Why was Manchester United’s Rossi not used more at Newcastle?

Manchester United’s Giuseppe Rossi has been at Newcastle United since late August yet he has only started one game and been brought on as a substitute in another six games, with five of these being as a late substitute.

This includes an appearance against Reading on Wednesday when he was brought on in the 89th minute for Martins.

His one leaugue start was the unfortunate game on 4th November when Newcastle lost 1-0 with their worst display this season that sent alarm bells ringing at the club. Maybe it was this game that limited future Rossi appearances though the Manchester United striker was no worse than the rest of the Newcastle team that day.

Newcastle also cannot be accused of having a strong attack these days with Ameobi (and Owen) out for the season, and Sibierski is a mid-fielder playing as a striker and 10 million pounds signing, Obafemi Martins, is not exactly setting the Premiership alight with his attacking prowess.

While Giuseppe couldn’t be used in the UEFA cup (because Manchester United wanted him free for their European campaigns) it is still surprising he has been involved in so few Premiership games. Before the 3-2 win against Reading on Wednesday evening, Newcastle had scored 9 goals in 14 Premiership games.

Newcastle has been short of striking prowess all season, and whenever we have played Albert Luque, our 9.5 million pounds signing by Souness, he never seems too interested so Luque has actually played even less time than Giuseppe. When Rossi has played he has looked what he is - an emerging class player who lacks experience and needs games in the Premiership to progress.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Manchester United loan Rossi out next season to a Premiership side, but not Newcastle. I have to side with Ferguson on this one, by agreeing that Newcastle have not played Rossi enough, and he therefore has not benefitted to the extent Ferguson expected, and he is entirely within his rights to take him back to Manchester United at the end of December.

From local reports Rossi certainly seems a great guy, who trains hard and is an eager listener. He has probably enjoyed his experience at Newcastle, but it has not advanced his playing time in the Premiership, which was the agreement when he was sent out on loan.

As a newcastle fan i have not been impressed with what I have seen from Rossi in the PRem games he has played in and i think roeder has been proven right to stick with Sibs and Martins who now have 10 goals between them this season. Rossi may be a future talent but Newcastle can not afford to nuture new talent when we really need experience to get us out of the bottom half. We shoul dbe giving Martins a long run in the team to adjust not bring along a player who will be gone come Jan

  2. I think Rossi was brought in as emergency backup, not someone who would have played consistenly (especially when United were adamant to get him back in Jan and he couldn’t be there for the whole season).

Still, Rossi is a fast, clinical finisher and would have helped Newcastle a lot.

Hopefully he can go back to United and eliminate any need for us to sign Torres.

  3. I think it’s been the most pointless exercise of this year. He’d have played more games for Man Utd this year than for the Toon. As for not being impressed by what you’ve seen… the one start he had was up front on his own. In case you’ve not noticed, he’s not the biggest physical presence and so playing him on his own on the front line was the stupidest tactic I’ve seen this year. And the other times you’ve seen him have been for about 2 minutes of stoppage time. Pointless. He’ll go back to United and score a half dozen goals from a half dozen sub appearances and then Roeder will be confirmed the joke he is.

  4. Emergency backup or not, whats the point of getting him on loan if you dont play him. When Ameobi, Owen and Martins were out, Roeder played Damien Duff as striker over Rossi and that for me proves only one thing, that Roeder is a dumbfuck and maybe those UEFA pro licenses could do him some good.

  5. Alex Ferguson hamstrung the deal from the very beginning if allowed Rossi would’ve featured in all the early rounds of the UEFA cup and the group games this would’ve then given Roeder and the the team the chance to get used to and trust Rossi. Newcastle have been poorly this season and fighting in the bottom 3 and the team playing without any confidence isn’t the right environment for any young player to gain experience. As said Man U are entitled to take him back in December but how many games with he feature in? Challenging for the title, later stages of CL and out of the league cup leaves the FA cup. Coupled with the the signing of Larrson Rossi will be no-one near the Man U first team when he returns. Sir Alex must’ve had little else to moan about so he thought lets have a go at the Toon I haven’t done that in a while!
