Why Ribery to Bayern doesn’t make sense

Written by Ahmed Bilal

Franck Ribery

A few days back there was a rumour that Franck Ribery (Gary Neville lookalike, quality French winger and and a sureshot mover to Arsenal, amongst other things) had agreed terms with Bayern Munich and that the Owen Hargreaves deal to Manchester United was going to fund Bayern’s move for Ribery.

The move makes sense, because Bayern need good winger / attacking midfielder. It makes sense because Bayern Munich are a big club with big aspirations, and this season’s mishaps will surely not be repeated next season.

However, two things don’t make sense in this deal.

One, Bayern Munich are not playing in the Champions League while Marseille are. For what it’s worth, Ribery has said several times in the press that he wants to play in the Champions League, that he wants to play for big clubs and that he wants to win trophies.

Granted, Marseille aren’t going to win the Champions League next season. They probably won’t win the Uefa Cup either (Bayern might).

But if Ribery has said that he wants to play in the CL, why go to Bayern where they’re not anywhere near? Why not go anywhere else?

And that brings us to the next point - the ‘demand’ for Ribery.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are the two ‘continental’ clubs said to be most interested in Ribery (Marseille have refused to sell to Lyon - or at least they have said so last summer). Bayern will be losing Beckham to LA Galaxy and possibly won’t keep Reyes either, so they need a good winger. They’re in pole position in La Liga as well, and are guaranteed Champions League football for next season.

So aren’t Real interested? They have been able to ‘outbid’ other clubs in the past, so money would not seem to be the issue.

And where are the Premiership clubs? Will Wenger spring for a match-winning player? Will Benitez get an orthodox winger who actually knows how to play? Chelsea have been reported to be reluctant to spend big money and if Robben stays, there is little space for Ribery to play (SWP, Cole, Robben, in a diamond midfield, there’s really little space there). United need a winger (Ribery can play right or left, while Ronaldo and Giggs can easily switch to the left and center respectively).

Is Bayern the only top club talking to Ribery? Are they offering the highest wages / biggest transfer fees? The latter (wages / transfer fees) seems unlikely, so where are the other clubs?

Bayern will spend up to 120 millions and summon about 7 to 9 new players in their squad. It is not the money from the hargreaves transfer that will allow them to buy any quality player, but surely will be 1/6th or 1/5th of what they will be spending.

already signed: De sosa, Altintop, Schlaudraf, Jansen

    Expect atleast 4 more signings

Bayern have won the double for two years straight, and have not been spending anything in the transfer market, now it is time to rebuild.

De sosa was not such a big spending, shlaudraf from alemania achen is not so expensive, altintop is a great midfielder, Jansen is a starlet, and the coming 4 new signings are going to be big names

There is a probability that Ze Roberto will be back

    he is in top form

and yes, bayern will win the uefa cup

and will win the champions league in the following year

may god help all of the rest

    SIEG!

  2. Ahmed, Bayern are giant of European football. Bottom line. so Their getting Ribery makes plenty of sense. And their missing out on the champions league is temporary. They will probably win the UEFA cup even not to mention the German league and cup double next season with Hitzfeld back in charge. That is all that matters really.

Bayern makes sense but where is the competition, the bidding ? Seems like they got him cheap. Anytime Real or Manu are in for a player with his reputation other clubs come sniffing and the price goes to 20, 30, 40 million Euros.

“and yes, bayern will win the uefa cup” Don’t be so sure macleoud, a certain bunch of toffee men will be out for that pot too sir.

” Bayern will be losing Beckham to LA Galaxy and possibly won’t keep Reyes either, so they need a good winger.”

You mean Real, not Bayern, of course

Considering how public our Hargreaves deal has been i wouldn’t be surprised if we were going about this a bit more covertly. Don’t count us out yet!

The reason Ribery stayed at Marseille was the hope that he might be able to take them to the Champs league and play with them in the CL. After waiting the season, it will be too much for him now to quit the club to move to a non-CL team. If he moves now, it will be a chance to play in the CL as well as for a chance to play in a better league. The German league at the moment is not a drastic step up for Ribery. He has to be thinking La Liga or the Prem. Not even the Serie A.

A Bayern move makes no sense, really.

  7. any other year, the bayern move would make sense. but this year, i have to agree with ahmed, he would prefer to stay at marseille or move to another CL bound club.

  8. Ahmed great article but i think ribery is goin 2 munich because they are eupopean giants and will surely qualify 4 the CL next season. He might hav also gone because of money.
But anyway great article keep it up m8!

I Agree wid Ahmed ! United could use someone like him!

  10. Red Ranter it only makes no sense if Bayern where a small team. Bayern are giants. In desperate need of a player like Ribery. A thing none of the other giants share with Bayern. The move makes perfect sense. After next season they will be in the champions league guranteed! And Ribery moving there will be guranteed a starting a place. And if he does well he would be there main start one they return to the champions league the following season. And he would be at a European giant. A year’s wait of for champions league football would not really matter. When a player like Ribery thinks of playing for a giant like Bayern Munich. It’s that simple. You can’t compare hist staying at Marseille to moving t Bayern because getting champions league football is a hassle for the French side. While Bayern missing out on it this time around is just a fluke.

    to Mr Omega Supreme,

A depeleted Bayern lost 2-0 to A.C Milan, who crushed a full manchester united 3-0

we played without a playmaker , without a winger Schweinsteiger, and still lost 2-0

do you think that with a strong Bayern, and Ottmar Hitzfeld, I cannot have a strong point that Bayern will be winning trophies?

Anyway, you can check figures and facts, and history

    but i respect your opinion

one last advice, BEWARE of bayern

Luca Toni has just finalized his deal and joined Bayern,

He could have stayed with fiorentina and played in the champions league, one season…for a maximum of quarter finals, if the pigs fly.

But play in UEFA, and charge in the champions league the following year, with a strong team, and DER GENERAL Hitzfeld…doesnt sound too crazy to me

If Ribery joins Bayern, that would be the reason too, a bright future

Betting all on one season in the champions league isnt that smart.

there will be additional stars joining Bayern, they could all join other teams and play in the champions league couldnt they?

Bayern is one of the greatest, especially with Hitzfeld, do you know what Ancelotti and his players told the press?

they said Munich was the event that gave us the biggest push, when we won and qualified for the semis.

    a widely depleted Bayern…

    well, not anymore

Why would Ribery go to Bayern when only a few days a go he said he would only go to a side who is playing CL football next season and Bayern aren’t even near that!
Also it was more than certain that he would be making a move to the Gunners.

  15. RIBERY to Arsenal is a DEAD CERT if he is leaving Marseille!!! 4 reasons why he is a dead to Arsenal.

    1) Champions League Football Next Year and every year!

    2) French Connection - Wenger, Henry, Gallas, Clichy Daiby. (What top class player wouldnt want a coach who speaks the same language and team makes he can relate to)

    3) Premier League is best league in world and french players excell in the premierleague!
    4) England Closer to home!

  16. 1) Cant disagree with that

    2) Good, but he’s in Marseille where he has French-speaking players all around him, so how’s that relevant?

    3) First part is bias, and second is just not true.

    4) Germany, Spain and Italy have land borders with France. England is separated by water. Technically, England is a bit farther away.

Just because bayern have won lots of trophies in the past doesnt mean their certain champs in the future, they will still have to work hard and play well, i CANT see bayern signing Ribery, because:

    1. German league is boring

2.He Has stated over a million times that he wants to play for a CL team, which suits his style of play.

Will someone explain to me,why he would move to a uefa cup team(even if it is for one season)after helping marseille reach the CL(his ultimate target)

  18. Why all the hype on ribery anyone? couple of good world cup games not much else, he is not world class and i expect the best sort of offer he will get will be from teams like bayern, good in there own league but well down in the european rankings

  19. Corey - take it you havent seen Ribery in much action other than the world cup. For those who havent seen much of him go to http://www.youtube.com then type in “best of frank Ribery” per class act!
Thats what the hype is about! And he is only 23! He is an all out winger! Which arsenal need!

Him at arsenal would make him even better with the surrounding cast of arsenal! Hope the gunners sign him

Ahmed - Some of the best players in the premiership are/were french! Sure the all time best voted forgein player ever in the premiership was Henry (On Sky one).

Yes true at Marseille everyone speaks french, but marseille aint going to win CL next year…He know’s this himself he has a better chance at the Super Clubs; Arsenal, Real, Barca, Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool, AC Milan, Inter, Spurs*

*YEAH RIGHT, SPURS fans think they are super club - NO chance HA HA!

  20. Ahmed, the points that ALF15 made, which you disected, i have to say i agree with all of them. How point number 2 is relevant is that although FR is playing in France and surrounded by french speaking players/coaches Arsenal are a bigger team. also if you look at the struggle that it was for Marseille to qualify for the CL then look at the Arsenal team and how we are improving, it is quite clear that 4th is the lowest Arsenal will finish in the Prem meaning CL football every season. Also i think any top, up and coming player in the world would like a chance to work with Arsene Wenger. look at the guys track record, Anelka, Vieira, Petit, Witord, A.Cole (despite being a prat), Ljungberg, Pires (ex-Marseille) and of course Henry and then look at the team that FR will be playing in with the likes of Fabregas, Gilberto, Clichy, Toure, Rosiky, Hleb, Adebayor, van Persie, Deninlson, Wallcott, Eboue and not to mention FR’s VERY good friend, Titi Henry.

Also Arsene has quite clearly stated his admiration for the player and his desire to sign “only super super class players”. Also the player has stated his admiration of the Prem and Arsenals style in particular.

I thnk it is just the question of whether Arsenal spend the cash and if FR wants to play for the future Prem/CL champs because i really do believe that the squad at Arsenal at the moment, although young, is going to rule the Prem and Europe for a long time when they hit peak. just like Man U in the early 90’s but with more flare.

Trophies are coming to Arsenal next season, not the Prem but i am not saying which ones, and then from there Arsenal will dominate from 08/09 season onwards.

If it is trophies and medals and CL football Ribery wants then North London is the place…..and i dont mean shite heart lane!!

p.s - i am an arsenal season ticket holder and not a match of the day supporter of my team so i get to see the quality and progress of my team week in week out from the stands.

  21. Well, too bad for all you gunner fans. Ribery to Bayern.
Corey- “good in there own league but well down in the european rankings”
I’m sure you couldn’t be talking about Bayern…I forgot…when was the last time that Arsenal won the Champions League? Or got to a final…or a semifinal? And wasn’t it that very same Bayern Munich that got past Arsenal in the CL a couple of years ago? Don’t hype your own club too much when they aren’t even doing that well in the league and are nowhere near CL winners potential.

  22. Oh yes, sorry. you’re one sorry champions league final last year in which you got waxed by Barca. Hold your tongue before you go ranting nonsense on the internet.

  23. No trophies, no medals and no Ribery too ….
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/6731815.stm
Mebbe the ‘voyeur’ would now look at a “super super class english player” for a change

If anyone of you can remember what Ribery said during the world cup, would not be shocked to hear the news that he is going to Bayern. He claimed soccer was never his ambition. He only played to try out the game and was surprised he was good at it and got picked to represent the country. It all happened without him intending it(not really his dream). IMO I believe he is tired of high level competitions(written all over his face) and need a break for at least a year and also wanted to be paid well. Bayern didn’t qualify for CL and must have offered him a very attractive pay package. Thus his decision(doesn’t make sense at all to many) to play in the german league with Bayern.
