World Cup Shirts
The 2010 World Cup is around the corner and the national teams are trying their best to win the biggest trophy in the footballing world. Our favorite and our most hated players will be seen competing against each other for glory. Players like Kaka, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Cesc Fabregas and many others will be seen playing for their true color and personally for me, players like Ronaldo and Francesco Totti will be missed.
Here are the 2009/2010 kits or the latest kits of the teams that have qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup:
These are the latest shirts as of April 30th, 2010.
Argentina has won more international titles by any team; 19. They share this record with the Uruguain football team. They won the World Cup twice in 1978 and 1986, won the Copa America 14 times, the Confederations Cup in 1992 and the Olympic Football Tournament in 2004 and 2008. Argentina wears Adidas.
Australia cleared the group stages in the last World Cup until they were knocked out of the competition due to a controversial penalty kick by the eventual champions. This year, they must be hoping for a better luck.
Brazil holds the record of winning the World Cup five times in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002 and on top of that, they are the only team to have played in every World Cup. It is said about the Brazilians that ‘The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it.’ I would say, they sure did!
Denmark has made it to four World Cup appearances including the one to come in 2010. They have also made seven Euro appearances, winning the title in 1992. Denmark wears Adidas.
The team that has been labeled one of the favorites in every World Cup I have seen but they have only managed to win it once in 1966 at home. For me, England has good players but they are just not the team to win big competitions. Then again, I may be wrong.
Once champion of the world (1998) and twice champion of Europe (1984 and 2000), France, controversially defeated Ireland 2-1 (agg) to go through to the 2010 World Cup. The question is can Theirry Henry be the Zinedine Zidane for France and win them the World Cup. France wears Adidas.
Formerly known as West Germany, this will be their 16th appearance in a World Cup. They have won the World Cup three times: 1954, 1974 and 1990. They have also made ten Euro appearances and winning it on three occasions: 1972, 1980 and 1996. Germany wears Adidas.
The second most successful team in Africa, Ghana is the home to the Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien. Ghana or the ‘Black Stars’ has qualified for the Olympic Games Football Tournaments five times and won the African Cup of Nations four times.
The Hellenic Football Federation controlled Greece national football team had only two appearances each in the World Cup and European Championship until they shocked host nation Portugal to become the champions of Europe in the Euro 2004. They beat Ukraine 1-0 (agg.) in the 2010 Wolrd Cup Qualification Play-offs. Greece wears Adidas manufactured shirts.
Honduras was the third place holders in the 2001 Copa America after Argentina had withdrawn from the tournament. Honduras wears Joma.
Four time winners and current champions Italy are nicknamed ‘Azzurri’ (Italian for blue). They are currently ranked fourth in the FIFA World Rankings. Italy wears Puma.
Ivory Coast has the 1992 African Cup Nations title to their name and made an appearence in the 2006 World Cup. Ivory Coast wears Puma.
The Blue Samurais from Japan is one of the most successful Asian football team. It has won the Asian Cup three times and has qualified for the last four World Cups consecutively.
Mexico has qualified for the World Cup 13 times, twice reaching the quarter final stage: in 1970 and 1986. They have eight CONCACAF Championships trophies and the 1999 Confederations Cup trophy. Mexico wears Adidas.
Holland, or now known as the Netherlands, is currently rated third in the FIFA World Rankings. It has won Euro 88 and reached two consecutive World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978. In the 1970s, it was known as Clockwork Orange for its precision passing.
North Korea is recognized as Korea DPR by FIFA. Their most notable result was back in the 1966 World Cup when they upset the Italians 1-0 to gain a spot in the quarterfinals. They were about to upset the Portuguese by taking a 3-0 lead to go through to the semis but the Portuguese bounced back and defeated the Koreans 5-3. They were the first Asian team to progress beyond the first round of the World Cup.
Paraguay has never been able to go beyond the second round of the World Cup, reaching it on three occasions in 1986, 1998 and 2002. They have won the Copa America twice in 1953 and 1979 and they won a silver medal at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, losing to the gold medalists Argentina.
Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo is going to play in the 2010 World Cup because by 2014, there will probably be other youngsters we’ll be worried about. Their best World Cup performance comes in 1966 when they secured the third place, they were fourth in 2006 and lets see how they perform in 2010. Portugal wears Nike.
Serbia is the direct descendant of the SFR Yugoslavia and more lately Serbia and Montenegro. They have been to the World Cup a total of ten times as a part of Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia stood fourth twice in 1930 and 1962. They are currently topping their group in the World Cup 2010 qualifiers with two matches left. Serbia wears Nike.
The national team of South Africa is known as ‘Bafana Bafana’. The first African nation to host the football World Cup. They were banned for years from FIFA over racial discrimination until they were readmitted in 1992.
South Korea is recognised as Korea Republic by FIFA. They have participated in seven World Cup final tournaments and was the first Asian team to reach the semifinals in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, which they co-hosted with Japan. Quite a controversial tour that was. Anyways, It is the only Asian team to have qualified for the World Cup seven times on the trot.
This is the first World Cup appearance for the Slovakia since their independence from Czechoslovakia in 1993.
The other descendants of Yugoslavia, Slovenia played their first match in 1992. They have already appeared in the 2002 World Cup. Slovenia beat Russia 2-2 (agg) on the away goals rule to go through to the 2010 World Cup.
One of the most hyped about teams in Europe features stars like David Villa, Fernando Torres, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Iker Casillas, etc. They are the current European champions as they won the Euro Cup in 2008. They have qualified for 12 World Cups, reaching fourth place in the 1950 World Cup. Between November 2006 and June 2009, Spain went undefeated for a record 35 consecutive games including a 15 game winning streak record. The only other team to have a 35 game undefeated streak is Brazil.
Switzerland has made eight appearances in the World Cup, best performance coming back in 1934, 1938 and 1954 when they reached the quarter final stage. On the European stage, the Swiss has never gone pass the round 1 of the Euro in their three attempts. Switzerland wears Puma.
Football or, how they like to call it, soccer is not traditionally a high profile sport in USA. Still they are currently ranked 11th in the FIFA World Rankings and first in CONCACAF. They have appeared in the last five World Cups and they will appear in the 2010 World Cup as well.
These are the latest shirts as of April 30th, 2010.
