Wilshere’s contract renewal is a positive sign for Gunners
Arsene Wenger will be extremely relieved that gifted midfielder Jack Wilshere is ready to commit himself to the club. It would have a beneficial effect in terms of keeping others at the club.
One of the criticism of Arsenal in recent times has been that they are not able to retain the services of their best players. This is difficult when top star after top star leave the club for a different challenge.
Jack Wilshere hasn’t messed around, he’s come out and said his future with Arsenal will be sorted out within the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed this will also force Theo Walcott and Bacary Sagna into rethinking their own situations at the club.
Wenger has made it quite clear that he wants to develop a young and gifted side, filled with young English talent, over the next few seasons alongside the business model of the club which has been proven to work.
Wilshere told the Guardian:
“People are criticising the manager at the moment, but there will be a time when they look at the players and ask questions of us.
“We don’t want that, so we have to step up and be counted. I am talking to the club and I probably will be committing my future to the club in the next couple of weeks.”
The effect that Wilshere signing on will have is that players in similar situations should feel doubly determined to get their contracts sorted out with Arsenal so they can focus on achieving something.
Walcott has admitted that his representatives are in talks with the club and he does seem to be getting his way in terms of playing a more central attacking position. It’s also important to point out that Wilshere is a close personal friend of his, so Wilshere will now enhance the chance of Walcott staying at the club.
Top stars may have left Arsenal in the recent past because they don’t believe the club can succeed under the current way it is being run but Arsenal showed, with a young side, against Reading that they can play some of the best football in the country.
It’s also important to point out that many recent players have left Arsenal because they reached a point where they needed guaranteed success; Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie.
Had either of those players been far younger then they could well have stayed at Arsenal after seeing one of the best young midfielders in Europe commit himself to the cause.
Arsenal need to get Wilshere and Walcott signed on the dotted line as quickly as possible because they are the future of Arsenal and they will ultimately improve the chances of silverware arriving in North London.
