Arsenal have upper hand to sign €40m Manchester United target

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour recently gave his view that the Gunners do not need their former skipper Cesc Fabregas, who has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Camp Nou.

Barcelona are thought to be looking to reshuffle their squad this summer and there could be plenty of ins and outs. And one of them could be Cesc Fabregas, who came under criticism for his performances last season.

Manchester United are thought to be interested in him, but it remains to be seen whether new manager Louis van Gaal opts to make formal offers for him or not.

Mundo Deportivo says Arsenal are still in the best of position to sign their former player, although no formal offers have been received for the Spanish midfielder. When Fabregas was sold to Barcelona, there was a clause in the contract that says whenever any club puts a bid for him, Barcelona must confirm that to Arsenal, who have the right to match that offer.

In case, Arsenal do not pursue with the move, the Londoners would still get 50% of the transfer value, should any other clubs offer more than €36m for Fabregas.

Basically, the report says, because of this contractual complexities, Arsenal have the advantage of resigning Fabregas. Whether they will go for him at all is a different question.

  1. So…if Arsenal buy him back, do they still get 50% of the transfer fee they would have paid Barca?

    • no :) but it means that our bid would be worth more to them …. as they wont have to give away half the fee

id love to see him back i just dont understand where he would fit into the team …. and he’s have to start as he’s world class…

who knows maybe ozil will move out right and fab will sit in the whole with theo up front !!!! who knows what the manager is thinking tho

      • also they still O us money from buying him and song .. so if your looking for a money off kinda deal maybe they can take that off the bill :)

  2. Well, another way of putting your question is: will Arsenal be allowed to pay only 50% of what the rival bidder would offer, as a result of this clause? I am also interested in the answer.

  3. The clause is 50% of any amount over £30m . Not a straight 50% of any fee. So if for example barcelona sell cesc to man utd for 35m. Arsenal would get £2.5m (50% of 5m)
