Barcelona have 90 days to appeal the descision, which will see them banned from participating in transfer windows from now until 2016.

The Catalan club have been under investigation this past year, with a number of separate incidents having been scrutinised by the ‘FIFA Transfer Matching System GmbH’.

A FIFA statement read:

“The Disciplinary Committee regarded the infringements as serious and decided to sanction the club with a transfer ban at both national and international level for two complete and consecutive transfer periods, together with a fine of CHF 450,000.”

“The RFEF and FC Barcelona were found to have violated several provisions concerning the international transfer and first registration of non-Spanish minors with the club, as well as other relevant regulations with regard to the registration and participation of certain players in national competitions.

“The investigations concerned several minor players who were registered and participated in competitions with the club over various periods between 2009 and 2013.”

Barcelona were only just getting past the ramifications of the Neymar saga, which saw president Sandro Rosell leave the club after legal proceedings were taken against the club for the controversial signing of the Brazilian star.

Focus now switches to the current first team, and if the ban is upheld, what it means for the immediate future of the club.
