Manchester United’s €35m bid for star rejected by La Liga club

La Liga club Atletico Madrid had rejected a €35m bid from Manchester United for their star goal keeper Jan Oblak earlier in the summer, according to reports from Spanish newspaper Marca.

Throughout the summer, Manchester United have faced problems in handling the David de Gea situation. The Old Trafford giants were ready to sell their best player, but only at the right price, which Real Madrid weren’t willing to pay.

It has reached a point, where neither of the clubs are willing to compromise, but United are feeling the heat at the moment. De Gea has been distracted by the potential transfer and hence he will not be trusted to play United’s opening Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur.

“Manchester United always have to pay,” Van Gaal said as quoted by The Guardian. “We have to pay for all the players a certain amount, and what have Real Madrid offered? We are asking money and they have to pay the money. In the last few years Manchester United has paid a lot of money and we never received a lot of money for our players.”

The Dutchman added: “I am the victim, the fellow players are the victims, the club is the victim and that is why the transfer period has to change.

“He is the best goalkeeper we have had the last three years and in two years he was nominated by the fans as the best player at the club. Do you think the trainer-coach wants him to leave? I don’t think so.”

United had reportedly lined up Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak as a possible replacement for De Gea, but Los Rojiblancos rejected a €35m bid for the Slovenian international.

Marca reports that Oblak was United’s first choice to replace De Gea, and only after being rejected, the Old Trafford club had signed Sergio Romero.

In absence of De Gea, the Argentine goal keeper will likely to make his league debut for United, although Van Gaal could take a gamble on Sam Johnstone, the 22-year-old, who impressed during the pre-season matches.
