Which Newcastle players would start for the top four sides?

Written by Ahmed Bilal. Tagged: Newcastle United

Okay, based on my Tottenham vs top 4 post, I thought I’d cover Newcastle in the same vein.

So far, I’ve come up with 6 players that would be worthy of a spot in the squads of the top four sides:

  • Michael Owen
  • Obafemi Martins
  • Kieron Dyer
  • Damien Duff
  • Shay Given
  • Scott Parker

Apart from Owen and Martins, I doubt anyone else would get a starting spot in Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal. In Arsenal, Martins would be lucky to make the bench, and in Chelsea, Duff would be in the same situation.

No defenders in that list - no surprise about that either. Think Newcastle will be bought soon? They’ve got the support, and more importantly, Newcastle have plenty of room to improve :)

  1. Well, seeing that Shay Given (notice the lack of an ‘S’) has been voted the best keeper in the Premiership I pretty sure he would walk into at least 3 of those four. Are you honestly trying to tell us that Pep Reina is better than Given? rubbish.
I think Emre should be on that list also providing he can stay injury free.

  2. Ahmed - I disagree:

    1. Shay Given would walk into any of the top 4 teams
    2. Now Dyer is fit again, I think he wold have a good chance
    3. James Milner might get in
    4. Nobby Solano has an outside chance

  3. I think Given would easily walk into Liverpool’s team and Arsenal have been sniffing around Nzogbia for ages now.

You would also have to discuss Emre and Taylor as potential squad players but Id grant you Taylor may be pushing it a little.

So for me Given, Martins and Owen would be starters. Duff, Parker, NZogbia and Dyer are all good enough for the odd start.

  4. Martins = 11 Prem goal v Bellamy = 7 Prem goals

    Duff or Zenden????

    Milner or Pennant?

Given or van der Saar? Or Reina or Lehman for that matter?

    Dyer or Kewell?

    Owen or Kuyt?

    Get real please.

Liverpool without Gerrard would have won what exactly? I seem to remember Liverpool being walloped 3-0 until Gerrard woke up.

Newcastle also have a fantastic bunch of youngsters emerging….

Only Chelsea, Man U and Arsenal boast all round better players than Toon.

Liverpool are no better than Spurs without Gerrard!

  5. How about Emre, Solano, Taylor, N’Zogbia, Milner…?

Last time I checked, Solano is second only to David Beckham for all time goal assists in Premiership history. Emre is a match winner when used effectively, N’Zogbia has the potential to be as good as any left winger in the world, and Stevie Taylor is destined to play for England. Opinion is divided on Milner but he’s been awesome this season.

By the way, who is Shay ‘Givens’ ?

  6. Lets face it … Duff struggles to get a game for us mags so talk of him getting a start for a top 4 club is way off the mark.
Even at 5m we paid too much … looked a good deal at time … but having seen him then it’s not … he has only got one foot and that is not that good, his other foot isn’t good enough to stand on … if spurs want to bid stupid money for him then I’d sell him … We have a better play about to return who should keep him out … step forward the Zog.
Given would get a start at any of these clubs
And what about Solano and Milner both flying at the minute both would be at ome in top squads … was doubtful of milner for a long time but he at last looks like coming good … be a better bet than SWP in England squad

  7. Sorry about the typo, it’s Given, not Givens :)

And no, i’m not a spurs fan :)

  8. Shay Given over Van Der Sar - not a chance! Scotty Parker might get the odd game or two at OT but I wouldn’t consider the others on that list for too long.

  9. given… 1st choice at all 4 (tho it would be very tight at chelsea). lets face it, we’re talkin about probably the best 2 keepers in the world here, but given gets more practice behind our back 4 so i’d personally go with him over anyone.
harper… on the bench at arsenal & liverpool, 3rd choice at chelsea (remember we’re talkin squads here) arguably 1st choice at man u (edwin van der saar?!??! roflmfao! do me a fuckin favour martino! he’s decent, but he’s never ever anytime ever been top class & he definitely shouldn’t be 1st choice at a club like man u). if harper had more games under his belt he’d be in the england squad.
taylor… he’d be 1st choice at almost any prem team but the top 4 & he’s only 21 so i’m pretty sure they’d be happy to have him in their squad. couple of years time, maybe 1st choice, but not just yet. maybe get in chelseas’ side ‘cos he’s already mastered the art of goin down like he’s been shot lol.
solano… beckham aside, the best outside right the prem has seen (tho ronaldo will eclipse them both if he stays).
on the bench for 3 now (1st choice at liverpool if gerrard plays in the middle), but a couple of years younger he’d be 1st choice at all but man u.
dyer… depends on which position you play him, 1st choice at some but bench for all 4 at the very least. players with his talent & pace are rare. has his faults but scares the pants off everyone. he could bring something to almost any team in the world.
    parker… bench at all 4
butt… on this seasons form ferguson must wish he was still at ot, but bench at all 4.
emre… bench at all 4 (inconsistent, can be brilliant or anonymous, cost us a few goals alredy this season with his fairy tackling).
duff… he’s a fanny, bags of skill but no idea how to play football. if the crowd got to pick the team he’d be dropped for n’zogbia (the minute the lad gets fit) but 3 would probably have him on the bench, 1st choice at liverpool.
n’zogbia… 1st choice at liverpool & maybe arsenal. bench at the other 2.
milner… 1st choice at liverpool, bench at the rest.
owen… 1st choice almost anywhere in the world, top 4 included.
martins… 1st choice at man u (for saha see comments on van der saar above) alongside rooney, 1st choice at liverpool (better than anyone they have) alongside kuyt, probably at chelsea too (mourinho likes him a lot) tho i personally dont think he’s as good as either drogba or shevchenko (he’s better than this, we all know it, but it’s so nice to laugh at £30m down the drain). on the bench at arsenal.

Sean - this is probably the most biased comment I have ever seen. Solano the 2nd best right midfielder to ever grace the premiership? Andrei Kanchelskis was a far more exciting and brilliant player, and that was 10 years ago…if I could be bothered to bestow further examples upon you, we could doubtless come up with some more. I’m not sure Taylor would be first choice at so many teams either…Portsmouth and Bolton, for example, have very settled and very tight centre backs. There’s no chance N’Zogbia would be first choice at Arsenal…they’ve already got a surplus of extremely talented midfielders, and N’Zogbia at the moment is nothing but unfulfilled potential (granted, he has a lot of it). And as for your remarks about Van der Saar…I’m just going to go ahead and assume that you have never seen the guy play. Thanks for the laugh though…preferring Harper over a keeper who has been performing at the top level for over 10 years, has near a hundred caps for Holland and dominates his box as well as any keeper in the world. And incidentally…you have put so many Newcastle players on the bench that looks like none of the other teams are going to get any of their players in there…sorry Walcott and co.!

  11. hugo,
solano was an awesome player a few years ago. granted he’s lost a little of his magic with age but is still an excellent player, one of the most intelligent footballers i’ve ever seen. when the teams line up & shake hands before kick-off take a look at how much respect he’s given by the opposing players as they shake hands, watch how many stop to have a quick word with him (altho he may be just popular ‘cos he is a really nice guy). his passing & crossing are as good as anyone in the game & he has tremendous vision.
fully agree that kanchelskis was exciting to watch but they are very very different in style. you never see solano taking anyone on, he more often than not passes his way around players with a quick 1-2 or a deft flick. kanchelskis was more kick & run using his pace with a lot more dribbling than solano.
records speak for themselves, more assists than anyone but beckham (& maybe robert for a season) year after year. can you really say the same about kanchelskis, or any other outside right for that matter. died a death when he went to rangers as i remember.
feel free to come up with more outside rights who aren’t as good as solano. you won’t find anyone inside st james or villa park who would have swapped him for anyone.
understand your comments on taylor but as i said earlier, how many 21 year old centre backs are as good as him? any squad would take a 21 year old with that much promise.
n’zogbia, i said MAYBE arsenal, but in truth i’m not sure who they’re playin on the left atm so that may have been a leap of faith. i do know that wenger has tried to sign him & been knocked back tho.
VDS i’ve seen play plenty & i really don’t think he’s top drawer. wasn’t 1st choice at juve, was & still is for holland but who’s the competition? ed de hoij (sp?) speaks for itself his international record then doesn’t it.
don’t misunderstand me, i don’t think harper is top drawer either, but he is good enough to get an england cap if he had regular football. given would certainly walk into man u’s team, so it was really more of a tongue in cheek dig at martino.
as for our team? if we can find a defence from somewhere we might well break into the top 4 next season. right now, with the injuries we have, we’re playin above ourselves & even with everyone fit, i couldn’t honestly see us in the top 4 with our back 4. top 6 tho for sure.

  12. Van der Sar over Harper is a tough one but i,d have to go with Harper.Van der Sar has never been a top drawer keeper,a steady keeper YES a top drawer keeper NO.Newcastle also have a young keeper called Tim Krul who is very highly rated who to be honest on what i,ve seen would challenge them both.
As for Solano well Hugo you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think Kanchelskis was a better player than Solano.Maradonna rated him the best outside right in the World and even Nicknamed him The Little Maestro, the things he can do with a football at times amazes me and his 1st touch is second to none as is his vision.Kanchelskis had pace which is always handy and he was a decent player but does Pace match Vision,Touch,Crossing,Passing not in my book SORRY. I like Sean from the Post above am hanging on tenterhooks waiting for these other outside rights who would get above Solano coz i cant think of any.
Gotta agree with you on N,Zogbia wouldnt get in any of the top four with the exeption of Liverpool but the lad has bags of potential so i think maybe subs bench for the other 3.

Martins would walk into Man U,Liverpool, tough call at chelsea and subs at Arsenal behind Henry and Van Persie but ahead of adabeyor. Owen would walk into all 4 without a doubt.
Taylor would be a welcome addition to any of the top 4 teams squads but a starting place i,m not too sure about he still has a lot to learn.Same applies to Milner.
Given in my opinion is the best keeper in the premiership and by quite a distance lets see petr czek(however u spell it)stand behind Newcastles back 4 and consistantly year after year perform to that standard.
Duff wouldnt get in my sunday league team ….Pansy

Scotty Parker, and Emre both could do a job for all 4 wether it would be from the start or from the subs bench i,m not too sure both can be brilliant or terrible on thier day
Dyer would get in Liverpools and Arsenals but depends where you played him coz he wouldnt shift Ronaldo or Robben in my opinion in thier respective positions but thats the good thing with dyer he can play left, right or up front and his pace frightens defenders.

Obviousley the Original Poster on this thread didnt think too much before he came up with the list probably picked the names out of the Paper

  13. Realistically:

Given - any team. He’s good and he’s proven it

Solano - He’s the best Peruvian there ever was. Maybe Arsenal, no other

Milner - Liverpool (but not Spanish so most likely not)
    - Chelsea (Simply cause he scored against Man Utd)

Martins - Arsenal. Henry, van Persie, Adebayor
    (make two pairs)

  14. Martins would be good for Manu

  15. Wiked would like to know who would keep solano out of the ManU and liverpool teams.

  16. Who would keep solano out of liverpool and ManU? ehh lets think, ronaldo, giggs. Obviously better players and although giggs is old so is solano so theres no contest. I’d rather have kewell than solano any day, and pennant is better, plus gerrard plays on the right so….thats who! Yes given would get into every team other than chelsea i tink, cech is amazing. Dyer would maybe get intro liverpool, and arsenal, instead of hleb/ljungberg. Milner just had a good season, ;ast year im sure most newcastle fans were happy to let him go to villa, still needs another year to prove himself. I actually quite like taylor but yeah, i would have him as a bench player for all of the top four. Harper ‘ is good enough to get an england cap if he had regular football.’ …. that is definitely nowhere near the truth, foster, robinson, james and im sure many other CHAMPIONSHIP gk’s r better than him. Perker’s not good enough for any of them, duff isn’t either, owen seems to be too old now, but we’ll see… so martins is the only one who would be regul;arly challenging for a first team spot at each club, and he would be in ahead of bellamy at liverpool. And finally i too think that n’zogbia is promising, but seems too inconsistent as yet, i’d still out him as an arsenal player, bench probably…not sure.

  17. this makes me laugh, except owen and given, they could all be very good squad players and nuthin else, nuthin

  18. they’d all make the bench if they were lucky
