattle Sounders
Although the shrill cry of flocking football pundits proclaim that on March 9, David Beckham will be in Milan — no, LA! — wait for the volley . . . no, Milan! — the only certainty is David Beckham will enjoy himself wherever he goes. So we can all sleep well.
Except perhaps, Bruce Arena, who was building a team around Beckham and Landon Donovan (who scurried off to Bayern Munich for the winter) and now he could be building a team around . . . rookie Sean Franklin? Fine, throw in Edson Buddle and Chris Klein. Winning was never an issue – the Galaxy sold out stadiums all season while clinging to the bottom of the table with league high goals scored (55) and allowed (62).
But Bruce can probably sleep soundly. The last word from Galaxy boss Tim Leiweke was Milan’s $7.7 million (6m euros) offer fell short and Milan had to go to their room and stay there. “They’ve never been in the ballpark,” Leiweke told the LA Times. “They’ll come back, Sure they will. But we owe it our fans [not to consider it].” All the clubs, not just the Galaxy, entice fans to buy season tickets with the Beckham lure, so although the potential cost extends to lofty reaches of pride and credibility (isn’t that why he’s here?) it also chisels away at operational revenue in a shaky (at best) economy.
And Leiweke expects Donovan to come home and clean the garage too. “I went out of my way to loan both of these players and fill their wish, ” said their boss, “I did them both a favor. Now I expect them to return the favor back to the Galaxy.”
Commissioner Don Garber gave AC Milan two days – Friday the 13th – to get serious with the cash saying, “We’ve got tickets to sell, games to schedule, sponsors have programs, we have promotions being planned with ESPN and many of our commercial partners, and this just can’t continue to drag on.” Beckham, who just earned his 108th cap, feels AC Milan is the best place for him to prepare for the World Cup.
Obama to save US Soccer too?
But Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati submitted bids for the U.S. to host the World Cup in 2018 and 2022, and with 25-35 stadiums capable of hosting matches, the U.S. (22 in world rankings) mostly needs credibility and good will, obviously lost during the Bush administration. Gulati is looking to a higher power than Beckham for that credibility. “Given everything that President Obama has said,” Gulati stated, “everything he stands for, everything he’s talked about in terms of reaching out to the world, trying to bring the global game to the US and opening our borders up for a festival of 32 countries and hundreds of thousands of people from all corners of the world, would be viewed in a very positive way.”
And with the President planning to put the unemployed back to work on green and public works projects, the several MLS soccer specific stadium blueprints don’t look like a far reach. New York, Kansas City, and Philadelphia are building now, and Maryland and Houston have stadiums in the works. Even stingy New England is expected to cough one up.
The Houston stadium, estimated at $1.1 billion, features a retractable roof so games can be played in air conditioning midday — prime time viewing in Europe. The Chicago Fire, Columbus Crew, Toronto FC, Colorado Rapids, Chivas USA, and LA Galaxy already have soccer specific stadiums and Real Salt Lake’s beautiful Rio Tinto Stadium was christened this fall as the shiniest jewel. Rio Tinto is the site of the MNT’s final two World Cup qualifiers after they close out the hexagonal with El Salvador at Rio Tinto September 5 and Costa Rica at not-so-shiny RFK October 14.
US beat Mexico 2-0
The Beckham circus even overshadowed MNT’s Frankie Hejduk slap by a Mexican coach for swearing at/with (depends on your loyalties) the crowd after defeating Mexico 2-0 February 11 at Crew Stadium. Baby Bradley, Coach Bradley’s 21 year-old son, scored both goals just before the half and in overtime extending the unbeaten streak at home against Mexico to 11 matches. El Tri fully challenged the US squad in the first half with superior technical skills and attacking runs by Giovanni Dos Santos, who missed a shot that should have given the Mexicans the advantage. But Mexico collapsed after captain Rafael Marquez was sent off in the 65th minute for coming in late on Tim Howard, who earned a yellow in the altercation and will miss the upcoming qualifier against El Salvador for accumulation. Coach Sven-Goran Erkisson is unlikely to see the Americans again in the August 12 rematch as the loss probably cost him his job.
Bigger than Bradley’s two goals were the sky-high television ratings, which according to Spanish language Univision, made the event the most watched sporting event in its history with more than 10.7 million viewers. ESPN also set records, with 1.2 million viewers on ESPN2 and 223,00 on Spanish language ESPN Deportes.
Drew Carey & Seattle Sounders
Comedian/minority owner Drew Carey is working the media launching his new Seattle Sounders club this spring with a fashion show, a Members Association that allows fans to vote on team decisions, and designated (injured) player/underwear model Freddy Ljungberg and four-time World Cup goalkeeper Kasey Keller. This flashy upstart team, that stole coach Sigi Schmid from MLS Cup Champs Columbus Crew, is reporting unprecedented season ticket sales.
WPS Inaugural Season
The WPS is winding up for it’s inaugural season by picking off the best talent around the world, including Brazil’s Marta, 2006, 07, and 08 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. Marta left her Swedish Club for a $1.5 million deal to join Los Angeles Sol and play alongside WNT Shannon Box, kicking off against Washington Freedom March 29 at Home Depot Center, California.
Kelly Smith left the Arsenal Ladies to join Kristine Lilly and Angela Hucles with the Boston Breakers at Harvard Stadium, coached by former World Cup Champion Tony Dicicco and starting against Gold Pride April 5. Two other Arsenal Ladies also jumped ship for the WPS — Alex Scott to the Breakers and Karen Carney to Chicago Red Stars. England internationals Anita Asante and Eni Aluko also made the move, Asante to Sky Blue FC and Aluko to St. Louis Athletica.
Although WPS scouting was first rate and Puma lined up big time as a sponsor, the thinking behind these team names will likely be visited another day. But tomorrow, we’ll probably be talking about Beckham again.

Football News 24/7
good to see professional women’s football back in the US
February 17th, 2009 @ 11:37The Beckham story only overshadowed all of those things for journalists attached to their Beckham saturated news-feeds, not the 90% (at most!) of the people who simply follow the sport and enjoy the matches. The media flatters itself that enough people follow sport through the eyes of the press for these stories to distract attention from any of the matches you mention.
February 17th, 2009 @ 14:10looking forward to seeing how the new WPS plays out.
don’t think we’re going to see Sven get sacked over this, although with the interest in him across the pond it would be good timing…
February 17th, 2009 @ 14:47The serious American fan knows that Beckham’s departure will create howls among the mainstream sports media, but the effect of Beck’s departure will only be noticeable at LA matches, both home and away.
Should Donovan’s loan to Bayern become permanent, look for the Galaxy to miss the playoffs for a third straight year.
February 17th, 2009 @ 15:32I think that Beckhams bubble has burst in MLS!!!!
February 17th, 2009 @ 23:38Ummm…about that Houston Stadium? Did you dream that? Or perhaps too much peyote in your cornflakes this morning?
February 18th, 2009 @ 00:15NO WAY did beck’s situation overshadow the US Nat’l team win. Beckham’s has one effect on MLS soccer…ticket sales. And yes that effect will be far reaching but I for one am not surprised in the least…he’s trying to eek out as much money and press as he can from his last few seasons as well as try to get that one last shot at the England team. Can’t blame him for that but he did very little to elevate the game for LA or MLS.
February 18th, 2009 @ 03:34A $1.1 billion soccer specific stadium in Houston??? Uh, no dice. Maybe you’re thinking of the Dallas Cowboys new stadium, which is being built in Arlington, TX (near Dallas) and not Houston. It has a retractable roof, will cost more than $1 billion, but it’s a football stadium for the Dallas Cowboys.
The entire MLS league may not even be worth $1 billion if you include all of their stadiums, so there is definitely no chance of a $1 billion soccer stadium in Houston.
I think that any USA world cup bid should be centered on the various extremely large and posh NFL stadiums all over the country. There are definitely more nice stadiums here than in any country in the world, but they are simply not “soccer specific.” Probably more than half of the NFL teams have built new stadiums since the 1994 world cup, and most of the new ones are incredible facilities.
It doesn’t seem like a big deal to accommodate a pitch in NFL stadiums since NFL games require a bit of unused sideline space that soccer matches do not, so the field dimensions could probably fit in many stadiums.
February 18th, 2009 @ 19:06Beckham should have stayed in Europe in the first place but we all know who wears the trousers in his relationship!
It’s a clear case of Posh wanting to rub shoulders with the LA jet set and shop on Rodeo Drive……but then suddenly finding that Milan, the so called fashion capital of the world, was even more appealing, what with all that opportunity to wiggle her butt in front of dark, handsome Italiano’s!
February 20th, 2009 @ 09:38ART, it is the Dallas stadium with World Cup aspirations, good catch. Houston is working on a viable stadium (or move), but the Dallas Cowboys stadium, to be completed this summer, seats up to 100,000 and has the world’s largest video screen. Said Gulati, “It was built with soccer in mind. So the field size and capacity are perfect for the World Cup.†Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones said he wants to host World Cup games and will showcase major soccer matches this fall.
In discussing the 2018 and 2022 US bids, Gulati said, “I think that over the next several months you’ll see some prominent American individuals that have a love for the game be a part of our effort. We don’t have any Americans who have won the World Cup as a player and a coach like Franz Beckenbauer. We don’t have someone who has quite the same story as Nelson Mandela. We have a President who is known throughout the world right now as a leading light for change, and we think he can be an inspirational figure.â€
