Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso’s proposed contract renewal at Madrid has been the talk of Spain for the past few months. The play-maker is out of contract in the summer, and can walk away from the Spanish giants for free; something Real are reportedly loath to let happen.

But despite their best efforts, Carlo Ancelotti’s assurances to the press, and the speculation surrounding a deal being signed by Christmas; it now seems that Xabi Alonso is to leave Real Madrid.

According to the Spanish radio station, ‘Cadana Ser’, the 32-year-old is set to leave the Bernabeu as soon as January.

They cite personal reasons and the wish for a change of scenery for Alonso’s departure, and a whole host of English teams will be provide him his next career chapter.

Chelsea, Man Utd, and Alonso’s former side Liverpool have all been strongly linked with a move in the past months, and every one of them would benefit from signing the midfielder.

We looked with a little more depth at the reasons behind a Liverpool/Alonso move last month; and now with Steven Gerrard injured, Brendan Rodgers may be a very tempted man going into the winter market.

Utd’s midfield woes are evident, and a move for Alonso would be a shrewd one for David Moyes, as the Spaniard’s experience in the Premier League would see him slot in easily.

Chelsea are also struggling in this area. As we discussed only a few days ago, there is a noticeable imbalance in the team, and a lack of communication between midfield and attack, something Xabi Alonso could well remedy.

‘Cadana Ser’ adds that Alonso’s destination will not be based upon the financial elements offered by potential suitors, which arguably levels the playing field; perhaps this puts Liverpool at the top of the heap?

What do you think? Who will sign Alonso? Let me know in the comments below…

  1. Come back to Anfield Ferdinand – help take the Prem for Stevie.

  2. I dont think if he comes he will be teaming up with Stevie G in the middle of the park as Henderson needs to play now as his energy is one of the main factors behind the success recently. So it will probably be Lucas,Alonso, and Henderson in the middle till Gerrard comes back with him and Alonso taking turns to sit it out though BR might find that this is hard to do as both of them still have the quality to perform every week .

  3. Liverpool didn’t need Alonso again ,we need young mildfilders on January.

  4. Manchester United bid 40 mil. Euro for KHEDIRA, not for Alonso. I don’t know if you google translated that Spanish article that was basically talking about how in light of Ozil’s sale and Xabi’s lack of response to their renewal proposals, the Khedira deal didn’t happen and got them mixed-up, but anyway… you’re wrong.

A ManUnited bid for Xabi would be kind of hilarious actually. This is what he had to say when asked about the Mancs at Old Trafford calling him and Arbeloa “Scouse bastards” during the CL tie: “Bring it on! I welcome that as it means people still remember my connection with Liverpool.” He’s recently talked about how happy he is with Liverpool’s great start of the season and refers to Liverpool as “us” and “we’re doing great”. When asked about the way he left Liverpool he said it hurt to not feel wanted (by Benitez) and has always talked about Anfield as a sacred temple of football and the LFC fans as the most passionate, most supportive in the world long after going to Madrid.

I can see him joining Chelsea because of Mou, but the great David Moyes? Hahahahaha. Right.
