The 26-year-old has been a long term target of the Old Trafford club, with several journalist who have a good connection with the club such as Mark Ogden, wrote on more than one occasion that Hummels will be United’s first choice target next summer.

Although the stylish defender has yet to pen a new deal with the club, but he has maintained time and again about his desire to stay at the club he joined as a youngster from Bayern Munich in 2008.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has dismissed such rumours in an interview with Bild:

“According to reports, Manchester United took the gloves off [opened talks] at least 13 times,” he said. “Mats is an incredibly important player for us, with whom we continue to plan.”

ESPN however maintains that sources close to Dortmund have told them that BVB are bracing themselves for offers for Hummels and could be willing to sell the defender if the price is right.
