Why the Kirkby move is great for Everton

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: Everton - Features

Everton’s proposed new stadium

Although the poll for Everton’s proposed move to a new stadium in Kirkby was 59% in favor, there is still strong opposition, especially along the lines of Everton “abandoning its social and cultural roots” as a club.

While it’s true that moving out of your city for a new stadium isn’t the best way to go forward (and gives opposition fans cheap material to criticise Everton with), it’s the only option left open to the club if Everton is to successfully compete in Europe and in the top echelons of the Premier League.

Chelsea is a great example of how a club needs to increase it’s revenue base if it wants to compete in the long-run - despite Roman Abramovich’s heavy investing in the club it’s clearly not sustainable and Chelsea are working hard to bring the club to financial independence.

In simple terms: Everton need more money to build a better squad, to attract better players and to achieve the sort of success the big four have become familiar with. The only way to get that money, realistically (I don’t see an Abramovich coming to Everton tomorrow), is to move to a bigger stadium. Arsenal went through the same pains and in the long run they’ll be a much better club for it. Everton must do the same, and while the cost (moving out of the city) is great, the cost of not progressing beyond what Everton has already achieved is even higher.

  1. Sorry, I dont live in the UK but Kirkby? Is that out of Liverpool/Merseyside/Everton?
From what you’ve said I guess it is, Well that is a huge move and gamble, fuck moving out of your clubs home city thats bizzare, Wont they change the name since there not really from Everton then?

Nice looking Stadium though, Better than the things we’ve seen from the New Anfield (Whatever it is called Stanley Park).

Kirkby is part of Liverpool and Merseyside.
Knowsley Council Run the Kirkby Borough.
Liverpool City Council Run the Liverpool CITY area.
These are Arbitary and Political lines drawn to subdivide the Liverpool area into manageable chunks etc.
Kirkby People are 100% Liverpudlian Scousers.
There are risks in moving away from your Traditional Roots but there are also Huge Opportunities.
The move is ONLY 4 miles and may allow us to compete with the so called “big 4″ again.
    C O Y B !!!!

  3. I think you ought to consult a couple of Everton Websites e.g. Toffeeweb and Blue Kipper before you jump to the conclusion that this is such a ‘great move for Everton’.
Everton probably do have to move from Goodison but Kirkby (pronounced without sounding the ‘k’ for those who have never heard of it) is not the place to go to enhance our profile or attract corporate customers and it will not attract a new fan base in that part of the world which is already well served by other clubs. The move should have been closer to the city centre and this would have enabled us to compete as a venue with the new Anfield and other northwest venues for alternative entertainment, conferencing etc - is anyone really going to want to put on a gig at Kirkby?
Sorry EFC have got this wrong, so have the supporters who voted yes (30% didn’t vote by the way) and so have you. We will live to regret this move. Nils Sats Nisi Optimum - My arse!

  4. Thanks, Fuck Ahmad you made it sound like Everton were moving from Merseyside to fucking Baghdad!

Its only 4 miles away so I hear!

  5. Nice looking stadium though!

  6. Will this stadium have naming rights?
Have Everton said anything about Naming rights or anything like this?

Is there any takeovers possibly at Everton too?

    Can I ask more questions?

  7. “Wont they change the name since there not really from Everton then?”

Correct if I’m wrong, KyleAusGooner, but as far as I know, Everton don’t actually play in Everton. As I said, I may be wrong, but I’m quite certain of this.

Neverton dont need a new stadium because they are a small club and they dont even fill woodison park to capacity. They would be better off saving their pittance to continue buying average players and remain a mediocre midtable team. know your place!!

  9. plasticscouser - I though you were dead mate. welcome back, I knew we were missing the original liverpool bastard reader.

Liverpool Fan (if you’re reading this), know your place :)

  10. August 26, 2007plasticscouser

according to my highly biased and probably innacurate sources, woodison were something like 7000 below capacity today .What i want to know is how the hell do they intend to fill a bigger stadium, particularly one that is built in knowsley (which nearly half of the fans are opposed to!) it just doesnt make sense to me.

Nice start to the season ahmed! :-)

  11. August 26, 2007plasticscouser

oh and yes ahmed, i died last week and went to heaven when torres scored, before those bastards styles and lampard brought me crashing back down to earth!! ;-)

  12. Hahaha!

    plasticscouser

you’ll be going to hell when Van Persie scores against liverpool this october!

and not even the mighty “Torres” will bring you back!

  14. August 26, 2007Liam O'Kelly

It’s a nice stadium but I think they probably wont have 4 skylights. What’s the capacity? I have to say Everton have really been a surprise package last season and the start of this one.

  15. August 26, 2007Liverpool_Fan

I think its a good oportunity and plus about 60% of the footy fans i know support Everton so they can get the fuck to kirby lol :)

Know my place??? Was i the replacement? :) ohwell it was my life choice (i think) but plastic scouser you do have a point i for one want to know how everton will fill this stadium :)

  16. August 26, 2007plasticscouser

Maybe they intend to fill the stadium by offering fans free tescoe value pies. every little helps :-) Atleast when they move, it wont take them long to pack all the silverware

  17. Everton has to get a few titles under their belt before they contemplate such a move.

A half-filled stadium on TV (and it is global) looks embarrassing is also financially wasteful.

  18. August 26, 2007plasticscouser

tesoe value pies - small, tasteless, never filled to capacity and can induce vomitting. Bit like everton :-)

  19. August 26, 2007plasticscouser

smartass gunner. smartass comments always come back to haunt you.

  20. August 26, 2007smartass gunner

    ehhhhhhhh…………………..no they dont!

  21. August 27, 2007Liverpool_Fan

good comeback gunner very original :) i am looking forward to see this

  22. August 27, 2007smartass gunner
