Who Will Tottenham Buy Next?

Written by Ahmed Bilal

Michael Carrick’s sale to Manchester United presents Martin Jol with the extra funds to pursue at least 2 new players.

Tottenham’s squad is still young, and while experience does not necessarily mean that they go for players on the wrong side of 30 it would make sense to bring more experience into the side.

In addition, Tottenham still need a left-sided midfielder, and while they have the cash to splash on a Premiership player like Downing, Jol might be tempted to look outside England.

I’m also not too convinced that Tottenham have the right mix to their defence. Maybe that has to do more with the fact that it’s a young side, but if the Spurs want to be more than just 5th place (a title they will have to fight for with Newcastle, Bolton and Manchester City next season), they will need to add experience to the back four as well.

So…

Who do you think will be Jol’s next recruit at White Hart Lane?

Spurs should be looking to purchase chimbonda from Wigan and a left winger maybe Downing I think if we purchase these two we have a decent chance of a top 4 finish this season as the right back and left wing are the only weak links in the spurs team.

  2. Yes jasonyid I agree that those positions are clearly weak stalteri as a pile of …. and we need someone decent to play on the other wing as lennon is the dogs doodars on the right…c`mon you spurs.

  3. July 29, 2006 Jack (spurs)

    i’d like to see either;

    -Klose/Ashton/Mido(as the second CF)
    -Willhamsen/Touma/Downing (as LM)
    -C.Davies/Mexes (CB)
    -Hargreaves (RB or DM)
    -Bridge (LB)

two or three of these players could see us challenging for a top four position.

I hope we don’t spend £15M on overpriced premiership players. The club’s policy of buying young talent at reasonable prices has paid off well (e.g. Robinson, Lennon, Dawson etc). Selling Carrick for £15M + is a steal, but then wasting £7-8M on Downing (who can’t dribble and whose crossing is average) is a mistake. Also when are we clearing out 3 or 4 other midfield players that won’t get regular games in the first team?

  5. Spurs should buy atletico madrid’s martin petrov.. Lightning speed.. goal scorers.. left sided.. what else do we need??
he’s bulgarian.. will fit well with berbatov..

  6. July 29, 2006 h4lfpint

Jol should give Ziegler a fucking break, he’s got what it takes, besides Davids played left flank all last year, can’t see why he can’t continue.. we can play davids jenas zokora and lennon, we have ziegler and huddelstone to back up the midfield, ziegler can always cover davids.
And to those who says that Davids don’t cut it anymore don’t know crap.
Can’t understand why its a subject at all, he is the best defensive player in the spurs side alongside with king.
If it was’nt for davids we would have ended up in 14th place as usual.. He’s got experience and he is the motivator and mentor for the other lads.
He turned Barcelona around and did the same thing with Spurs!

we should be looking to bring in bridge for left bk chimbonda for right bk and sorin for left mid probably get all 3 for around £10m or £11m

  8. These four would make me a very happy Yid…

Petrov on the left of midfield
    Chimbonda at right back
    Hargreaves holding midfield
    Kuyt up front

Happy Happy days… Even if we don’t get them, we’re in for another great season :-)

    COYS!

  9. Carrick to Utd., why not King to Chelsea, Lennon to Liverpool and Robinson to Arsenal, just so that we can give all the top 4 a better chance of finishing above us. This would give us loads of money for Mr. Comoli to spend on Bulgarian, French, African players that no-one has ever seen play and we can look to become the new Arsenal…well we might have to trade that nice Mr. Jol for that nice Mr. Wenger as well.

What a club we support…look at the attitude of Arsenal over Cole…they are out to keep their main assets away from rivals. Dave Whelan of Wigan seems to be another Chairman who understands the value of assets when he said if Chimbonda didn’t want to play for Wigan then he could sit out the rest of his contract…he may not stick to that of course but his initial sentiments are the right ones.
Carrick doesn’t want to play for Spurs then fine, just sit at home for a couple of years and then see how much you are worth….but giving Utd. exactly what they need to stay above us in the Premiership is not good business, it is just plain stupid, and signals the way Spurs are being run. If any of the top 4 have injury problems come January then they all know they can come shopping at the lane if the price is right.

  10. Curtis Davies just signed a new 4-year contract with his club.

Hargreaves wouldn’t touch Tottenham with a barge-pole. He’s already said that he wants to go to a club that’s in the Champions League. This year, at least, Owen ain’t comin.

Davids is a great player, I agree.

No offense, but lots of wishful thinking here. Any concrete news? I know Chimbonda is one possibility, and that Petrov is also in the frame. Who else?

  11. DaveK, you talk cr!p mate, so say if we did leave carrick to rot in the reserves for the next two years, while paying him £15k a week or whatever he is on, and then let him leave on a free! what great business sense that makes, or we rip off one of our rivals for 15mil for a player who hasnt really proved himself, yeah he’s good, but he’s not great!
Carrick didnt want to play for us anymore, so why pay him for not playing for the next two years, when we can flog him for over 10mil profit, and use that cash to improve our team even further, next time you say something think abit about it first.
As for who to sign, we need Bridge from chelsea and Petrov from A.Madrid, those two i guess would cost no more than 5mil apiece, so that still leaves us with 5mil left from the carrick sale to spend on another striker.

  12. wat bout denilson, the man is still a legend and will ghost by people and he’s a free, forget bridge not gud enuf if we want to progress, definately need another goalscorer so go all out for torres or klose

  13. well i believe carrick only used totenham to gain exposure because westham dropped down. in my opinion he has had one good season at spurs though did get caught in possession a bit too often and played alot of backwaRD balls when we should of been attacking. he wont get away at united , look out for his career inengland squad ending this season coming. im glad he has gone that means a chance for jenas to play in central rather than rw. murphy is a good passer huddlstone zokora i feel we need petrov for the left and ameiobi for striker

  14. July 29, 2006 jameselliot

Boys, please understand, Levy has done a PHENOMINAL deal selling Carrick. Yes the boy can pass but he cant head, cross a corner, play a feekick, tackle, go forward or score. £15m is unbelievable for THE most overrated player in teh premiership. COYS

  15. I agree with Jimmy on the fact that DaveK is chatting shit. Making a major profit of around 10 million is a good business deal for the club. Although we don’t need to sell, Carrick wants to move so we should let him. This leaves space for Jenas to play in central midfield with Zokora and gives Murphy the chance to prove himself.
We need to sign a left midfielder and a right or left back. I would like to see Sorin at left back and move Lee Young-Pyo to the right where he is better. I want Spurs to sign either Downing or Malouda who is a decent player.

  16. I don’t think we’ll be getting another left back, you’re all forgetting we’ve signed Benoit Assou-Ekketo from Lens, Commoli said he’s one to go right into the 1st team and was the best LB in France last year. Anyone seen him play? I think we’ll be getting a RB, a left winger and maybe a young 4th striker.

But the thing with the management setup at spurs now is that they wont panick buy. if we don’t fill one of these positions this summer don’t get het up, it just means the right player wasn’t available at the time. we’re building people and its brilliant.

  17. July 29, 2006 Chris NI

To hell with Chimbonda he’s getting too expensive and could well be a 1 season wonder. How about Andoni Iraola from Athletic Bilbao for right back and rescue Gareth Barry from Villa for left midfield. Barry is a boring choice but he’s dependable and proven.

  18. July 29, 2006 Yido4ever

chimbonda….1 good season worth 6mil. NO WAY. We need someone who is a top quality right back and has been for a few years silvestre/O’Shea maybe. I also think we should get downing he has the best cross in the prem. There is a formation where we dont need anyone and could just by to improove in positions not just get them because there half decent and we need a player in that position.
    Robbo
    Dervite/gardner/or a great centre back-king-dawson
Lennon-zokora-Jenas-oh yea i do need a left mid
    keano
    Defoe-berbatov

  19. Jimmy and Miles, matbe you are right…only time will tell, but for me Utd + Carrick = top4 finish, and as we are nowhere near as good as Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal at the moment that means we finish outside the top 4. That means we lose shedloads of money again. It’s about control of assets at the moment not about transfer fees and salaries. Utd were there for the taking but not now. Anyway, hope you are right and I’m wrong, but the fact that we are prepared to sell one of our best assets to a competitor probably means that we will do the same again with our other key assets if one of the “big” clubs wants to buy them.

  20. July 29, 2006 Nottingham Dan

Without bringing in a quality left back and right back we can wave goodbye to Champions League. Staltieri and the right-footed Pyo are not even premiership standard.

  21. Spurs should sign Maximiliano ‘Maxi’ Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid he had an amazing world cup he is a quality left sided midfielder and is only 25 come on jol get your check book out !!!

  22. i meant cheque book

  23. Selling Carrick was definately a good bit of business. Yes he is a potentially very good player but to play in his holding role you need some presence - compare him to Roy Keane and Viera. Every single move went through him last season and every time he completely slowed the move down - sometimes to great effect, but countering through him was impossible as he was scared to play a pass that may not go to the correct target. He was consistently good, but never amazing. 15 million is a good bit of business - and lets not forget we have Zokora, Davids, Jenas and Huddlestone in the centre now. I wouldn’t mind seeing Downing join us but not for 8 million - he has no pace!

  24. not a fan of downing. no great shakes. no pace no skill. agree wudnt like to see us splash out just cos we got cash our plan currently is correct. i wud like to see us pick up denilson who is highly skillful and on his day brilliant and i wud love to see bridge join him. denilson is on a free bridge would cost 5 million. the rest we will save for a rainy day shall we say?

  25. These are the players we need-

    Wayne Bridge
    Gareth Bale
    Giles Barnes
    Kieron Richardson
    Gareth Barry
    Izzie Mcleod

  26. Martin Petrov in new to me. How goods is he? I’ll like us to have one more striker though I think Barny should get the chance to prove is worth.

  27. I also think we should enqire about Emerson Boyce

  28. July 29, 2006 crazyspurs

Whats going on with zabina from juve, he can play RFB and CB, also wee a need that fourth striker who I don’t know - I thought carlton cole would be perfect. as for the Left hand side we need two, ben-arfa/downing and denilson/petrov would be my pick

  29. Carrick for 15 million was great business, he’s worth only about 8 million and besides wanted to go.

Agree with the authour that would be good to add some proven experience. I say at minimum sign Sorin (Argie captain!)and Chimbonda. Would sign Bridge if available too despite Ekotto, until Ekotto gains more prem experience.Could cut a deal on Kuyt as lack of interest in him at the moment. So IN:Sorin, Bridge, Chimbonda, Kuyt for 20 million. GET RID OF: Reid, Murphy, Lee and/or Stalteri for 7 or 8 million back in to the kitty. Feel those additions would add strength and experience to complete the squad. Even maybe add Graveson as defensive midfield cover for Zokora when goes to ANC if available for 2 million. No Downing please, well overated and overpriced.

  30. READ JAMES ELLIOT’S COMMENTS ABOVE AND TAKE IT IN.
Up to xmas, the spurs faithful were split 50/50 on Carrick. He went on to have a good end to the season but that was it. Carrick was/is well over-rated. We may have finished fifth last season but we struggled to dominate games due to all of Carrick’s inablilties.
It amazes me sometimes what some of our fans see.
Good riddance to Carrick and great business by the board.
    Just don’t panic buy.
Downing has not looked the same since his injury so lets not go there.
Lee Pyo will be awesome on the right. Trust me, he can’t kick with his left but his right boot is superb and his lighting quick. Ifil is sufficient back up. A real talent and the only good spark from Milwalls shit season. So DON’T pay £6mill for Chimonda!
We need a young tall/strong 4th striker, who doesn’t expect to be in the team every week. Happy to learn his trade from the trio we have but able on the other hand to offer something different.
Please buy Gareth Barry. He’s english, a leader, puts his boot in and delivers a fantastic cross and he’s a YID..McClaren is a huge fan. Don’t be surprised to see him back in the England squad.
F**k Bridge!! Chelsea are toying with the Spurs when it comes to transfers so I wouldn’t bother.
We have some quality central midfielders so no purchases needed here.
My only other concern is …Dawson.
I know a lot of people will disagree with me but whilst he may have some John Terry type qualities his many errors last season(2nd only to Stalteri)proved costly(and he seemed to find it funny-reminiscent of Ian Walkers reaction to f**king up).and to make it worse, we have just given Gardener a four year contract!! (What are we thinking!!!)
Give Calum Davenport a chance. This guys quality and there’s a lot of teams after him. Why can’t Jol see this?
Anyway,I think we are in for a great season, where we will see faster, more attacking football with us dominating a lot more possession , so expect to see the Yids scoring a lot more goals in games.
    It’s all good!!

    Let the good time roll!!

    M.

  31. u all talk rubbish and live in cuckoo land the only reason u finished fifth was that u played the least games in the premiership now u r fuked cos all the teams around u have strengthed and u r going to have play more games. good luck hope u enjoy europe cos aint goin there again for many years to come. all about the chelsea premiership and c.league in the bag. and dont say money did it as all the money u have spent over the years has amounted to one trophy the carling cup sorry make that two and the peace cup!!!!! hahahahaha

  32. think 15 mill for carrick was a good deal for us if the money comes back into the team!
we have a very good squad of young players we just need to fill in some key positions to climb into the top four
-Centre Back to provide cover/comp for dawson & king think davenport & gardner are not top prem players!!
-Midfield someone to complement lennon on the left wing
-Up Front maybe someone comein in the Jan transfer window
    possible players -
bridge as he is flexible LD/LW
    not sure about centre back!
    Up Front klose(like klinsmann!)

would like to comment on the remarks above chelsea fans think they are the bees knees just wait until all romans money drys up and you are left with 22 players on more than £50,000 pw still wanting to be paid!. down the pan i hope!think you need to look why these players are coming to your club MONEY MONEY MONEY (Drogba/Ballack/Crespo the list goes on)

  33. Chelsea you do talk crap! Has all that money gone to your head? How can spurs have played the least games in the prem last year when they all play 38 games? TWAT!!!

Anyway, agree with alot that’s been said previously.

Hope we hold on to Fulop as he seems a decent keeper & you never know when you might need back-up. Could keep him interested in staying by picking him for league cup games.

Dont think we need a left back. You’ve got to trust Jol & Comoli’s judgement & if they reckon Ekoutto (poss dodgy spelling)from Lens is the business, then fair enough.
Lee can be cover there & also Ziegler as he played left back for Wigan last year.
Lee for right back sounds a good option, although I fear with manure money in the bank that we will return with a bid for Chimbonda. If we do, just hope we dont overpay.
Ifill is also decent cover, which is presumably why we let Kelly go.
Hope Davenport gets a few games as he must have something about him. Looks like we’ll need cover cos Ledley’s forever getting injuries & Daws has picked up a sending off bug. Gardner gets a rough deal from fans. He never gets a run of games anymore so doesn’t bed in, but when he did play more regularly a couple of seasons ago he did ok. Anyway, he’s signed for 4 more years, so get used to seeing him around for a bit longer!
Glad to see we are not being held to ransom by clubs over transfers, unlike in the old days, so fair play to Levy.
Carrick deal is great business for us. If his head’s been turned & he dont want to play for us, then he can f**k off & getting 15 mill is a right result.
Dont rate Downing like so many others. Thought he was crap in the world cup, lacks pace & is not a consistently good crosser.Like the sound of Petrov though.
Think we’re well covered centrally & really hope Huddlestone gets some games cos he is the future & he can pass. He’ll also play to Defoe’s strengths, which I don’t think Carrick always did.
Finally, like a few others, I hope Barney gets a go as 4th striker, rather than pay out for someone to warm their arse on our bench, cos lets face it, they aint gonna be first choice with 11 mill Berbatov, Keano & Defoe all raring to go.
Either way, things look good so BRING IT ON!!!

  34. Definitely think it’s worth a big bet that we’ll finish above the arse this season.

  35. I don’t think we NEED to buy anybody!
A lot has been said about the number of midfielders we already have at the club - and now even though we have sold Carrick, (subject to some miraculous pull-out) this is STILL the case.
We now even have the impressive Ziegler and Routledge back to bolster our squad, ready for the bombardment of European games we hopefully have coming up.
Keep an eye out for Lee Barnard again too, he’ll have the odd opportunity to impress - more than he did last season I hope - but does look like he has a bit of a temper.

If I HAD to make a signing though, I would go for Gareth Barry without a doubt. People say we need cover on the left side - well he’s got a peach of a left foot, and can play virtually anywhere. Plus I hear he’s a Spurs Fan - ie far more likely to not jump ship at the first sign he’s bedding in and playing well!! Apparently Carrick is a Man U fan at heart, so no big surprise he left without even bothering to discuss Martin Jol’s offer of a new contract!

Verdict - Barry IN for about £5m (That sounds like what it will take to prise him away)

Then if ther’s no-one else that catches the eye, save the dosh for January when we might find another bargain!

    We’re definitely on the up… :)

  36. what we need is a bit of experience at the back as cover for dawson and king as there both young and will be exhausted by playin week after week i mean yea we have gardner but not rele a player hu stands out we need someone with experience at the highest level and ayala fits the bill perfect. and as for a LM and RB i belive the right back should be Pascal Chimbona as hes young talented and lot of potietal and i think its about time tottenham splashed the cash on a world class player for left mind i have in mind Julio Baptista hu is out of faver and also van der vartt or wesliy snjieder hu can all play left mid and are goalscoring midfielder hu work hard and not scared to get forward.

  37. Hoooger - I saw Benoit Assou-Ekketo play last week, in a friendly against Stevenage. He has great pace and did a few great runs up the wing. However he did drift out of position a little for my liking. Davids had to cover him on a number of occasions.

All in all he shows good potential and he’s only 18. He doesnt speak english yet so communication is a little bit of a problem.

All of you who are asking for a 4th striker be prepared to be let down. We will *NOT* sign another striker. Barnard is our 4th striker. Dawkins is set to take his place as top scorer in the reserves, he’s playing fantastic in pre season.

As for our left sided problem - Denilson, Petrov, downing. In that order. Denilsons wages would prolly break our 45k/week wage structure, so i’m not sure this will go through. Petrov has recently said he’s not moving. Signing Downing would worry me. IMO we would be to weak on the flanks, but we would have lightning pace.

I’ve watched a lot of pre season this year and playing the 3 up front is working very well. Berbatov is every bit the striker, and i think 10.9m will prove to be a bargin for us in the coming seasons.

    - L

  38. We should sell Murphy as he is just a waste of space. We should get Bridge for left back. Flip Lee on to the right. And then we should start trying to court Owen Hargreaves. He may have said that he wants Champ. league but if we could convince him we were definately on the up and perhaps offer him 5ok a week, which is what we were going to give Carrick, we would have a better holding midfielder than Carrick and quite probably for a lot less than 15m. Tianio can do well on the left so we should leave him there. Ziegler can deputize and Routledge can do the same for Lennon. Barnard can be our 4th striker. We should wait and see how the season develops and then address a left wing problem in january if one develops.

  39. July 31, 2006 Paxton Boy

DaveK needs to grasp that spurs are not a selling club, and have no intentions and no need to sell any of its players. But when a player turns around and says i want to play for another team, hes not worth keeping. I’m glad he was honest in his intentions and didn do a campbell. Like has been said already, £15m is a lot of cash for someone who wanted to leave anyway. Hes a great player and i believe he will be great for united, just disapointed he was unable to show more loyalty to pay back Jols faith.
As for future signings, only a left wing and right back are required. Benoit Assou-Ekotto was the most competent man on the pitch against Inter and i was extremely impressed. Chimbonda will hopefully be granted his move and we will have last years right back of the season along side ledders and daws. We have the 2nd deadliest strikeforce in the league now with berb, keane, and defoe, with some great youth talent like barnard as reserve. Assuming Chimbonda will eventually make his way to the lane, the left flank is the only missing piece to Jols master 5 year plan. Downing is not the answer, but i beleive Jol n Comoli know who or what is.
COYS, p.s. no one ever compare us to the scum ever again, we are a class above in everything we do, and are soon to prove it.
    Thank you

  40. once again, you guys are dreaming if you think you can get hargreaves or wayne bridge

  41. Some great comments chaps my feeling is we buy Both Barry and Sorin. Move Lee to right back because stalteri isnt good enough. Barny as 4th striker is enough so dont panic buy. Kuyt had his chance (Knob) but he was crap in the World Cup. My Team for next season:
    Robbo
    Sorin Dawson King Lee
    Barry Davids Zacora Lennon
    Berbatov Keane

  42. petrov!!!!!!!

  43. We really need to start signing the 2 or 3 players that we really need: the transfer window will only be open for another few days. What we don’t want to happen tho is to have another panic buy like last season (in the form of Radiak!!!)

We need to put our bid up for Chimbonda up to £5 million which he is worth and get a decent left winger. Downing wouldn’t be worth the money that Middlesboro would let him go for. Nolan would be an amazing buy if they can prise him away or even Petrov. If we dont get chimdonda, Lee Y.P. is an excellent man on the right which he showed for South Korea
he has good skill for tricks and is lighting fast on the wing.

If that did happen though, it would mean that we would have an amazing right wing but an absoulely shit left wing. If we get a decent left winger then the opposition’s defence would suffer big time as our attack would come in on both sides rather than just the right and we would break the best of defences down!!!

Just remember though that TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!!

  44. Tottenham should invest in Tevez and Mascherano before they are bought by Man U and Chelsea!
