Why Torres can change Liverpool’s fortunes
There’s a lot of talk (smack) from Liverpool rivals about how Torres is too expensive, how he can’t score goals and how Liverpool will still be a defensive-minded team with Torres around.
Everyone’s missing the point. Liverpool have bought pure talent and a player who will do much more than score goals for them.
Off the top of my head:
- Liverpool now have a world-class striker to bail them out when they can’t score at all.
- Liverpool now have a talented player to link up with Gerrard and Alonso and play at ‘their’ level.
- Liverpool will mint money from Torres shirt sales – and mind you, this is important because he just might pay for his own wages, giving Pool leverage to go out and buy more players.
- Liverpool are a better team than last season, mainly because of the attacking threat that Torres provides.
So, Scouse-bashers (I’m one of them sometimes), let it be. Liverpool have a great player on their books, and it’ll be a treat to watch in the Prem.
Mind you though, I still think they over-paid for him. There are some people saying that Liverpool paid 10m too much for him.
So be it. Liverpool will be a better side because of Torres, and as a United fan, this signing actually worried me a bit (until I found out that United were wrapping up Tevez, that is).
And while we’re at it, from our friends at the UK Soccer Shop:

He will be a good signing for them, no doubt about that. He’s a class act but if Rafa uses him in a Bellamy-style role, he won’t be racing up the goal tally sheets. Like Rafa says, they need wingers, pronto!
Liverpool won’t do sh*t in the league until they focus on winning something other than the CHampions League.
While I agree that he is a good signing, you can’t help but be skeptical. There have been many cases where a player can score abundantly in Spain but not do well in the Prem (Forlan). And Torres didn’t hasn’t even scored 20 league goals in his entire career. I believe he is a better option than Kuyt, Crouch, and Bellamy, but I don’t think he is the answer to all of Liverpools problem. I just think they could have found someone with the same skill for a much lower price.
I think he is a great striker and will do well alongside Kuyt.
)
Also i think he will link up well with Gerrard but i do think he would have linked up very well with Garcia (but now he’s gone
Anyway liverpool can only profit from this move but even i think liverpool over paid 4 Torres.
Torres will improve Liverpool games where the team cannot break down the two banks of four with his little bit of magic and directness. However it will not be enough to give Liverpool the title, but the signing of Torres will help LFC close the gap quite considerably on Utd.
What is needed are two wingers who score goals and create chances, in the mould of a Quaresma or Vicente. Only then can Liverpool actually win the title in earnest.
I don’t know why people always have to whine about clubs “overpaying” for players. What’s in it for them? I’s not their money. Anyway, if a club has enough money to “overpay”, that obviously means they’re loaded with loot. And that’s a good thing, apparently. I hate Liverpool, but that doesn’t change the fact that they have signed a world-class player. Neither does the transfer fee. What is important is that they’re stronger now, and that is what counts. Fuck the money.
No doubt Torres is good.
But look at all the failures of Spainish Players in Premire League(except for Xabi Alonso)
He will need at least one year to adapt new life.
But he will overcome it eventually.
Although I hate to see one of my favourite players to go to Liverpool instead of Manchester United, but I still wish him for the best.
Hope Liverpool can handle him!
Let’s beat Chelsea together
Torres, probably a gd player. But alas! chose the wrong club to pledge his allegiance. United would have suited him more or maybe Arsenal but choosing Liverpool?! I think he’s afraid to be of competition, afraid he wouldn’t be guaranteed a starting spot!
@ttts
that is my sentiments exactly that you managed to state so eloquently. Personally I think we’re too used to playing Fifa2007 or Football Manager
A club won’t pay x-amount if they cannot afford it?
fuckin armchair critics
Torres will be a great signing for them. But won’t be the answer to their main problem: No wingers.
People are talking sense at last. How can anyone gloat about the transfer fee? At the end of the day Liverpool have a world class striker on their hands. I would have been happy if Arsenal had got him for that amount
Btw, it’s a shame that the Scum got The Kid, he had Man Utd written all over him. But, he chose them because they’re a Spanish club now, in pretty much the same manner French players choose Arsenal, coz they’re a French club. So, they’re constantly linked with Spaniards and Frenchmen respectively, while United are only linked with world class players. Get what I mean? I only hope that one day when the Sir retires(not for long, I hope), United hire a British manager. If they hire, say, Lippi, Utd will always be linked with Italians, not because they’re good, but because they’re Italians. And we don’t want that, we want good players, and not the ones that “the manager knows”. About Torres, believe it or not, I would prefer Tevez any day. I hope they spend their last penny on him, he’s worth it. Glory, glory Man Utd!
Liverpool this Liverpool that ,that has been the song for a long time.To me Liverpool is like the Roman empire. It fell and never to rise again and the world moved on.so Liverpool fans where do you live? In which age are you? Torres or no Torres Liver will be the same, bouring. They will never win anything.
I think that cisse, kuyt, fernando torres will be the best strikers of liverpool. i am so happy torres joing the reds.
and luis garcia would be good playing in the right midfield in place of pennant and kewell in the left.
btw, Jeremy, when you said about xabi alonso being the exception to Spanish failures, you seem to have forgotten about cesc. now xabi is a good player, but cesc is better
Being a gunner, i have no business here, but I’ll state this, dear rafa, what are you going to do about your defense? Scoring goals wasnt the problem last season mind you. If nothing, the cornerkicks-crouch combo managed to beat even the famous milan defense, but what about the defense? Or is Liverpool depending on its fans vocal cords to do the defending? This is obvious because manu, arsenal and chelsea are strengthening their squads by solving their weak points and why is liverpool spending so much money on a striker and giving off a proven goal scorer(luis garcia) ?
iqnadirshah
have you lost it liverpool need to strenghthen their attack not their defense..you sure as hell have no idea about liverpool now do you…pool still need a couple of class wingers before they can actually label themselves as genuine contenders..
btw..i am a united fan
Ahmed Bilal: How on earth can you claim that Fernando Torres is a world class striker? Did his 12-16 goals a season set you off? Have you ever watched Atletico Madrid play?
For me the definition of “world class” is the top 5 in a position.
Henry
Eto’o
Van Nistelrooy
Drogba
David Villa
All these players are some who will get you 25+ goals a season and they have proven it. If Fernando Torres can be claimed World class then Darren Bent, Adebayor, Defoe and Crouch are also world class players.
torres is a good player but unless you have the proper set up around him hes useless, the recent sale of belammy for 25 million will free up money to buy a player that can play on the wing or hold the ball up for the likes of torres,
in the end his impact depends to much on the players around him and their abilities,
dude luke its not liverpool who’s gettin the money…its 9 million to liverpool and the rest 16 million in wages over 4 years that goes to bellamy thats the headline was west ham shell out 25 million for bellamy
Well put Redondo, we might as well just say all strikers are world class for as long as they score 10+ goals a season more so in domestic cup games. maybe for discussion purpose people need to be educated on what characteristics of world class players. Sheva is world class but he flopped, and a being world class you are supposed to adapt fast wherever you ply your trade and show tha difference.
i’m a chelsea fan so no hard feelings on sheva.
Torres is good but football in spain is not as fast and grity as that in England. Villa would have been better given his size, speed and goal soring prowess
time will tell
well actually if torres doesn’t work out for liverpool.liverpool will have no problems at all to sell him back to spain or either to man utd who have been interested in him for 2 years.Im not a liverpool fan though i still think that torres will work perfectly with liverpool because his style of gameplay is similar to liverpool’s gameplay.because Torres will have no problem to score from a counter attack because in spain he does the same thing. Most of his goals from spain came from counter attack. All the best to Torres in the premier league.Trust me he can do it!
lots of the goals that torres scores are from burst of speed from direct passes and we have 2 of the best direct passers in the world (alonso gerrard) i think liverpool can reveal his true talent that athletico only had a sniff of
torres has been awsome for athletico now being able to team up with gerrard should quareentee he will be a success.as for comments of tevez over fernando pure nonsense man u would have taken him if they could have got him.hard to say he is overpriced when u look at what man u payed for nani, anderson and the hugley overrated hargraves!
Good point redondo.
Regarding the point that pool overpaid for torres. I dont think they did. They did NOT pay the 27m release clause. They probably paid closer to 21m according to reliable sources. Thats decent value
Around 20mil plus luis Garcia
to unitedray.how can u say that man u have better str s than lfc. maybe the rooney is better than crouch but there is no way that smith oli & saha r better than our 4. on another point why do people say that torres is overpriced, when u compare the transfer of rooney to the 1 of torres you will notice that lfc got a better deal. in my opinion rooney is just another hyped english player who at the age of 21 has reached his peak and while torres is still developing.
lol @ luke 20, bellamy for 25million!! now thats over priced.
On a serious not, im a united supporter, & theres no doubt utd have been interested in torres for a number of years. But maybe they lost patience, or he just chose to work with rafa, i dont know. Bottom line is Liverpool have brought a qualty player with loads of potential. Im Quite envious, but after what we have brought this season i cant really complain. These haters need to move on, they would be praising him if he signed for their team.
Anyway i hope torres plays well and shows his potential while hes there to lead liverpool to as high as 2nd in the league (and no higher)
AK its nice to see a manu fan with an honest opinion but i’d rather have us claim first
Jaylad
according to a lot of the Spanish sources (Redondo has probably seen more of Torres than the rest of us put together and look what he thinks) on this website Torres hasn’t improved substantialy since he was 19. How can you say Torres is a better deal than Rooney when you haven’t even seen him play yet and for the last 2 seasons Rooney has been in the top 5 scorers in the league? And lets compare United’s strikers to ‘Pool’s. Rooney and Torres cancel each other out. You can also say that Kuyt would be equal to Smith because they both work hard without too much of a return. When Tevez comes he trumps Voronin and Rossi and Saha are better than Crouch. If you look at their Attacking wingers Ronaldo is better than Babel(who should be played striker and not winger). So yes I think United do have better strikers.
Torres will be successful because he has the directness and ability to conjure a chance out of nothing. As someone else has said, this will help Liverpool when they need to break down defences they are struggling with, when the likes of Bellamy, Kuyt and Crouch cannot.
But one great asset for Torres is his youth. Think about it – he hasn’t reached his prime yet, he’s only, what, 20 or 21 (not sure there). So if he is a success straightaway, great, but if he isn’t, he’s still young enough to adapt to the League, and if the worst comes to the worst, Liverpool can sell him and still recoup much of the transfer fee they paid for him, because he would still be an up-and-coming talent. Bear it in mind that he’s signed a six-year contract, so they’re determined to get their money’s worth for him
Fernando Torres is fantastic player with very good agility and he deserves to play in the premiership he will make a very good impact to the team.
Liverpool have paid alot to sign Torres because he is a great talent and liverpool are lucky to sign an impressive player!!!!!
torres i`m of spain i love you all my live.i am only 13 years old and all the live i am of the atletico del madrid(pero no porti haber si me entiendes en el buen sentido)ariadna&torres for ever
To jaylad, Torres is an excellent player. Very technical and very fast. But saying Rooney is an over-hyped English player really goes to show how ignorant you are about football. Rooney has skills many players can only dream about. The only fault he has is his temperament. If he isn’t prolific enough, it can only be the fault of Alex Ferguson’s stubborness in playing a system that doesn’t bring out the best in Rooney.
In terms of finishing abilities, speed, dribbling and techniques, he is better than Torres.
He is really a great player for our club.He will bring many
uncountable peace of smiles with joy.Dear Torres,we love you.
Thanks for all.
Don’t talk about money…we talk about the development of player like Torres..i think torres have bright future at liverpool..any team can be a excellent team..real madrid, manu, chelsea are also not strong team but they develop..torres should not accept any offer in the future, scoring is important then we can win and win..Torres will be a Liverpool Legendary..torres is cannot be a legendary if he move to other team like manchester united..or other team..we can see Owen move to real but Now?if owen still stay at liverpool, i think owen and torres could be a lethal and excellent pair striker..Torres score like instant maggi..fast food..God Bless Torres..
redondo judgement to torres is very2 wrong…torres prove that he can score more than 25 goal per season…
redondo..don’t judge other people b4 they do it first..now torres score 25 goal…
For me Torres now is a genious of the football. he has all the characteristics to be the one. yesterday evening i saw the football match, offisly i was a fan of spain, and i was stunned by the ability of Fernando Torres. Finally I can also say that Torres is one of the most beautiful footballer in the world. he was born to win…..
torres is amaizinggggggggggggg
i luuuuuuuuuuv him
hes
sooooo cool
but casillas 2
TORRES IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOTT!!!!!!!!! HE IS SO AMAZING! HE MADE LIVERPOOL SO MUCH BETTER!!!!
