Why would SWP go to Tottenham, and why would Chelsea want Defoe?
A transfer move that has all the trappings of a real move (down to the ‘inside news’ that both players have agreed to the swap) but the ridiculousness of randomly generated nonsense.
If the Sun are to be believed, Tottenham and Chelsea are discussing a swap deal involving Jermain Defoe and Shaun Wright-Phillips. It’s quite ironic, because just a few days ago I compared the two players and the opposite paths their careers had taken. SWP was the promising young player who had seemingly thrown his career away to move to Chelsea’s reserves, while Defoe was the promising young striker with a great England future ahead of him.
And now while Defoe is stagnating at Tottenham and is firmly 4th choice, Wright-Phillips has fought his way into contention and is now regaining his place in the Chelsea and England lineups. On the surface, it sounds like a ridiculous move for Chelsea, so unless SWP is insisting on this, I doubt this is true.
So that raises two questions - Why would Shaun Wright-Phillips go to Tottenham, and why the hell would Chelsea want Jermain Defoe?
Tottenham may, in some people’s minds, reach the Champions League soon but they aren’t going to overtake Chelsea anytime soon and for SWP to swap a promising point of his career with Chelsea for the trials of Tottenham (where he could be a regular starter on the left but that would be a ridiculous waste of his talents) would be suicidal. At least when he moved from City to Chelsea, he was going to a ‘bigger’ club. It’s not as if SWP is frozen on the Chelsea sidelines, is it?
Coming to Defoe - I’d agree that Chelsea could possibly use another striker, especially if there’s a chance that Shevchenko could bounce, but surely that’s not going to happen? And if Chelsea really want to go after a striker to sit on the bench as they play Drogba, Kalou and Pizzaro ahead of him, why Defoe and why not someone similar to Pizzaro or a very young striker like Real Madrid’s Soldado?
Defoe is definitely talented, but he’s not worth losing SWP at the moment.

Put simply, this story has legs because regardless of how SWP is playing Mourinho has shown little or no faith in him all along and conversely Spurs were interested since man city. Also, there is a lot of talk around the bridge of Sheva - shoving off - Ukraine (Kiev) has been mooted, AC Milan are noticeably strikerless just to name two possible destinations. Also, before Defoe signed his last extension Mourinho and Chelsea were sniffing around then. It is quite clear that if Chelsea ever go two up, they will be going Big man little man and perhaps more importantly, an option will be required for Jan-Mar when the African cup of nations is on. This all gives legs to this story.
That would be ridiculous - surely Mourinho wouldn’t sell SWP this year, not after he’s begun to play well……even at right back!
[…] Why would SWP go to Tottenham, and why would Chelsea want Defoe? […]
This is stupid. Not even worth discussing. I place no value on this story whatsoever.
Great move for both players Spurs have clearly given up on Defoe who really is a great talent that they have let go to waste. As for SWP, he has no place in a mid field that is occupied by Ballack, Lampard, Essien, Makalele, Joe Cole just a name a FEW. I dont think Shev is going to go to Milan even though he want’s to go because his wife hates lond and she misses Milan being a fomer model and all. Defoe is a way better talent then Pizzaro and Kalou and would complement Drogba well up top.
I like Jose and think he is the right man for us. So when Robben left i had no problems with him coz this kid was always injured and when he did play he was not giving his 100%. In short last season Robben was a big flop and to top it he wanted a wages increase after his underperformance. In short we were well without him so good we sold the kid and made good money.
But here is a player “SWP” who has been neglected for long and has not complained. Instead tried his best in the limited opportunities he got. His best is damn good too. So if such a sincere, silent and hard working player is swapped it is very cruel of Jose. Irrespective of whom he is going to be swapped with and swapping with Defoe in particular is foolish. We dont want to make Chelsea a striker museum.
lol, I was thinking this too when I heard it today. SWP is just starting to look good for Chelsea and Defoe has well and truly lost his way for Tottenham. Who says journalists have too much time on their hands?!
Dear Durim
you mean in chelsea only two strikers are better then defoe ? why u guys underestimate pizza because he was free. i think chelsea dont need defoe right now ,chelsea will bring one more striker in jan .
