Will Ronaldo betray Manchester United?

Written by Ahmed Bilal

Update:Ronaldo signs 5 year contract at Manchester United

Jorge Mendes is certain that he will. Real Madrid are certain that he will.

Actually, let me scratch that and tell you the truth.

The Spanish press dreams that it will be possible. Tribal Football laps it up. The Guardian, increasingly resembling a “white-knight” version of Tribal Football, laps it up as well.

So let’s have it, shall we?

Someone from Madrid (Baldini) met Jorge Mendes (Ronaldo’s agent, and also Mourinho’s agent) in London last Wedensday. The contents of that meeting are unknown but speculation is the mother of necessity where news is concerned so let’s read some speculation.

  • Real Madrid have identified Cristiano Ronaldo as their No. 1 priority for next season. Yes, we know that, Calderon is eager to sign him.
  • Real Madrid say that they are prepared to meet Manchester United’s asking price - reported to be €80m (£54m) but considering that Manchester United have categorically refused to discuss Ronaldo’s transfer, that amount is pulled out of an asshat. Also note that Real Madrid recently said that they will not pay 50m for any player.
  • Real Madrid are prepared to beat any contract offer made by Manchester United - which loosely translates into throwing the player into money and hoping that he sticks around.
  • Mendes claims that Ronaldo will reject Manchester United’s contract offer. This means, if it’s true, that Mendes doesn’t want Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford. Why? Is it because he thinks Ronaldo will be better off at Real Madrid? Hmmm…
  • That rumour of Ronaldo wanting 140,000 / week has come up again. Since we don’t actually know, we can assume that it’s either Mendes who’s pushing for this or that it’s all a lie and Ronaldo’s only asking for parity with Rio (90k / week).
  • Mendes has also reportedly assured Real Madrid that Ronaldo will force an exit from Manchester United - in translation, that resolves to Mendes doing everything in his power to get Ronaldo out of Manchester United.

What do I think?

Ronaldo’s not going anywhere this summer.

Ronaldo’s not asking for 140k / week.

Real Madrid are not prepared to pay 50m. However, if Real ARE willing to pay 50m, then it’s something that’s worth discussing.

Jorge Mendes is working directly against Manchester United’s interests. I’d like to see how they handle the situation.

Real Madrid cannot be faulted for trying to get the player - although there should be regulations that prevent clubs from meeting agents like this.

And for the record - I understand the irony of the situation. Last year I was eagerly discussing similar transfer rumours involving Arsenal players. This year it’s Manchester United’s turn, and we’re going to be in this for the next four and a half months. Better get used to it.

What do you think?

Manchester United fans? Real Madrid fans? What do you guys think?

  1. He’ll leave - not this summer, not next, but one thing is for certain - he will round off his career in Spain. As for the lack of urgency, its a simple matter of having realized that Madrid were the epitome of the footballing world when Ronaldo was growing up, the recent past is a haven for individuals seeking retirement funds.

Yet, a dreams a dream - and regardless of how poor they are, he will pursue that dream, even if, it is for nothing more than a year.

As for the postulated meetings, its quite times as far as the media is concerned - they need something to discuss - what makes a better story than the kid who has been raised from the ‘talented, yet skillful cheat’ to the ‘greatest player in the game’?

Why is not possible that Mendes met with Baldini to discuss the possibility of Jose Mourino moving to Real Madrid next year? Far more likely than Ronaldo moving…

  3. Tabasco: I agree. If they met at all, it’s way more likely that they discussed Mourinho and not Ronaldo. Mourinho has been with Chelsea for quite a few years now, and this could turn out to be the worst of all the seasons.

As for Ronaldo: why should he want to move now…it would make no sense. I guarantee you that winning trophees is much more important for him than playing for Real Madrid. Real are shite and will be for at least 2 more years. After that it all depends on how they progress from now. Ronaldo stays in United, because he knows we play the best football (and a style perfectly suited for him btw), and because he loves the club and SAF (wonder what happens when SAF steps down though). Ronaldo will sign a new contract sometime this summer, I have no doubt. And just wait…when he has won the champions league, the premiership and the FA cup this season and a good number of trophees next season as well, he’ll want to stay even further. He has even said so himself…that he wants to stay for many years. I usually choose to believe in the players and not in what some gossip paper from Spain writes (remember that all the rumours were started by spanish newspaper AS).

On a sidenote: I think he’ll leave eventually, but I see him staying here 5 or even more years.

Lets be honest! If Man Utd do not win anything this season, Ronaldo will leave. Hes only won a FA cup and Carling cup with Man Utd. Ronaldo is eager for winnings and success. I think we have to win the premiership this season and possibly the FA Cup or the champion’s league for Ronaldo to stay. He said it an interview about a few months ago that the decision will be made on summer, therefore on basis of the contract and the clubs future.

  5. I don’t think anyone can blame him if he goes. It will definetely be a good deal for everybody concerned. I just feel that it will be in his and ManU’s best interest for him to stick it out for another season or two.

It’s true Cristiano’s won shite-all at Utd save the two English cups, but what has Real Madrid won in that time? I rest my case.

  7. I don’t believe Ronaldo will leave this summer but he will at some point and to be honest since Cantona this is one of the best we’ve had that includes Rooney too.. Forget about all the rumours going on..
United need to sign more players though especially defenders and strikers…

Maybe Madrid will get Mourinho, Lampard, Drogba, and Carvalho from Chelsea & wait another year to make a real run at Ronaldo.

  9. So, I’m a Manchester United fan from Poland. So, what do I think?
Simply, I can’t imagine any club spending for a player more than once Real spent for Zinedine. Not because Cristiano is worse. Rather because of the fact, that the era of huge transfer funds spent on players has somehow finished. So…that’s too much, that 80 m., even for Real.

  10. My god, dr and Tobasasco and Karl. Are you all retards or something. He’s said many times that he wants to stay with us for the good part of his career. Yes he will leave for Spain one day but be assured United won’t let him leave and he will sign a new contract.

Seriously these posts are just ridiculously stupid. Tribalfootball morons.

  11. LMAO at Tony Montano. Liverpool are shit

Why would Ronaldo leave the best club in Europe to play for the fourth or fifth best side in Spain, who incidentaly didn’t even have a team reach the last eight of the Champions League. The best transfer scenario would be for Ronaldo to cut ties with Mendes who clearly does not have the players best interests at heart and is looking to line his own pockets. At this level of professional soccer Ronaldo is never going to struggle for money and his motivation must be winning trophies. Why move to a team that is clearly in reconstruction phase? Why move to a team when he has no idea who will be managing the side next season? Real Madrid would not finish in the top four in the premier league.

He would be silly to leave united. They will provide him with every opportunity to win major honours every season. The Premiership is THE PLACE to be. Madrid are in turmoil. owen must regret going there. But then ronaldo is a stupid greedy cheeting selfish cunt.

  14. Real Madrid can want, but the words coming from Ronaldo himself suggests that he knows he\’s on to a good thing at Utd. Of course Mendes would like him to move because it means more money for him but Ronaldo is not stupid. Real are a has been team so why would you bother taking such a risk. Maybe in 4 or 5 years time when they have fixed themselves up Ronaldo would consider it. But considering the position Utd are in at the moment compared to Real why would you bother?!

sorry guys im a loyal united fan but until we win something this year then we are nothing.I dont think ronaldo can leave unless he is able to buy out his contract end of story stuff all the rumours he has a contract ie owen hargraves scenario.

  16. Ronaldo is irreplaceable, what the fuck is united going to do with 54 mil? that’s not going to buy them the title/FA Cup/CL. Also ronaldo’s stay at United will bring far more money for the greedy Glazers in future than any offer could make up for. In Short, Madrid can keep dreaming.

  17. First, I don’t think that Ronaldo will leave for Real cause Real is a floundering ship, even with all their galacticos.

Second, if Real offers 54mil pounds, I’d counter with “54mil plus Robinho and you’ve got a deal” That way we get 54mil, a product to work on, and the money to get Nani and Simao. So both wings covered, a trick pony, and no more stupid rumours!

Manchester United should suspend all talks with Mr. Mendes until he decides to act properly according to the managerial-club rules. They should completely ignore him and make clear to him that this is MANCHESTER UNITED (Not Sporting Lisbon) and all negotiations around Manchester United players can be done ONLY WITH MANCHESTER UNITED. Also, they should report Real Madrid to the UEFA for neglecting the player contract with the club and discussing issues with his manager who is completely ineligible to decide whether the player leaves or stays, MANCHESTER UNITED WILL DECIDE THAT DEAR MR. MENDES NOT YOU OR RONALDO. Even if Real Madrid would offer 54 mil., manutd will not sell Ronaldo despite high offer, and this is mostly because of the principles governing the club in which young players usually stick with the club for many years.
Yes, Ronaldo will leave at some stage in Spain but that would be sometime when he turns 30.

  19. He’s just signed a new contract till 2012.

    Nice

  20. A bad timing huh? Ahmed? :)

  21. Heh…

    Here’s the news

Wonder what the Spanish press (and the Guardian) are going to do now?

  22. Go after Jose I hope.

  23. You were all wrong he’s staying HaHAHA

  24. Bullshit! Real would do well to work with the talent they have on hand, instead of doing what they do best-poach. ManU know all too well that Cristiano is worth more than just bundles of cash and SAF might retire, demotivated and disheartened if ristiano really leaves. But, hang on. He’s gonna stay on for 2 trebles atleast maan.

  25. c.ronaldo is da best player in da world and is unswobable for any existing player on this planet, so all this bullshit about him moving you can forget it because its not going to happen UNDERSTAND.
