Wigan to reunite Owen and Heskey in January?

According to a report from the Daily Star, Wigan could make an ambitious January bid for Michael Owen.

Owen’s future at Newcastle is up in the air right now, and if he rejects Newcastle’s offer of a new contract, he could be sold in January so that Newcastle avoid losing him for nothing in the summer.

This one doesn’t seem too likely to happen, because Owen would appear to have some other options at his disposal besides Wigan. Besides that, Newcastle may well gamble on trying to get a deal done with him over the final months of the season and get as many goals out of him as possible in order to assure their Premier League survival and then some. Risky move, yes, but it might be one worth taking.

But, if it did happen that Owen did leave Newcastle for Wigan, he would be reunited with a familiar face in Emile Heskey. With Heskey’s contract also running out in the summer, Wigan could be looking at reuniting the England teammates and former Liverpool strike partners as a way to persuade Heskey to stay at the JJB past this season.

The thought of a forward line of Owen, Heskey, and Zaki no doubt makes Steve Bruce’s mouth water, but it’s a dream that I don’t see being a reality. Paying the transfer fee won’t be a problem, but his wage demands could be a stumbling block.
