Will Tottenham buy Duff from Newcastle?
I was going through Ed’s excellent articles on Newcastle’s transfer needs this summer (here and here) and a thought struck me - considering that Duff was so coveted by Tottenham before he chose Newcastle last summer, would Tottenham still be interested in signing him?
Newcastle should not sell him unless they are sure they can keep their squad injury-free and not plagued by them as they have been in the last couple of years. Selling Duff now gives the younger players a chance to grow into first-team places, however selling him also denies them his experience and quality - the man may not have had a stellar season but he is still a class act and in my view will be an integral part of Newcastle push to the top-6 next season.
Tottenham have bigger concerns than buying a left-wing player, so they may not be too interested in signing Duff. However, Tottenham have shown themselves to be a buying club in the last two years and along with strengthening defence and central midfield, they could also pick Duff on the cheap.
What do you guys think? Will Newcastle sell Duff? And will Tottenham be interested?

I don’t think so Ahmed, a few reasons:
i) Newcastle won’t sell him
ii) If Tottenham do target an established left winger, I doubt it will be him - too injury-prone and like you say, hasn’t had the best of seasons.
iii) Too expensive (Assuming point i of my argument is incorrect)
A few other things - what are our bigger concerns? I also think Jol / Comolli / Levy will want to settle the club a bit and Spurs’ reputation as a ‘buying club’ will fade a bit, with the focus being more on stars for the future.
No.
Too injured
Too much money
Hasnt impressed
Bad judgement, evidenced by his decision to go there in the 1st place.
He made his bed…. let him lie in it
Will Tottenham buy Duff? No - he himself said that he wouldn’t come to Spurs, so any discussion is moot. Plus there are better options out there anyway.
No, and this is why…
Damien Duff is not very good player. He have good seasons at Blackburn, but he never have good ones at Chelsea. They sell him - and now he have more rubbish season at Newcastle. How is this a good player? He make a lot of money, but he not a very good player.
Tottenham will buy good players, not rubbish ones. He too expensive, he will want big money, let Newcastle give that to him.
duff is crap. Theres no way in hell we’ll buy duff. He’s done nothing for about 3 seasons, and is especially injury prone. And he’s a money hungry git too. spurs wont pay his stupid wages, that newcastle didnt flinch at paying.
Can’t see why Newcastle would sell him.
Can’t see why he’d want to move to a smaller club.
Liverpool were interested in the summer, if he did leave Newcastle he’d most likely go there.
Tottenham have bigger concerns than buying a left-wing player That couldn’t be further from the truth. Spurs currently have cover on every other position but not a single natural left winger. Tainio and Malbranque are OK make-weights (Lennon is not suited there at all), so the left wing will be the most important aspect of Januarys transfer window… At least that’s what every Spurs fan will tell you.
As for Duff, I think his continued prone spell to injuries will rule him out, plus he’s too interested in his pay slip, which Spurs won’t match.
No thanks, always injured.
Spurs can do better than Duff, his name says it all really!
And whats this about our left midfield not being “our biggest concern”? I’d say its probably our biggest concern.
Whoever wrote this crap is an idiot.
By the way, how the fcuk did the geordies take 6 points off us this season??? We battered them at the Lane!
Tottenham have bigger concerns than buying a left winger?
I’m not sure that is true. Spurs have a pretty good squad with cover in most positions. The one exception is the wings where Aaron Lennon is the only recognised player who fits the bill.
So a winger, left or right, is likely to be high on Spurs’ list.
Not that Duff is going anywhere. Newcastle won’t sell and Spurs won’t bid.
Ahmed - my view on this is if Newcastle need the money for other players in the summer he would be one that we could sell.
He’s a good player - don’t get me wrong - and seems to love it at Newcastle - but we have Charles N’Zogbia (and Alan O’Brien - and also James Milner can play on the left or right) who is going to be a real talent.
Duff hasn’t played too well for Newcastle so far.
Will we sell him - no - I don’t think Roeder will want to lose him.
Guys i REALLY hope that your not forgeting how good Duff is…… Duff when he is fit, is one of the best in the league. He is one of very few left wingers that has pace, strength, a good cross and a goal or to in him. I am a season ticket holder at Tottenham and would love to see him thier. Get him fit and their isnt alot better…….
Duff again he has his chance to join us but I think it was a bad choice to go there in the first place. I say no that we don’t sign him.
duff to spurs?
i hope so, he’s the most overrated player at the club.
bags of skill, no question, but not a fuckin clue how to play. has no idea what an early ball is, never goes on a powerful run to the byeline to get his cross in, preferring to go at the full back slowly, using close control. by the time he eventually goes past him the chance is lost. he’s a fanny & he hits the deck if you so much as breathe on him. if spurs want him they can have him imo. certainly we won’t feel any loss.
Why on earth would he ever go to a smaller club?. face it, at spurs he would play alongside ghaly, tanio, zokora etc. At Newcatsle he gets to play with solano, parker, dyer, butt and milner in midfield… Nope, forget it
its been said on this blog i know but spurs need more than anything a left winger, we have players that can play there but always have to cut infield to cross which is predictable and easy to defend letting the defense gang up on lennon, if we had a left footed left winger we would cause havoc and be a true top 4 team (though we need a better left back)
cant believe people are saying duff is rubbish, have a look at him on you tube! if fit awesome but your right, didnt want to come the first time so we dont want a player whose heart isnt in it!
Valle you are very clever…you suffer from what is known as ’selectivity’. He would also get to play with Lennon, Malbranque, Jenas and Huddlestone. Oops did I blow your cover?
I would say sign him.
NO I BELIEVE THAT THE BEST CHOISE IS DOWNING FROM MIDLESBROUGH OR PEDERSEN FROM BLACKBURN.
I think Pedersen would be a better signing. He seems to be a battler like Tainio and plays with a lot of heart, and not injury prone too. It is SO encouraging to see what MJ is doing to our beloved club. Onwards and upwards!
No we won’t and I think it would be a bad idea to sign him. He is too injury prone and is reaching the latter stages of his career. We are better off buying somone younger, fitter and better value for money, as what we pay for this ageing player may well be how much we snap up another player for, or even if we were to pay more for a younger option, we would be getting a longer term option. We won’t sign Duff, this is last Summer’s news.
Oh and by the way Ahmed “Tottenham have bigger concerns than buying a left-wing player”..?? Is that so?? Before you write something you should always get your facts right - this you have gotten completely wrong. Furthermore, if you look at the reason why we didn’t get Duff last year, it was because he said he had already played for one London side and did not want to play for another one. Therefore there is very little point in dredging up this debate again. As well as this, our policy is to buy young, we won’t settle for a second option as we didn’t last summer. We most probably have a list of top targets and I’m absolutely certain that Duff is not one of them.
Duff’s not playing well only bcoz he’s injured.Otherwise he’s one of the best left-wingers in England.
if they do, then they’ll show that a) they are incredibly desperate and b) they are not the potential ‘top 4 club’ they like to think they are.
