Where will Sagna fit in at Arsenal?
RearGunner from ArseRant writes:
The news that I’ve been expecting for a while has arrived – we have indeed officially signed Bacary Sagna, a move that I’ve voiced my confusion over and one that intrigues me greatly for he is a right back, or at least, that’s the position in which he’s played predominately throughout his career, and we already have Eboue, Hoyte, and Kerrea Gilbert, newly returned from his loan spell at Cardiff.
I wasn’t certain of the former’s future actually, harvesting my own reservations about whether we should be in the market for a replacement. Eboue started the season well, performance wise, but his antics and behavior on the pitch was intolerable, his form then dipped also. All thoughts of getting rid were put to rest however when Eboue and Hoyte were both signed to long term deals. But here we are, having signed a new right back and having shelled out too good a deal for a player who will merely be a back up. Wenger had the following to say on his new purchase:
We are delighted to have signed Bacary Sagna. He is a very capable defender and has played consistently well for Auxerre in recent seasons. He plays mainly at right back, but can also play along the defence or in midfield. He is strong, quick and enjoys defending but also has a good offensive side to his game. He has a fighting spirit and will be a very good addition to our squad.
The suggestion that he can play along the defense or in midfield hints that Sagna’s role next season might not be limited to right back, which sounds about right. I’d guess that Sagna will also be used as cover for Clichy (Traore not yet being ready) and maybe additional midfield cover.
Where Eboue is concerned, I’m not sure he’ll be all too happy about playing second fiddle though I think that’ll be down to who excels more. Sagna I suppose is bought in to compete with Eboue for the right back slot while providing cover elsewhere. There’s also talk that Eboue could be moved up the wing, which could work though with Walcott and Hleb available, I can only think his appearances in such a role will be rather limited.
As I say, interesting and yet confusing stuff. I do wonder what Wenger will do with the two of them when the season kicks off. Meanwhile, Sagna himself had something to say and that was:
It is great to be joining Arsenal and I’m excited to be playing alongside many great players. I know Abou Diaby from our time together at Auxerre and also Gael Clichy and Mathieu Flamini from the French Under-21 team. Also Arsène Wenger is a major reason why I have signed for Arsenal. He is an excellent manager with a fantastic record and I am really looking forward to working with him. I’m also looking forward to playing at Emirates Stadium and winning trophies for the Club and all the supporters.
All good. It’s nice that he knows a few of the players already and seems to get on with Diaby rather well, from what I’ve heard, in particular.
With the arrival of Sagna though it makes me think that someone will have to make way. We have Hoyte and Gilbert too you see. The obvious one to go would be the latter. On loan to Cardiff next season, I didn’t see all too much of him, but what I heard was positive, some going as far to suggest that he’s a better option than Hoyte. Still, Hoyte improved a lot last season and was very recently given a new long term deal. Despite rumors of Reading and a couple of others sniffing around, perhaps preparing to test our resolve, he’s a decent player who can provide additional right back and left back cover. We might see him leave next season, I think, merely because he’ll want to seek first team football but for now, the obvious candidate for the departure lounge would surely be Gilbert, who’ll probably be farmed out on loan again with a view to the move being made a permanent one.
For now, I can only guess. Next season I suppose all will become clear. Welcome to the new lad though. Wish him all the success at the club I do.

Wenger is famous for making players play out of position and making them good, look at Toure and Henry. So with that it becomes even more vague as to where Sagna and Eboue will be playing next year.
July 17th, 2007 @ 16:16He seems like an okay signing but im not sure why Wenger is splashing the cash over under 21 players?
July 17th, 2007 @ 16:17Im confused he should go for a big signing..Huntalaar, Tevez or Owen woiuld be greta at the Emirates
Personally I see Eboue being moved up to challenge the right wing position. His balls into the box last season were fantastic, especially that last minute cross onto Henry’s head v united. Hleb for me is the biggest worry and if anything I dont see him providing the kind of game Ljungberg did game after game.
July 17th, 2007 @ 16:18Don’t forget, there’s African Cup of Nations this year, which means no Toure or Eboue for about 2 months…Baca will be vital at that time
July 17th, 2007 @ 16:41I reckon Sagna and Hoyte will fight for right back and if Clichy is injured Sagna will play there. I expect Eboue to be moved to the Right Wing to provide competition for Hleb.
July 17th, 2007 @ 16:43Wenger’s moves may seem confusing on the outset but there’s a reason for that oft used phrase we Gooners love so much – ‘Arsene Knows’.
Let me ask you guys one question. When has Arsene ever paid money for an established star?
Honestly, if there is someone i’ve forgotten about then let me know. If not then the question in itself is rhetorical.
July 17th, 2007 @ 17:02Wenger’s Hat – yeah, there’s the African nations to consider but at maximum the players will be out for six weeks and that’s only if their team goes all the way. I personally thought Hoyte would’ve been entrusted with the role of back up during that period with Gilbert as further cover if needed. I don’t think the African Nations alone justifies the signing of an £8M (or thereabouts) right back.
As others have hit upon, Wenger’s famous for making a player a success in another position and I think there’s something in that. I’ll be very interested to see where Eboue and Sagna end up playing this season and I think we might get a hint of that in the preseason friendlies.
July 17th, 2007 @ 17:19I think its either Clichy ot Eboue moving up to compete with Hleb. Both have been good and do tend to go deep into oppositon territory, clichy a bit less, but he has more pace and is better on a one on one situation. For sentimental reasons i hope he keeps Hoyte, otherwise the cries of “No Englishman in Gunners” will get even louder(and he’s has improved a lot).

July 17th, 2007 @ 19:43For all we know, Gallas could be on his way out and I sincerely hope he is with all his moans and complaints. He was out for the majority of last seson and it didnt look like we had such a big problem in defence. I say kick the *$@#er out. The last thing we need now is an unhealthy dressing room and he could be the root cause of it. Sagna may play cb with toure and gallas could be sold to some rich club. He can join Henry at Barca, as it is they share the same birthday(some info huh?) they might as well celebrate it together…………
July 17th, 2007 @ 20:59eboue at right wing? are you mad? wenger did that once due to injuries when th e game didn’t matter.
July 17th, 2007 @ 21:21“eboue at right wing? are you mad? wenger did that once due to injuries when th e game didn’t matter.”
arsene recently said/realised that the pitch of emirates is wide, so he’s decided to use it to advantage something they tried towards the close of last season. However with eboue’s deadly crosses he will be pushed further up the pitch to supply crosses for the strikers especially new arrival dudu.
Arsenal have been working very hard in training on their crosses & overall wingplay. With the wealth of creativty arsenal has in midfield expect strikers to score alot of goals this season.
A relatively unknown young left winger may be bought to replace the aging freddy & expect more attack to be developed from the wings this season
July 17th, 2007 @ 22:14Just a quick pointer – it’s not particularly important, but you might want to replace Gilberto with Gilbert in the last-but-third line. Unless you’re planning to sell Gilberto, which would make me (a Spurs fan) extremely happy. Unlikely, however. Oh well.
July 18th, 2007 @ 01:17yes yes, changed
July 18th, 2007 @ 02:19Arsenal still lack big game players.players who will drive the team forward when things arent goin well.cant figure out why wengers buyin a right back with eboue, hoyte already dere.
July 18th, 2007 @ 03:10What, another French buy?
July 18th, 2007 @ 12:15It seems like the French are preparing to really battle it out with the Spaniards for 3rd spot this season
Very well written and interesting article, interesting to see a gooner’s opinion on there current situation, i still think you need a left winger similar to Spur’s situation that will balance the midfield? Any thoughts?
July 18th, 2007 @ 21:07i think that all us arsenal supporters should have faith in wenger as he has never steared us wrong before! if he thinks that Sagna and Da Silva are good enough then i feel at ease!!! i mean who thought viera or henry could have turned out the way they did????? We will definatly get 4th next season!!!! and maybe even push for the title!!!!!
July 19th, 2007 @ 03:53just a side comment these days arsenal fans seem to hope for a TITLE PUSH or hope for a guaranteed 4TH SPOT it was only 3yrs ago we were INVINCIBLES, now we just aspire for champions league football.
July 19th, 2007 @ 19:36You hear comments like, “lets hope for a TITLE TILT/PUSH” Instead of hearing comments like “WE’LL WIN THE LEAGUE” comments like that is no longer in the vocabulary of arsenal fans lets all just hope this season would be different.
Ive got a very good feeling, infact a strong one that this season would be spectacular. with our defense having a new look & attack adding a few recruitments quite positive.(notice i didnt say we’ll win d league) how sad!
remember i said A.dimaria will play on wings in carling cup well u heard it first arsenal have signed him. apparently the best winger in argentina.. but work permit problems mean he may be loaned out
July 19th, 2007 @ 20:39Yes fab well said. Even i was disappointed with the fans after they lowered their expectations from our favourite club. Its a completely new lineup now and they do look hungry. Last year was supposed to be our return and we did play some spectacular games. Maybe the ‘return’ was a bit delayed. I’m quite sure we will perform next season. Go gunners……………
July 19th, 2007 @ 20:54PS. you can definitely expect some gunnerhater to respond with the same rant(spurs 4th, toons 5th, hammers6th etc etc) to this………………
