Why Paul Scholes won’t leave Manchester United for Sunderland
It is widely rumored that Roy Keane is set to lure former Manchester United team mates Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt to The Stadium of Light.
With Joey Barton heading to Newcastle, Butt is likely to slide down the pecking order for midfield places, and could be tempted by Keane’s offer, regardless of talk he is favorite for the captain’s armband after the departure of Scott Parker.
What I don’t see, however, is Scholes leaving Manchester United. Ever.
Paul Scholes is a family man. One of his reasons for not playing for England anymore is his young family, and desire to spend more time with them. For this reason alone I don’t see him upping sticks and heading north.
Sir Alex Ferguson would be mad to let him even if he tried. With Hargreaves, Anderson and Nani joining the ranks, Scholes my find his outings limited, but his experience will be invaluable with next seasons main target in mind. The Champions League.
All the signings point to an assault on club football’s biggest prize. Hargreaves to provide the ruthlessness in midfield missing since Keane’s departure. Nani to push down the left as Giggs starts to slow further. Anderson to finally provide a genuine attacking option from the bench.
As with Giggs, Scholes is the sort of player you can see taking up a coaching role when he hangs up his boots, and players like Anderson can only improve under his wing.
The £2million bid will get Paul Scholes thinking. Thinking about the possibility of playing every week in a possible relegation battle, or resting more and fighting for the Champions League. Not for too long tho….

Paul scholes leaving. the thought is laughable, where do you guy’z come up with this tales.Predictions for dummies?
Everybody knows that Scholes if going nowhere (including Roy Keane). It’s barely worth commenting on this kind of nonsense. SAF has said in the past that the great thing about Scholes is that the only club he’d ever leave United for is Oldham… and I don’t think Oldham are in a position to buy him just at the moment.
On another note, I guess it’s a sign of the success of the site and money is money but… sad to see the arrival of inline advertising on Soccerlens. It just takes the gloss off the sense of quality – bit like watching ITV covering the football.
It makes you think… what is Keane up to? Is he going to try and bring Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister out of retirement? Paul Parker? Andy Cole? well… actually… that last one isnt to crazy
Btw, anyone else share Ben’s views? I don’t care much for inline advertising, I’m trying it out on SL to see if it works on football sites or not. With SL’s traffic levels it’s easy to test things quickly here.
Anyway, feedback on that would be good
Keano should go after Richardson and Fletcher – two players who will really improve Sunderland. As well as Silvestre, and maybe Dong on loan.
We’ve heard these rumours up here in Sunderland for a few weeks now and as much as I’d love to see Scholes move to the SoL I don’t think anyone seriously thinks there’s anything in this. Fergie’s no idiot so to let a player like Scholes leave now, especially after the season he’s just had, would be madness. It’s a nice thought but it ain’t gonna happen.
Ahmed :
Again, get a grip on who says what here.
Ginger Ninja will retire and go to Oldham Athletic, play a year or start coaching them
PERIOD
I completely agree with Raju, BTW, i also heard the Pink Power Ranger will sign for Aberdeen on free next season…
Raju – what’s wrong mate?
Scholes at Sunderland?? who got this stupid idea??!!! u know money can buy many things but not wisdom and experience!! Scholes is still one of the best midfielders in Europe and SAF wont even dream of selling him!!!!!!!!!!
scholes will end his career at united. and nani wont be able 2 challenge giggs for at least 2 years. have u seen him play?!!
I dont think Scholes will leave. As stated he is into his family life and that means NOT uprooting your wife and kids to go play elsewhere even if it is for your old mate Keane. Scholes has been amazing this season past. Defo still has alot to offer Man Utd and can only be beneficial to players like Carrick and Anderson during next season.
I agree.. Paul Scholes AND Ryan Giggs will never leave Manchester United. I just cant see it happening. If anything, Keano should be back at Old Trafford!!! As Fergies understudy. Carlos who?
Hey what the hell are u thinking.Scholes is the 3rd best premiership player in the season just ended.Dont even think about him playing for a relegation club.If united are going to win trophies next year then Scholes has to play an important part in it as he has done in all the previous premiership winning sides.
I think its wrong to assume SAFC will be involved in a relegation battle, regardless of our pisspoor showing last time around. We are a different proposition this season. Does Scholes want to be playing regular football at a club pushing to break into the top six, or pick up easy money warming the bench and doing nowt ? We’ll see, but I don’t think he’s the latter type of player.
It’s not such a big surprise that the likes of Scholes, Giggs, Solsjkaer have been linked with moves away this summer. Alex Ferguson made a comment recently saying that it might be time to make some tough decisions regarding the older members of United’s squad. Roy Keane mentions in his book that Ferguson took the hard line with the likes of Robson, Ince, Kanchelskis, Bruce, Pallister and Hughes by letting them go prematurely. So it wouldn’t surprise me if any of the 3 mentioned above did leave and to Sunderland? Well, why not. The dark cloud has cleared now and hopefully Quinn and Keane can drive us to be an established team in the Premiership.
The way everyone is talking you would think Manchester was a thousand miles away from Sunderland – its 130 miles so its conceivable, even with a young family, that Scholes could move to the SOL. Personally I cant see it happening but you never know, footballs a funny old game and if it did happen I, for one, would be well chuffed.
The key word in there is POSSIBLE relegation battle. I don’t personally think they will be, and I hope they aren’t… but better prepared teams have come up from the championship and gone straight back down again. My only worry for Sunderland is how many players Keane is going to bring in, and if they will have time to gel before the season kicks off. Not to mention the moral of players who are on the brink of playing in the Premiership only to hear endless rumors about 30+ year olds replacing them.

How is sunderland different to any club regarding bringing players in and them gelling together??
They aren’t. It’d be the same with any team. Two reasons that jump straight to mind are the sheer number of players that are being talked about, coupled with Keane’s inexperience. Yes Keane has done well getting an existing team organised, but it seems every player over 32 or in United’s reserve team are linked with them.
so thats scholes, smith, richardson, butt…. any other man utd players ex or present coming to us?
hey ahmed it kinda ruins the experience for me too (the inline advertisments) i dont post much but i come to read alot. . but yeah not too thrilled with that change
i definetly like the decided manchester united focus
haha
Ahmed,
Last week some FM/CM dude had posted his dream team using some Game trainers in here as his Chelsea line-up.
Today someone pops-up with this idea.. U know SL can do better
joninjapan – thanks for the feedback. admittedly i was uncomfortable with them in the first place – will remove them after some time.
Raju – you obviously haven’t been reading the rest of SL
but yea, thanks for the reminder.
To be fair, this wasn’t Chris’s idea, he’s refuting a rumour that popped up last week. AFAIK, that’s what SL does with joy
SL takes rumor and crush like bug!
Yea, it’s what we do here…you know, like this rumor.
[...] and for more rumour busting, read this and [...]
it’s utter crap. You might as well say steven gerrard will be leaving liverpool! craps! Scholes is a red devil through n through!
The most complete player, his only shortcoming is that he has never learned (and will never learn) when not to tackle.
