Will Ashley fire Wise to bring Keegan back to Newcastle?
Sky Sports (not always the paragon of truth, but you live with what you get) has reported that Ashley has met with Keegan today, with the obvious conclusion being that Keegan is due to be re-instated as Newcastle manager.
Is Keegan coming back?
One, I don’t think Keegan made his decision to leave without thinking long and hard about it, so for him to come back, it would take Newcastle to change things drastically. It would possibly mean the removal of Tony Jimenez and almost definitely mean the removal of Dennis Wise. Those are tough decisions to make, big decisions to make and if Newcastle have been quiet the whole week it’s either because they can’t find anyone crazy enough to come to the club or that Ashley has been looking at this option seriously for the whole week now.
Two, the war of words between the club was a knee-jerk, damage-limitation exercise that didn’t do the club much good. It was probably a PR move and as such it’s not something that will be a problem if Keegan does come back.
Three, Newcastle need Keegan. Of all the people willing to come to Newcastle, he’s probably the best of them. Head and shoulders above, I’d say. If Ashley can get him back, it might not repair his reputation immediately but it would definitely get the club back on its feet as quickly as possible.
Good thing they have wee lil Hull this week, right?
What do you guys think? Is Keegan going to come back, one more time?

At this point I just want some stability for the Club. If KK can come back and keep progressing then I’m all for it. One thing the club definitely needs to improve is PR. LLambias is a horrible chairman. Mort was loads better because he actually talked to the supporters. For someone with no prior football experience I thought he did really well. Llambias, another person with no football experience (aside from gambling on it no doubt) has been a failure in the minds of many Toon supports. Ashley doesn’t need to be speaking to the press on a regular basis, but somebody at the club should be.
September 12th, 2008 @ 21:14Tripp is spot on on all counts!
September 12th, 2008 @ 21:27Chris Mort was very popular with fans and did a great job, if Ashley doesn’t want to talk to the media or fans then the club needs someone to do the job and Llambias has been totally inadequate. Whether Wise is to blame is another matter, we can only speculate, but if he needs to leave or have his role redefined to bring Keegan back then Ashley would be a fool not to. Ashley won’t get the fans back on side entirely but this will be the best way to avoid open warfare, he may be a billionaire but antagonising tens of thousands of loyal supporters isn’t a great way of running a football club.
Before everyone gets carried away (and I’d love it if he came back and Llambias/Wise et al left), it’s not the ‘obvious conclusion’ – it’s possible they were talking about compensation and nothing more…
September 12th, 2008 @ 21:35I just pray to god he will, keegan is the only one who can get the players motivated and understands the passion of the fans. It would be great for the fans, and one hell of a reception for him, the place will be buzzing the debutants will experience the fans in fine voice if he does. It is also Mike Ashley only hope of gaining the fans respect back with time. Please Mike bring king kev home where he belongs!!!! Come on he toon!
September 12th, 2008 @ 21:57If we are just praying and nothing happens lets get behind the players whatever!!!
Publicity stunt by Ashley to say ‘look I tried, it’s not my fault (even though I lied to him and everyon else!)’. Just a pathetic attempt to stop the protests tomorrow….
September 12th, 2008 @ 23:17@Paul – Daryl from theoffside correctly suggests that if it was just about the money, a representative would have dealt with it. If they’re meeting personally, then this is personal and about the club’s management.
September 12th, 2008 @ 23:32Point taken Ahmed, although I think you meant to say ‘it’s more likely this is personal….’, as it’s still conjecture (unless you know something we don’t…lol!!)
