The Geordies might have a bigger stadium than us, with more loyal and passionate fans, and I don't care if we have to gine tickets away to fill the stadium, we'll still be in the premiership next season!
Fair enough Newcastles won a lot more, but you must remember that for a smaller team we've done well, and I think our season in the old 3rd division gave us a reality check we badly needed. Since then we've gone from strength to strength, and apart from being relegated a few times we've had a hard core of in excess of 3,000 fans that nearly always turn up.

while shearer cant really lose in terms of popularity, id say newcastle are still doomed this year, and deep down the fans know it. (im a ex-pat scouser living in newcastle).

I agree with mrmyagki .. Shearer is in good situation and i think his premiership experience as a player will help him a lot in helping Newcastle.

As a Man United fan..you are right...we feel headache when thinking about SAF replacement!

I think it was a good call having Ian Dowie as assistant, it gives SHearer the advantage in terms of an advantage over other first time managers and won't need to learn from the first mistakes made by all managers.

Shearer is in a win-win situation while Ashley is in a lose-lose because as Scott mentioned, if the Toon Army stay up, Shearer will be the saviour but if they go down, he didnt have enough time to build, but the reason why Ashley is in a lose-lose is because its his fault if they go down and if they stay up he will get slated because he didnt get Shearer in sooner and possibly not be in the situation they are in, but Shearer isnt stupid, he didnt want to ruin his reputation thats why he took the job now because he is in a win win!! good luck to the toon anyways!

Nice article but I can't see a reason to be jealous. Plenty of teams have had former legends in charge, Liverpool(Souness, Dagleish), Wigan(Jewell - at a stretch although he was a fair good striker in his day for us), Forest(Pearce) and so on. Some did well like Jewell and Dagleish others didnt like Souness and Pearce. So not much to be jealous of, you want to be jealous of the teams with the promising and comitted young managers.

We should be jealous of Shearer though. He's got a dream job with no chance of failure. Newcastle go down and everyone blames Ashley, Newcastle stay up and its all down to Shearer. Best of luck to him anyway, with that team he needs it!

I can understand fans liking a previous club legend as manager, but aren't Newcastle limiting themselves by only backing old boys, and isn't this partially the reason they are where they are. Shearer's in a win win situation, if Newcastle stay up he's an even bigger hero, if they don't they know he's unprovne and won't blame him, but where does this leave the club, possibly relegated and looking for another legend who's prepared to manage them in the lower leagues. It's a risk, one which is likely to pay off, but I'm not sure every fan would be jealous of playing russian roulette.
